  • Jet vane is an useful component which is installed at the end of a nozzle for the purpose of the posture control and the secure controlling stability during the initial launching of a rocket. During several seconds from its initial launching moment, the JV driving part is heated due to the direct contact of the vane with the combusted gas and the vane is ablated mechanically or chemically. In this study, as the fundamental study for the thermal analysis of jet vane, the heat transfer into a jet vane which is located in the uniform supersonic flow field is calculated. For this, boundary layer integral method and finite difference method are used simultaneously. Based on the thermal boundary conditions derived from the analysis, the transient heat conduction in the vane is also calculated.

  • A new instantaneous torque control is presented for a high performance control of a permanent magnet(PM) synchronous motor. In order to deal with the torque pulsating problem of a PM synchronous motor in a low speed region, new torque estimation and cotrol techniques are proposed. The linkage flux of a PM synchronous motor is estimated using a model reference adaptive system technique and the torque is instantaneously controlled by the proposed torque controller combining an integral variable structure control with a space vector PWM. The proposed control provides the advantage of reducing the torque pulsation caused by the non-sinusoidal flux distribution. This control strategy is applied to the high torque PM synchronous motor drive system for direct drive applications and implemented by using a software of the DSP TMS320C30. The simulations and experiments are carried out for this system and the results well demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed control.

  • The manufacturing sector resorts to automation to increase production and homogeneity of products during mass production, without increasing scarce, expensive, and unreliable manpower. Automation in the form of multiple robotic arms that handle materials in all directions in different stages of the process is proven to be the best way to increase production. This paper thoroughly investigates robotic single-arm movements, that is, 360° vertical rotation, with the help of a brushless DC motor, controlled by a fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. This paper also deals with the design and performance of the fuzzy-based PID controller used to control vertical movement against the limited scope of conventional PID feedback controller and how the torque of the arm is affected by the fuzzy PID controller in the four quadrants to ensure constant speed and accident-free operation despite the influence of gravitational force. The design was simulated through MATLAB/SIMULINK and integrated with dSPACE DS1104-based hardware to verify the dynamic behaviors of the arm.

  • Self-pressurization analysis of the natural circulation integral nuclear reactor through a new dynamic model is studied. Unlike conventional pressurized water reactors, this reactor type controls the system pressure using saturated coolant water in the steam dome at the top of the pressure vessel. Self-pressurization model is developed based on conservation of mass, volume, and energy by predicting the condensation that occurs in the steam dome and the flashing inside the chimney using the partial differential equation. A simple but functional model is adopted for the steam generator. The obtained results indicate that the variable measurement is consistent with design data and that this new model is able to predict the dynamics of the reactor in different situations. It is revealed that flashing and condensation power are in direct relation with the stability of the system pressure, without which pressure convergence cannot be established.

  • A mathematical model for the hydrodynamic forces acting on the ship manoeuvring in waves is formulated and a numerical method for the problem is developed. The motion of a ship, which manoeuvres in waves, may be thought to have two components; one is a high frequency component due to encounter waves, and the other is a low frequency component due to manoeuvring motion. So the method of two time scale expansion is used to divide linear boundary value problem. For the effects of waves on the manoeuvring motion of a ship, only the second order drift forces are considered. The integral equation for the velocity potential is solved by 3 dimensional panel method and hydrodynamic forces are calculated by direct integral method.

Empirical numerical model of tornadic flow fields and load effects

  • Tornadoes are the most devastating meteorological natural hazards. Many empirical and theoretical numerical models of tornado vortex have been proposed, because it is difficult to carry out direct measurements of tornado velocity components. However, most of existing numerical models fail to explain the physical structure of tornado vortices. The present paper proposes a new empirical numerical model for a tornado vortex, and its load effects on a low-rise and a tall building are calculated and compared with those for existing numerical models. The velocity components of the proposed model show clear variations with radius and height, showing good agreement with the results of field measurements, wind tunnel experiments and computational fluid dynamics. Normal stresses in the columns of a low-rise building obtained from the proposed model show intermediate values when compared with those obtained from existing numerical models. Local forces on a tall building show clear variation with height and the largest local forces show similar values to most existing numerical models. Local forces increase with increasing turbulence intensity and are found to depend mainly on reference velocity Uref and moving velocity Umov. However, they collapse to one curve for the same normalized velocity Uref / Umov. The effects of reference radius and reference height are found to be small. Resultant fluctuating force of generalized forces obtained from the modified Rankine model is considered to be larger than those obtained from the proposed model. Fluctuating force increases as the integral length scale increases for the modified Rankine model, while they remain almost constant regardless of the integral length scale for the proposed model.

