  • Generally, the soil around railroad is contaminated by the leakage of oil during its maintenance or the operation of rolling stock. Because the railroad soil is located under ballast and is hardened with the designated strength due to safety, the characteristics of the polluted site are different. In this study, the phenomena of oil diffusion in the railroad site was investigated using 2-D reactor. The used oil was lubricant. As a result, the maximum diffusion depth of lubricant was about 9.5 cm due to its high viscosity and the hardened soil. The lubricant was diffused by gravity more than by horizontal migration. In the future, these results can be applied to develop a remediation method for the contaminated railroad soil.

  • Information spread in networks is universal in many real-world phenomena such as propagation of infectious diseases, diffusion of a new technology, computer virus/spam infection in the internet, and tweeting and retweeting of popular topics. The problem of finding the information source is to pick out the true source if information spread. It is of practical importance because harmful diffusion can be mitigated or even blocked e.g., by vaccinating human or installing security updates. This problem has been much studied, where it has been shown that the detection probability cannot be beyond 31% even for regular trees if the number of infected nodes is sufficiently large. In this paper, we study the impact of an anti-information spreading on the original information source detection. We consider an active defender in the network who spreads the anti-information against to the original information simultaneously and propose an inverse Voronoi partition based inference approach, called Voronoi Inference to find the source. We perform various simulations for the proposed method and obtain the detection probability that outperforms to the existing prior work.

  • To estimatc mutual diffusion coefficient for the analysis of mass transfer phenomena in polymer/solvent system, two models are proposed and the equations are derived. The estimates of mutual diffusion coefficients are obtained by two models suggested in this work and compared with and experimental data and Vrentas-Duda's. Vrentas-Duda's self diffusion coefficient was used for the mutual diffusion coefficient. Derivative of chemical potential on solvent was derived and used using original UNIFAC-FV and modified UNIFAC-FV. However, Vrentas-Duda's equation for mutual diffusion coefficient contains Flory-Huggins parameter x. For the derivative of chemical potential term, Vrentas-Duda assumed that parameter x was constant and independent of temperatures and concentrations The assumption is one of shortcoming in vrentas-Duda's mutual diffusion coefficient. New methods proposed in this work do not have such assumptions and simplifications. For the solvent of cyclohexane, n-pentane, and n-hexane in PIB(polyisolbutylene) and PMS-BR (poly(p-methylstyrene-co-isobutylene), new methods well correlate the experimental data at various temperatures and concentrations, and predicted the experimental data much better than Vrentas-Duda's for the PIB/toluene system. It is shown that new methods are excellent tools for correlating mutual diffusion coefficient data in polymer/solvent system over wide ranges of temperature and concentration without any assumptions or simplifications.

  • Recently, gas turbines for power generation adopt multistage DLN(Dry Low NOx) type combustion, where diffusion combustion is applied at low load and, with increase in load, the combustion mode is changed to lean premixed combustion to reduce NOx emissive concentration. However, during the mode changeover from diffusion to premixed flame, unfavorable phenomena, such as flashback, high amplitude combustion oscillations, or thermal damage of combustor parts could frequently occur. In the present study, to apply for the analysis of such unfavorable phenomena, three-dimensional CFD investigations are carried out to compare the detailed flow characteristics and temperature distribution inside the gas turbine combustor before and after combustion mode changeover. The fuel considered here is pure methane gas. A standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function and a P-N type radiation heat transfer model, have been utilized. To analyze the complex geometric effects of combustor parts on combustion characteristics, fuel nozzles, a swirl vane f3r fuel-air mixing, and cooling air holes on the combustor liner wall, are included in this simulation.

  • To improve the fuel consumption and exhaust emission for gasoline engines, GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) system was spotlighted to solve above requirements. Thus, many researchers have been studied to investigate the spray characteristics and the mixture formation of GDI injector. In this study, we tried to study the spray characteristics of a gasoline direct injector by using entropy analysis and PlV methods. The entropy analysis is based on the concept of statistical entropy, and it identifies the degree of homogeneity in the fuel concentration. The PlV method was adopted to determine the fluid dynamics information at the spray. From the applied results on a direct injection gasoline spray, we could find that the direct diffusion phenomena was a dominant factor in the formation of a homogeneous mixture at downstream of GDI spray especially under vaporizing ambient conditions, and mixing phenomena was also progressed by momentum exchange with induced air. In addition, the correlation between entropy and vorticity strength enabled to find their relation.

