The usage of efficient microorganism (EM) is increasing in concern for server purposes including odor removal during carcasses degradation. In this study, we have studied the type of soil and its effect on efficient microorganisms for the removal of odorous gases during buried carcasses degradation in lab-scale reactor. The carcasses are buried in the reactor with various soil types such as normal soil, 20% sandy and 20% clay soil with the efficient microorganism KEM. The efficient microorganisms KEM have the ability to stabilize the degradation of carcasses of the burial site. We have focused on the analysis of odorous gases such tri-methylamine (TMA), hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), methyl mercaptan (MM), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), and methane ($CH_4$) along with the changes of microbial community changed during complete degradation of buried carcasses for a year. The results suggested that the 20% sandy soil contain lesser level of $H_2S$ and MM (0.09 and 0.35 mg) but 20% clay has higher nitrogen compound removing effect and leave only less amount of ammonia and TMA (0.31 and 2.06 mg). The 20% sandy soil also has the ability to breakdown the carcasses more quality compared with other types of soil. Based on the data obtained in this study suggesting that, the use of 20% sandy soil can effectively control sulfur compounds whereas 20% clay soil controls nitrogen compounds in the buried soil. Depending on the type of the soil, the dominant of microbial communities and the distribution was change.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effect of Korean medical treatments such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, and electroacupuncture by using the portable gas chromatograph OralChroma$^{TM}$ (Abimedical, Japan) in halitosis patients. Methods: We surveyed 30 halitosis patients who had visited the Oral Diseases Clinic in the Korean Medical Hospital of Kyunghee University from October, 2013 to November, 2014. Before starting Korean medical treatment, the subjects were evaluated on sociodemographic characteristics, severity of discomfort using visual analogue scale (VAS), unstimulated salivary flow rate (USFR), and halitosis associated life-quality test (HALT) score. To evaluate the therapeutic effect, we measured the volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in breath by using OralChroma$^{TM}$ before and after 3 weeks treatment. Results: The concentration of total VSCs measured by OralChroma$^{TM}$ significantly decreased (p=0.001). Furthermore, the level of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan also significantly decreased (p<0.05). However, although the level of dimethyl sulfide decreased as well, there was no significance(p>0.05). Conclusions: Korean medical treatment was effective in treating halitosis by decreasing VSCs. Further study, with well-designed randomized controlled trials with larger number of cases will be needed in the future.
The extraction rates of plasticizer of LPG high pressure rubber are studied. Submerging solvents are composed of propane, n-butane, n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, propylene, 1,3-butadiene, 1-pentene, 1-hexene, ethanethiol, t-butanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, methyl ethyl sulfide. The relationship between the extraction rate of plasticizer and the descriptors of submerging solvent by using multiple linear regression is as follows; PE(wt%) = 7.5193 - 0.58500Carbon${\sharp}$ + 2.3294DB + 2364SH, (N = 13, F = 24.135, R$^2$ = 0.8894, R$_{adj}^2$ = 0.8526, Variance = 7.588) Plasticizer is well extracted by LPG composed of the high vapour pressure and polarity compounds. The mass of extracted plasticizer becomes increasing in proportion to the contents of thiol sulfur compound and unsaturated hydrocarbon such as propylene and 1,3-butadiene in LPG. While the heavier hydrocarbons are, the less the quantities of plasticizer extracted from rubber are.
Gas chromatography using sulfur chemiluminescence detection (GC-SCD) which exhibits very good selectivity, linearity, and sensitivity was applied to the analysis of suIfur compounds in gaseous fuel. The expectmental method used in this study was to resolve the problems of repeatability and reproducibility by means of the adsorption of sulfur compounds, which is different from the existing analysis method of these compounds by GC-SCD. The calibration curves of the standard gases including dimethyl sulfide, t-butylmercaptan and ethyl methyl sulfide exhibited an excellent linearity. As the result of precision tests for the above three compounds, the high reproducibility for tests showed while repeating three times during four days, respectively. In addition, the coefficient of variation was less than 3%. In consequence, the expectmental method of this study is very effective not only with low uncertainty but also with better accuracy, which can quickly determine the concentration of gas odorants in LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) from oil reservoirs and filling stations.

Odor emission from domestic sewer systems has become a serious environmental problem. An investigation on a sewer manhole revealed that anaerobic decay of sediment organic matters (SOMs) and related declines of oxidation reduction potential (ORP) in the sediment layer were the main reason of the production of volatile sulfur compounds. In addition, as the anaerobic decaying period continued, the odor intensity rapidly increased with increasing concentrations of $H_2S$ and dimethyl sulfide. As a feasible method to control SOMs and to minimize odor emission potentials, an electrolytic oxidation process has been employed to the sediment sludge phase. In this study, voltages applied to the electrolytic oxidation process were varied as a main system parameter, and its effects on odor removal efficiencies and reaction characteristics were investigated. At the applied voltages greater than 20 V, the system efficiently oxidized the organic matter, and the ORP in the sludge phase increased rapidly. As a consequence, the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide was found to be >99% within 60 minutes of the electrolytic oxidation. Overall, the electrolytic oxidation process can be an alternative to control odor emission from sewer systems, and a threshold input energy needs to be determined to achieve effective operation of the process.

