  • In two-dimensional incompressible flows, a preconditioning technique called Hierarchical Iterative Procedure (HIP) has been implemented on a SUPG finite element formulation. By using the SUPG formulation, one can escape from the LBB constraint hence, achieving an equal order formulation. In this paper, we increased the order of interpolation up to cubic. The conjugate gradient squared (CGS) method is used for the outer iteration, and the HIP for the preconditioning for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. The hierarchical elements have been used to achieve a higher order accuracy in fluid flow analyses, but a proper and efficient iterative procedure for higher order finite element formulation has not been available, thus far. The numerical results by the present HIP for the lid driven cavity flow showed the present procedure to be stable, very efficient, and useful in flow analyses, in conjunction with hierarchical elements.

  • Geocell is a three dimensional cellular confinement system that forms a reocomposite mattress with infill material to increase the bearing capacity dramatically rather than geotextiles of nonwoven and woven fabric type and geogrid. In terms of design, this geocell confinement is quite complex to assess and is different in its hieoretical evaluation and its concept from other geosynthetic products. Thsi study is aimed to help a basic understanding on Geoweb system, which is known to be the most effective and easiest in handling among the geocell systems ever developed, by introducing two method of interpretation for the improvement of bearing capacity. Thus the writers are sillingly to help the geotechnical engineers and the site engineers who might be encountered with the bearing capacity problems on site.

  • This paper proposes a decentralized control technique for 2-dimensional experimental helicopter systems. The decentralized control technique is especially suitable in large-scale control systems. We derive the stabilization condition for the interconnected Takagi-Sugeno (75) fuzzy system using the rigorous tool - Lyapunov stability criterion and formulate the controller design condition in terms of linear matrix inequality (LMI). To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, we include the experiment result as well as a computer simulation one, which strongly convinces us the applicability to the industry.

  • This paper considers a robust adaptive stabilization problem for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems which include an unknown virtual control coefficient, an unknown constant parameter, and a time-varying disturbance whose bound is unknown, We propose a new estimator for an un-known virtual control coefficient and present a robust adaptive backstepping design procedure which results in a smooth state feedback control law, a new two-dimensional parameter update law, and a $C^1$ Lyapunov function which is positive definite and proper.

  • When a flame is stabilized in a tube of a finite thickness, a conductive heat transfer through the tube significantly changes the wall temperature and affects the flame characteristics. Thus the tube length and thermal boundary conditions affect on the structure of the flame in a conductive tube. A one-dimensional analytical study was conducted by employing two energy equations for tubes and mixtures and a species equation for the mixture. Variation of the maximum temperatures and indicating displacements were observed. A parametric study on the effects of inner Peclet numbers, normalized wall conductivities, and heat transfer conditions of the tube was conducted. This study provides essential data for a more efficient computational simulation of the flame stabilized in conductive tubes.

  • Peptidyl prolyl cis/trans isomerases (PPIases) catalyze the cis/trans isomerization of peptidyl-prolyl peptide bonds preceding prolines. We investigated the protein-protein interaction between a 22 kDa PPIase (VaFKBP22, an FK506-binding protein) and the molecular chaperone DnaK derived from Vibrio anguillarum O1 (VaDnaK) using GST pull-down assays and a bacterial two-hybrid system for in vivo and in vitro studies, respectively. Furthermore, we analyzed the three-dimensional structure of the protein-protein interaction. Based on our results, VaFKBP22 appears to act as a cochaperone of VaDnaK, and contributes to protein folding and stabilization via its peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerization activity.

  • Measurement of welding residual stresses is one of important tasks to assess the structural integrity of welded structures. For operating components, especially, nondestructive techniques are required. By now, authors have proposed a new residual stress evaluation method, the bead flush method, where residual stresses are calculated from eigenstrain distribution determined by surface removal of reinforcement. In this paper, a brief description of the bead flush method is given and its utility and problem to be overcome are discussed. And also stabilization method of solution set of eigenstrain in inverse analysis is proposed.

  • Nowadays the amount of plastic products is increasing in modern industry. Plastic materials are continuously developed to satisfy the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. The increasing application of plastic parts in automobile and aerospace industries is due to the fact that it can reduce the structural weight and can lessen the environmental contamination. Among many manufacturing technologies for plastic parts, the injection molding process is very attractive because of its low cost and short production time. Through various analyses of resin flow and molding process for the conventional gate and cooling mechanism, a new type of mold was designed which had different gate location and cooling systems. Newly designed ball seat has an excellent performances, i.e. diminished weld-line, residual stress density, higher magnitude less crack propagation and smaller dimensional contractions effect.

  • Nowadays many articles describe the controlling models for four rotor flying vehicle. Basic approaches to the problem of these articles are mathematical expressions describing dynamics of the models of the vehicle and PID control for manipulating the object in 3 dimensional space. Design of control systems is usually started by careful consideration of its mathematical model description. We present a detailed mathematical model for a quad rotor. This paper first considers simulation of quadcopter control based on full state feedback technique with linearization in MATLAB environment and shows the results of the simulations. Finally will be shown experimental results of the state feedback control implemented in real model.

  • A two-dimensional flutter analysis method (2d-3DOF method) was developed to simultaneously investigate the relationship between oscillation parameters and aerodynamic derivatives of three degrees of freedom, and to clarify the coupling effects of different degrees of freedom in flutter instability. With this method, the flutter mechanism of two typical bridge deck sections, box girder section and two-isolated-girder section, were numerically investigated, and both differences and common ground in these two typical flutter phenomena are summarized. Then the flutter stabilization effect and its mechanism for long-span bridges with box girders by using central-slotting were studied by experimental investigation of aerodynamic stability and theoretical analysis of stabilizing mechanism. Possible explanation of new findings in the evaluation trend of critical wind speed through central vent width is finally presented.
