  • In this paper, the second order time mean forces acting on the circular cylinder floating on the free surface of a finite water depth are calculated. Under the assumption that fluid is idea and the wave the linear gravity wave, the velocity potential is calculated by the source distribution method, and the second order time mean lateral and vertical drifting forces are calculated by the direct integration of fluid pressures over the immersed body surface. The comparison of the lateral drifting forces with Rhee's results by momentum theorem shows good agreements. And it is shown that the second order time sinkage forces of a floating circular cylinder cross zero for all water depths.

  • A series of direct shear tests were conducted to investigate the frictional properties of the interface between structures and the filling soil of Chongqing airport fourth stage expansion project. Two types of structures are investigated, one is low carbon steel and the other is the bedrock sampled from the site. The influence of soil water content, surface roughness and material types of structure were analyzed. The tests show that the interface friction and shear displacement curve has no softening stage and the curve shape is close to the Clough-Duncan hyperbola, while the soil is mainly shear contraction during testing. The interface frictional resistance and normal stress curve meets the Mohr-Coulomb criterion and the derived friction angle and frictional resistance of interface increase as surface roughness increases but is always lower than the internal friction angle and shear strength of soil respectively. When surface roughness is much larger than soil grain size, soil-structure interface is nearly shear surface in soil. In addition to the geometry of structural surface, the material types of structure also affects the performance of soil-structure interface. The wet interface frictional resistance will become lower than the natural one under specific conditions.

  • It is still controversial where the improved stability of n-octadecyltriethoxysilane self-assembled monolayer (OTE SAM) on plasma-pretreated mica surface exactly originates from. To date, it has been well known that the extensive cross-polymerization between silane headgroups is a crucial factor for the outstanding mechanical strength of the monolayer. However, this study directly observed that the stability comes not only from the cross-links but also, far more importantly, from the direct chemical bonds between silane headgroups and mica surface. To observe this phenomenon, n-octadecyltrichlorosilane monolayers were self-assembled on both untreated and plasma treated mica surfaces, and their adhesion properties at various stress conditions and force profiles in pure water were investigated and compared through the use of the surface forces apparatus technique. It revealed that, in pure water, there is a substantial difference of stability between untreated and plasma treated cases and the plasma treated surface is mechanically much more stable. In particular, the protrusion behavior of the monolayer during contact repetition experiment was always observed in the untreated case, but never in the plasma treated case. It directly demonstrates that the extensive chemical bonds indeed exist between silane head-groups and plasma treated mica surface and dramatically improve the mechanical stability of the OTE monolayer-coated mica substrate.

  • A grid-based hydrological model, CELTHYM, capable of estimating base flow and surface runoff using only readily available data, was used to assess hydrologic impacts caused by land use change on Little Eagle Creek (LEC) in Central Indiana. Using time periods when land use data are available, the model was calibrated with two years of observed stream flow data, 1983-1984, and verified by comparison of model predictions with observed stream flow data for 1972-1974 and 1990-1992. Stream flow data were separated into direct runoff and base flow using HYSEP (USGS) to estimate the impacts of urbanization on each hydrologic component. Analysis of the ratio between direct runoff and total runoff from simulation results, and the change in these ratios with land use change, shows that the ratio of direct runoff increases proportionally with increasing urban area. The ratio of direct runoff also varies with annual rainfall, with dry year ratios larger than those for wet years shows that urbanization might be more harmful during dry years than abundant rainfall years in terms of water yield and water quality management.

  • Icing causes various serious problems, where water vapor or water droplets adhere at cold conditions. Therefore, understanding of ice adhesion on solid surface and technology to reduce de-icing force are essential for surface finishing of metallic materials used in extreme environments and aircrafts. In this study, we controlled wettability of aluminum alloy using anodic oxidation, hydrophobic coating and lubricant-impregnation. In addition, surface porosity of anodized oxide layer was controlled to realize superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity. Then, de-icing force on these surfaces with a wide range of wettability and mobility of water was measured. The results show that the enhanced wettability of hydrophilic surface causes strong adhesion of ice. The hydrophobic coating on the nanoporous anodic oxide layer reduces the adhesion of ice, but the volume expansion of water during the freezing diminishes the effect. The lubricant-impregnated surface shows an extremely low adhesion of ice, since the lubricant inhibits the direct contact between ice and solid surface.

  • The complex coupling relationship between liquid sodium and concrete materials affects both the sodium fire characteristics and concrete properties through heat and chemical erosion. In this study, experiments on direct and indirect (separated by a steel plate) contact of the columnar sodium fire with the concrete surface were performed. It was found that the combustion efficiency of liquid sodium in direct contact with concrete was significantly enhanced and accompanied by intermittent explosions and splashing of small concrete fragments. The sodium fire on the surface of the concrete considerably increased the internal temperature, pore size, and distribution density of the concrete. In addition, the depth of influence on the loosening of the concrete structure was also greatly extended. The contact of liquid sodium with the concrete substantially affected its permeability resistance. The water absorption of the concrete surface was increased by more than 70% when liquid sodium directly impacted the bare concrete surface. However, the change in water absorption in the centre of the concrete was primarily affected by the duration of the external heat.

  • The static and dynamic hydrophobicities of the water droplets placed on a hydrophobic surface coated using a fluoroalkylsilanes monolayer with different molecular chain lengths were investigated through direct observation of the actual droplet motion during the sliding process. The surface roughness of both was found to be less than 1 nm. The static contact angles of the coated FAS-3 and FAS-17 were respectively $80^{\circ}$ and $108^{\circ}$ at $150^{\circ}C$, 1 h. The slope of sliding acceleration against the water droplet mass exhibited an inflection point, thus suggesting the switching of the dominant sliding mode from slipping to rolling. While their sliding angles were similar in value, notable differences were exhibited in terms of their sliding behavior. This can be understood as being due to the contribution of the shear stress difference at the interface between the solid surface and water during the sliding process. These results show that the sliding acceleration of the water droplets depends strongly on the balance between gravitational and retentive forces on the hydrophobic surface.

  • This study was conducted to suggest proper water management practices after and before broadcasting of rice seed on flooded paddy surface at reclaimed saline soil with two different saline levels in Gyehwado Substation of Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI) NICS, RDA for two years from 2004 to 2005. The stable seedling stand in low saline soil of 0.1% salinity was obtained by one time of water exchange after soil rotary Whereas in medium saline soilof 0.3% salinity, three times of water exchange was required for the stable seedling stand. Milled rice yield was not affected by frequency of water exchange in low saline soil, while it decreased sharply in one and two times of water exchange compared with three times of water exchange in medium saline soil. Irrigation water immediately after direct seeding increased the number of seeding stand in low saline soil. With the increase in the interval of water exchange after direct seeding, the milled rice yield decreased. Although the continuous water flowing showed the most number of seedling stand and was increased milled rice yield compared with the others interval of water exchange in medium saline soil, the number of seedling stand and milled rice wasn't significantly different up to exchange of two days interval compared with the continuous water flowing.