  • In the numerical analysis of incompressible unsteady Navier-stokes equation, large time is required for solving the pressure Poisson equation of the elliptic type at each time step. In this paper, a numerical analysis by the direct method is carried out to solve the pressure Poisson equation and the computing time is analyzed as mesh size increases. The pressure Poisson equation can be transformed to the boundary value problem by the Green theorem. The computing time for the convolution type of the domain integral can be reduced by using F.F.T. and the computing time in the direct method depends entirely on obtaining the solution of the boundary value problem. The numerical analysis on the known solutions is carried out and compared for the verification of the direct method. And the numerical analysis on the body boundary and domain decomposition problem are carried out with the computing time less than O($n^{3}$) in the (n.n) mesh.

  • This paper describes sensorless speed control of brushless DC motors by using direct torque control. Direct torque control offers fast torque response, robust specification of parameter changes, and lower hardware and processing costs compared to vector-controlled drives. In this paper, the current error compensation method is applied to the sensorless speed control of a brushless DC motor. Through this control technique, the controlled stator voltage is applied to the brushless DC motor such that the error between the stator currents in the mathematical model and the actual motor can be forced to decay to zero as time proceeds, and therefore, the motor speed approaches the setting value. This paper discusses the composition of the controller, which can carry out robust speed control without any proportional-integral (PI) controllers. The simulation results show that the control system has good dynamic speed and load responses at wide ranges of speed.

  • The first-ever integral effect test for simulating a guillotine break of a DVI (Direct Vessel Injection) line of the APR1400 was carried out with the ATLAS (Advanced Thermal-hydraulic Test Loop for Accident Simulation) from the same prototypic pressure and temperature conditions as those of the APR1400. The major thermal hydraulic behaviors during a DVI line break accident were identified and investigated experimentally. A method for estimating the break flow based on a balance between the change in RCS inventory and the injection flow is proposed to overcome a direct break low measurement deficiency. A post-test calculation was performed with a best-estimate safety analysis code MARS 3.1 to examine its prediction capability and to identify any code deficiencies for the thermal hydraulic phenomena occurring during the DVI line break accidents. On the whole, the prediction of the MARS code shows a good agreement with the measured data. However, the code predicted a higher core level than did the data just before a loop seal clearing occurs, leading to no increase in the peak cladding temperature. The code also produced a more rapid decrease in the downcomer water level than was predicted by the data. These observable disagreements are thought to be caused by uncertainties in predicting countercurrent flow or condensation phenomena in a downcomer region. The present integral effect test data will be used to support the present conservative safety analysis methodology and to develop a new best-estimate safety analysis methodology for DVI line break accidents of the APR1400.

Nonlinear control of a double-effect evaporator by riemannian geometric approach

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the details of design procedure of a nonlinear regulator by Riemannian geometric approach and to applied it to the case of a double-effect evaporator. A nonlinear geometric model is proposed on a direct sum space of a state vector and a control vector as well as in the previous parers by the authors. The geometric model is derived by replacing the orthogonal straight coordinate axes of a linear system on the direct sum space with the curvilinear coordinate axes. The integral manifold of the geometric model becomes homeomorphic to that of fictitious linear system. For the geometric model a nonlinear regulator with a performance index is designed renewedly by the procedure of optimization. The construction method of the curvilinear coordinate axes on which the nonlinear system behaves as a linear system is discussed. To apply the above regulator theory to double-effect evaporators especially to the pilot plant at the University of Alberta, a suitable nonlinear model is determined by the plant dynamics. The optimal control law is derived through the calculation of the homeomorphism. As a result it is confirmed that the regulator is effective and superior to that of the conventional control.
