  • This paper describes a Multi-step Digitizing Method and Reverse Model generation algorithm for improvement of reverse engineering accuracy. Reverse engineering is the process of reproducing computational model by directly extracting geometric information on the physical objects. For the improvement of measuring data accuracy, we propose a multi-step digitizing method. First, measuring cloud-of-point by use of a laser scanning system. Second, gathering digitizing data by a scanning touch probe. Fine digitizing plan generated from coarse surface model directly from the cloud-of-point and it allows CMM more accurate scanning data. Finally in this paper we propose the algorithm of generating NURB surface from more accurate measuring points.

  • It is much needed research for ocean scientists to implement a digitizing system that effectively extracts and digitializes sea level records accumulated from the past. The main difficulty of such a system is huge anount of data to be processed. In this paper, we implement a digitizing system to handle such mass-data of sea level records. This system consists of a pre-process step, a digitizing step and a post-process step. In pre-process step, the system adjusts skewnesses of scanned images and normalizes the size of images automatically. Then, it extracts a graph area from images and thins the graph area in digitizing step. Finally, in the post-process step, the system tests the reliability. It is cost-effective and labour-reducing software for scientists not wasting their time to such boring manual digitizing jobs.

  • This paper describes a method for digitizing the compound surfaces which are comprised of several unknown feature shapes such as base surface, and draft wall. From the reverse engineering's point of view, the main step is to digitize or gather three-dimensional points on an object rapidly and precisely. As well known, the non-contact digitizing apparatus using a laser or structured light can rapidly obtain a great bulk of digitized points, while the touch or scanning probe gives higher accuracy by directly contacting its stylus onto the part surface. By combining those two methods, unknown features can be digitized efficiently. The paper proposes a digitizing methodology using the approximated surface model obtained from laser-scanned data, followed by the use of a scanning probe. Each surface boundary curve and the confining area is investigated to select the most suitable digitizing path topology, which is similar to generating NC tool-paths. The methodology was tested with a simple physical model whose shape is comprised of a base surface, draft walls and cavity volumes.

  • The paper presents a feature recognition and segmentation method for surface approximation in reverse engineering. Efficient digitizing plays an important role in constructing a computational surface model from a physical part-surface without its CAD model on hand. Depending on its measuring source (e.g., touch probe or structured light), each digitizing method has its own strengths and weaknesses in terms of speed and accuracy. The final goal of the research focuses on an integration of two different digitizing methods: measuring by the structured light and that by the touch probe. Gathering bulk of digitized points (j.e., cloud-of-points) by use of a laser scanning system, we construct a coarse surface model directly from the cloud-of-points, followed by the segmentation process where we utilize the z-map filleting & differencing to trace out feature boundary curves. The feature boundary curves and the approximate surface model could be inputs to further digitizing by a scanning touch probe. Finally, more accurate measuring points within the boundary curves can be obtained to construct a finer surface model.

  • Historical books are records of information using text and images and is one of the valuable cultural heritages of mankind. However, these books wear, tear and are damaged with time, so we are restricted in our usage of them for study or research. There are many libraries and museums around the world researching a method to digitize the historical books to prevent their collection from damage. Digitizing the historical books not only produce digital images but also a valuable high quality digital information. Digitizing process also keeps the original content of the historical books as well as add a value as research material as a bibliographical, artistic and archaeological item. Furthermore, its information would be provided through a network, like internet, to share and to promote more advanced studies. The purpose of this study is to examine the principles and method of digitization of historical books. This study also researches the meaning and problems of digitizing process for more effective usage.

  • Modern society is the age of a high state of information and demands more effective land information. Moreover, because the use of land in Korea is intensive, Korea requires more synthetic and systematic geographical information for which the digitizing of terrain is prerequisite. This study aims at development of the data structure which is suitable to the digitizing of terrain for Geographical Information System(GIS). Regular grid has been used generally in Digital Terrain Model(DTM), for it is easy to manipulate. But regular cannot reflect well the terrain surface features. In the meantime, Triangulated Irregular Network(TIN) has complex data structure, but it can describe well terrain surface features and is useful in various applications. In this paper the method which constructs effective DTM by improving TIN has been researched.
