  • Light sources induced by gas discharge using rare gases have been widely used in the thin film deposition, the surface modification and the polymer etching. A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) has been developed in order to consistently emit light and control the wavelength of the emission light. However, much research on the characteristics of the movement of discharge particles is required to improve the efficiency of the light lamp and the life-time of the light apparatus in detail. In this paper, we developed a He DBD discharge simulation tool and investigated the characteristics of discharge particles which were electrons, two positive ions ($He^+$, $He_2^+$) and 5 excited particles ($He^*(1S)$, $He^*(3S)$, $He^*$, $He^{**}$, $He^{***}$). The discharge currents showed the transition from pulse mode to continuous mode with the increase of power. With the accumulated charges on the barrier walls, the discharge current was rapidly increased and caused oscillation of the discharge voltage. As the gas pressure increased, $He_2^+$ and $He^*(3S)$ became the dominant activated particles. The input power was mostly consumed by electrons and $He_2^+$ ion. And the change curve showed that power consumption by electrons increased more with gas pressure than with source voltage or frequency.

  • The spontaneous oscillations in the optogalvanic signals are observed in negative glow region of Ar hollow cathode discharge. The spontaneous oscillations in the optogalvanic signals are observed at low discharge currents less than about 3 mA. Based on the simultaneous measurements of both the density variation of metastable atoms and emission intensities of the 1s-2p transitions, one of the possible mechanisms for the spontaneous oscillation is considered to be related to the stepwise ionization of the metastable atoms due to collisions with slow electrons in the discharge.

  • The electrochemical spike oscillations at the nickel (Ni) electrode/(0.05M KHC$_{8}$H$_{4}$O$_{4}$) buffer solution (pH 9) interface have been studied using voltammetric and chronoamperometric methods. The nature of the periodic cathodic current spikes is the activation controlled currents due to the hydrogen evolution reaction and depends onthe fractioanl surface coverage of the adsorbed hydrogen intermediate or the cathodic potential. There is two kinds of the waveforms corresponding to two kinds of the cathodic current spike oscillations. The widths, periods, and amplitudes of the cathodic current spikes are 4 ms or 5ms, 151 ms or 302 ms, and < 30 mA or < 275 mA, respectively. The fast discharge and recombination reaction steps are 1.5 times and twice and faster than the slow discharge and recombination reaction steps. The fast and slow discharge and recombination reaction steps are 1.5 times and twice faster than the slow discharge and recombination reaction steps. • The optogalvanic signals were measured using hollow cathode discharge tube with argon as buffer gas at change of discharge currents. A change of ionization rate due to electron collision causes an increase or decrease of the electric conductivity, This change in electric conductivity generates the optogalvanic signal. We conclude that optogalvanic signal has close relation with change of the lowest metastable atoms density at low current.

  • The structure and properties of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) coatings depend on the main process parameters and bending angles of the magnetic field filter used in the filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA). During the process, it is possible to effectively control the plasma flux of carbon ions incident on the substrate by controlling the arc discharge current, thereby influencing the mechanical properties of the coating film. Furthermore, we can control the size and amount of large particles mixed during carbon film formation while conforming with the bending angle of the mechanical filter mounted on the FCVA; therefore, it also influences the mechanical properties. In this study, we consider tribological characteristics for filtered bending angles of 45° and 90° as a function of arc discharge currents of 60 and 100 A, respectively. Experiment results indicate that the frictional behavior of the ta-C coating film is independent of the bending angle of the filter. However, its sliding wear behavior significantly changes according to the bending angle of the FCVA filter, unlike the effect of the discharge current. Further, upon changing the bending angle from 45° to 90°, abrasive wear gets accelerated, thereby changing the size and mixing amount of macro particles inside the coating film.

  • This study proposes a newly modified form of existing ground electrodes in order to secure trust of grounding system for large current caused by a stroke of lightning. Proposed planar earth structure has a several needle electrodes around a circular rod and 4 plane electrodes in all directions. The plane electrodes are fused with the insulator on the linear rod, so that they're electrically isolated. The concept is to increase the discharge amount of earth structure using multiple discharge paths like needle and plane electrodes. To check the discharge efficiency of the suggested scheme, the discharge currents are compared with typically used two kinds of ground rods. To ensure accuracy in the measurement of the discharge current, the same material was used for the comparison model. Also, the ground resistance are simulated by CDEGS commercial software and the results are compared with measured data. Based on this kind of experimental study, the suggested ground rod can be used when designing a ground system or when constructing a ground system at the site.

  • The electrochemical impulse oscillations of the cathodic currents at the platinum group (Pt, Pd) electrode/(0.05M KHC$_{8}H_{4}O_{4}$) buffer solution interfaces have been studied using voltammetric, chronoamperometric, and electrochemical impedance methods. The periodic impulses of the cathodic currents are the activation controlled currents due to the hydrogen evolution reaction, and depend on the fractional surface coverage of the adsorbed hydrogen intermediate and potential. The oscillatory mechanism of the cathodic current impulses is connected with the unstable steady state of negative differential resistance. The widths and periods of the cathodic current impulses are 4ms or 5ms and 152.5ms or 305ms, respectively. The H$^{+}$ discharge reaction step is 38 or 61 times faster thatn the recombination reaction steps and the H$^{+}$ mass transport processes. The atom-atom recombination reaction step is twice faster thatn the atom-ion recombination reaction step. The two kinds of active sites corresponding to the atom-atom and atom-ion recombination reaction steps exist on the platinum group electrode surfaces.

  • This paper has purpose of designing the earthing system installed on the ground without laying under the ground. As a solution for green IT environment to solve the existing earthing system, the third generation earthing machine was designed by using discharge electrodes, catalyzer, and hot wires. As a result of comparison, it found that the third generation earthing system suggested in this research had more increased discharge currents by 31[A] and the speed 25 times faster than the second generation earthing system. The suggested earthing system is allowed to be installed on the ground and solve construction costs, time, area, and environment pollution, which are problems in the existing earthing system. In addition, as the earthing technique has recently developed, the earthing system is classified by generation based on capacity.

  • Surface corona discharge characteristics of a dc corona charged ferroelectric pellet barrier have been investigated experimentally. Electric charges stored on the surfaces of the ferroelectric pellets by a dc corona discharge provide partial electric fields on the surfaces of the ferroelectric pellets, which could generate surface corona discharges on the ferroelectric pellets. This system utilizes both the surface discharges on the ferroelectric pellet barrier and the corona discharge between corona tip and mesh electrode. Positive and negative dc voltages were applied to the tip to generate partial discharges, and corona currents were estimated to investigate the buildup charge on ferroelectric pellets as a function of the applied time and the charge relaxation time constants of ferroelectric pellets. As a result, in the case of the negative corona discharge with the ferroelectric pellet barrier, the mean corona current and ozone generation increase greatly, and the surface discharges on the ferroelectric pellets can be fenerated efficiently. It is also found that, charge relaxation time, dielectric constants offerroelectric pellets, polarity of applied voltage and applied time affected to the surface discharges among the ferroelectric pellets.
