The bond mechanism for reinforcing bars in concrete is equivalent to the normal contact and friction between the inclined ribs and the surrounding concrete. Based on the contact density model for the computation of shear transfer across cracks, an open-slip coupled model was developed for simulating three-dimensional bond behavior for reinforcing bars in concrete. A parameter study was performed and verified by simulating pull-out experiments of extremely different boundary conditions: short bar embedment with a huge concrete cover, extremely long bar embedment with a huge concrete cover, embedded aluminum bar and short bar embedded length with an insufficient concrete cover. The bar strain effect and splitting of the concrete cover on a local bond can be explained by finite element (FE) analysis. The analysis shows that the strain effect results from a large local slip and the splitting effect of a large opening of the interface. Finally, the sensitivity of rebar geometry was also checked by FE analysis and implies that the open-slip coupled model can be extended to the case of plain bar.

Splitting algorithms of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using P1P1/P2P1 finite element formulation are newly proposed. P1P1 formulation allocates velocity and pressure at the same nodes, while P2P1 formulation allocates pressure only at the vertex nodes and velocity at both the vertex and mid nodes. For comparison of the elapsed time and accuracy of the two methods, they have been applied to the well-known benchmark problems. The three cases chosen are the two-dimensional steady and unsteady flows around a fixed cylinder, decaying vortex, and impinging slot jet. It is shown that the proposed P2P1 semi-splitting method performs better than the conventional P1P1 splitting method in terms of both accuracy and computation time.

A general-purpose program for automatic two-dimensional finite-element modelling with quadrilateral elements was developed in this research. The conventional looping method employed in the program was introduced with emphasis on a new splitting criterion and a splitting scheme developed for improving the method. Some application examples were given, which show versatility and applicability of the developed program.

This paper presents the numerical valuation of the arithmetic Asian option by using the operator-splitting method (OSM). Since there is no closed-form solution for the arithmetic Asian option, finding a good numerical algorithm to value the arithmetic Asian option is important. In this paper, we focus on a two-dimensional PDE. The OSM is famous for dealing with plural-dimensional PDE using finite difference discretization. We provide a detailed numerical algorithm and compare results with MCS method to show the performance of the method.
In this paper, we study numerical schemes for solving multi-dimensional option pricing problem. We compare the direct solving method and the Operator Splitting Method(OSM) by using finite difference approximations. By varying parameters of the Black-Scholes equations for the maximum on the call option problem, we observed that there is no significant difference between the two methods on the convergence criterion except a huge difference in computation cost. Therefore, the two methods are compatible in practice and one can improve the time efficiency by combining the OSM with parallel computation technique. We show numerical examples including the Equity-Linked Security(ELS) pricing based on either two assets or three assets by using the OSM with the Monte-Carlo Simulation as the benchmark.
Various Eulerian-Lagrangian models for the one-dimensional longitudinal dispersion equation in nonuniform flow were studied comparatively. In the models studied, the transport equation was decoupled into two component parts by the operator-splitting approach; one part is governing advection and the other is governing dispersion. The advection equation has been solved by using the method of characteristics following fluid particles along the characteristic line and the results were interpolated onto an Eulerian grid on which the dispersion equation was solved by Crank-Nicholson type finite difference method. In the solution of the advection equation, Lagrange fifth, cubic spline, Hermite third and fifth interpolating polynomials were tested by numerical experiment and theoretical error analysis. Among these, Hermite interpolating polynomials are generally superior to Lagrange and cubic spline interpolating polynomials in reducing both dissipation and dispersion errors.
Contaminant transport in groundwater induces major threat and harmful effect on the environment; hence, the fate of the contaminant migration in groundwater is seeking a lot of attention. In this paper a two dimensional numerical flow and transport model through saturated layered soil is developed. Groundwater flow and solute transport has been simulated numerically using proposed model. The model implements the finite volume time splitting method to discretize the main equations. The performance, accuracy and efficiency of the out coming numerical models have been successfully examined by two test cases. The verification test cases consist of two-dimensional, groundwater flow and solute transport. The final purpose of this paper is to discuss and compare the shape of contaminant plume in homogeneous and heterogeneous media with different soil properties and control of solute transport using a zone for minimizing the potential of groundwater contamination; furthermore, this model leads to select the effective and optimum remedial strategies for cleaning the contaminated aquifers.
This paper presents the design, fabrication, and testing of the capillary-induced pressure drop valve, thermocapillary pumping of liquid droplet in hydrophilic channels and the splitting of droplet. The capillaryinduced pressure drop is derived with thermodynamic approach considering three-dimensional meniscus shape which is essential for calculating pressure drop in the diverging shape channel when the aspect ratio is close to one. The micro channel is fabricated via MEMS processes, which consists of the liquid stop valve to retard the liquid droplet, thermocapillary pumping region and the bifurcation region. Also the micro heaters are fabricated to drive the droplet by thermocapillary. The theoretical approaches agree well with the experimental data. The functionality of capillary valve is confirmed to be valid when the aspect ratio is smaller than one. To overcome the difficulty in splitting of the droplet due to the pressure drop in the general Y-shape channel, the protrusion shape is employed for easy splitting in the bifurcation channel.

A new 1*4 optical waveguide power divider is proposed and fabricated. It consists of a 1*4 multi-branch structure with a beam separator and two beam expanders that can control the splitting ratios between the output ports. The proposed optical waveguide power divider is designed by employing the two dimensional finite difference beam propagation method and is fabricated by a reactive ion etching method. The splitting ratio of fabricatd device is 25.0 : 25.7 : 25.3 : 24.0 for TE mode and 25.7 : 25.2 : 24.1 : 25.0 for TM mode. Comapred with the conventional Y-branch structure, the proposed structure shortens the length of a 1*N divider by the factor 3. Thus it reduces the total propagation loss and the total radiation loss at the branch points. furthermore, the splitting ratios between the output ports may be controlled in this structure for some special applications.
In this paper, we present a detailed comparison of the performance of the numerical solvers such as the biconjugate gradient stabilized, operator splitting, and multigrid methods for solving the two-dimensional Black-Scholes equation. The equation is discretized by the finite difference method. The computational results demonstrate that the operator splitting method is fastest among these solvers with the same level of accuracy.