The precursor substance and volatile components of cooked flavor of squid meat were studied. Volatile components were trapped by simultaneous distillation-extraction method, and these were fractionated into the neutral, basic, phenolic and acidic fraction. Volatile flavor components in these frations were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. 80% methanol solution was the most effective solvent for extraction of the precursor substance for cooked flavor. The neutral and basic fraction, by organoleptic test, seem to have a major effect on squid-like flavor. Forty-four compounds, including 2 hydorcarbons, 10 alcohols, 5 aldehydes, 1 ketone, 1 furan, 3 sulfide compounds, 7 pyrazines, 2 pyridines, 1 amino, 2 phenols and 10 acids, identified as cooked flavor compounds of squid meat.

Halitosis is primarily caused by oral conditions. In particular, volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are mainly responsible for intra-oral halitosis. They are closely associated with the water temperature. In this study, we investigated the association between halitosis and water temperature for oral rinse (10℃, 30℃, and 45℃) using the BB checker and oral chroma. The application of BB checker on an empty stomach revealed that halitosis decreased with the use of tongue cleaners (p=0.001) and toothpastes (p=0.002). Furthermore, halitosis decreased after drinking milk (VSCs-induced food intake) (p=0.000). There were no significant differences in the results of oral chroma. Finally, we measured halitosis on an empty stomach and after drinking milk. The BB checker showed increased halitosis after drinking milk (p<0.001). The oral chroma showed decreased hydrogen sulfide (p<0.001) and increased methyl mercaptan (p=0.009) and dimethyl sulfide (p=0.002) after drinking milk. In conclusion, halitosis cannot be modulated using water temperature for oral rinse. The findings of this study cannot be generalized because of the small sample size and the limits of age and sex. Further studies are required to extensively analyze both sexes and various age groups, with more number of subjects.
Biofiltration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was performed for 80 days in a biofilter packed with peat. The empty bed residence time was 3.2 min. for a gas mixture of isoprene, dimethyl sulfide, chloroform. benzene, trichlorethylene, toluene, m0xylene, o-xylene and styrene. After 34 days of acclimatization the removal efficiency for a 83 g/㎥ gas input was 93% at $25^{circ}C$ and 73% at $45^{circ}C$, respectively. The maximum cell density at $25^{circ}C$ was 1.12$\times$10(sup)8 cells/g. Removal efficiencies of m-xylene and toluene (91%) were better than that of benzene (86%). The first quarter of the packed column removed 60% of the incoming VOCs.

We investigated the electrochemical properties of lithium/molybdenum sulfide(Li/MoS$_2$) using tetra (ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether(TEGDME) electrolyte. The Li/TEGDME/MoS$_2$ cell showed the first discharge capacity of 288mAhg$^{-1}$. From the XRD, SEM results of the MOS$_2$ electrode in various cut-off voltage during charge-discharge process, MoS$_2$ partly changed into Li$_2$S and Mo during discharge and Li$_2$S partly recovered into MOS$_2$ and Li during charge. Full charged MOS$_2$ electrode showed lump shape of big size, which might be related to agglomerate of MoS$_2$ particles. Therefore, the degradation might be related to decrease of active material for electrochemical reaction by agglomeration of MOS$_2$.
Crab-like flavorants (CFs) were made from snow crab cooker effluent (SCCE) using response surface methodology (RSM) and reaction flavoring technology (RFT). Type A CF was made from SCCE via RSM, RFT, adding starch syrup, centrifugation, and microfiltration. Type B was made from type A by adding the food additives dimethyl sulfide, ethyl valerate and fish sauce. The stability of the CFs was evaluated in terms of the color values, sensory evaluation, and flavor profiles after storage for 90 days at three different temperatures: 10, 20, and $30^{\circ}C$. The compounds, ethanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol, were considered key components of off-flavor and a decrease in dimethyl-2-vinylpyrazine affected the occurrence of off-flavor. It may be a microbial metabolite arising from contamination and lab-scale micro-filtration. At the lowest temperature ($10^{\circ}C$), the decrease in volatile compounds, such as pyrazines, was not as dramatic as at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ and alcohol formation was prevented or delayed. Therefore, it is necessary to store CFs at < $10^{\circ}C$ with suitable sterilization to preserve volatile flavor compounds and prevent off-flavor from occurring.