  • Electrokinesis and dielectrophoresis are important transport phenomena produced by external electric field applied to a microchannel containing a conductive fluid. We developed a CFD code to predict electrokinetic and dielectrophoretic flows in a microchannel with a uniform circular post array. Using the code, we calculated particle velocities driven by electrokinesis and dielectrophoresis, and conducted Monte Carlo simulations to visualize the particle motions. The code was validated by comparing the results with those from previous studies in literature. At a low electric field, electrokinesis and diffusion is the dominant transport mechanism. At a moderate electric field, dielectrophoresis is balanced with electrokinesis and diffusion, resulting in flowing filaments of particles in the microchannels. However, dielectrophoresis overwhelms the flow at a high electric field and traps particles locally. These results provide useful insight for optimizing design parameters of a microfluidic chip for biochemical analysis, especially for development of on-chip sample pretreatment techniques using electrokinetic and dielectrophoretic effects.

  • Analyzing information diffusion in a blog world is a very useful research issue, which can be used for predicting information diffusion, abnormally detection, marketing, and revitalizing the blog world. Existing studies on information diffusion in blog networks establish explicit relationship between blogs, and analyze only the word-of-mouth effect through such explicit relationships. However, we observed that more than 85% of all information diffusion in a blog world occurs through non-explicit relationships. In this paper, we propose a new model that considers both explicit and non-explicit relationships between blogs in order to explain all information diffusion phenomena in a blog world. We verify the superiority of our proposed models through extensive experiments of information diffusions at a real blog net-work.

  • We have studied the interfacial diffusion phenomena and the role of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer as a diffusion barrier in the $Ba-ferrite/SiO_2$ magnetic thin films for high-density recording media. In the interface of amorphous Ba-ferrite ($1900-{\AA}-thick)/SiO_2$ thin film during annealing, the interfacial diffusion started to occur at ${\sim}700^{\circ}C$. As the annealing temperature increased up to $800^{\circ}C$, the interfacial diffusion abruptly proceeded resulting in the high interface roughness and the deterioration of the magnetic properties. In order to control the interfacial diffusion at the high temperature, we introduced ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer ($110-{\AA}-thick$) in the interface of $Ba-ferrite/SiO_2$ thin film. During the annealing of $Ba-ferrite/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ thin film even at ${\sim}800^{\circ}C$, the interface was very smooth. The smooth interface of the film was also clearly shown by the cross-sectional FESEM. The magnetic properties, such as saturation magnetization 3nd intrinsic coercivity, were also enhanced, due to the inhibition of interfacial diffusion by the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer. Our study suggests that the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer act as a useful interfacial diffusion barrier in the $Ba-ferrite/SiO_2$ thin films.

  • For the purpose of explaining the dewatering phenomena of potato slice soaked in concentrated solution three models were proposed. Earlier model cannot explain the dewatering phenomena of potato slice in concentrated solution because of limiting its condition which is necessary to build a model. Therefore other three models were suggested and a model based on Fick\`s second law of mass transport at infinite plate conditions and numerical analysis was test model for explaining dewatering phenomena of potato soaked in concentrated solution. Apparent diffusion coefficient of water could be readily estimated from model III, and it could explain adequately the difference of the dewatering phenomena of various soaking conditions.

  • The purpose of the present study was to kinetically investigate the carrier-mediated uptake in the hepatic transport of organic anions, and to simulate the ″in vivo counter-transport″ phenomena, using kinetic model which was developed in this study. The condition that the mobility of carrier-ligand complex is greater than that of free carrier is not essential for the occurrence of ″counter-transport″ phenomenon. To examine the inhibitory effects on the initial uptake of a ligand by the liver, it is necessary to judge whether the true counter-transport mechanism (trans-stimulation) is working or not. The initial plasma disappearance curves of a organic anion were then kinetically analyzed based on a flow model, in which the ligand is eliminated only from the peripheral compartment (liver compartment). Moreover, ″in vive counter-transport″ phenomena were simulated based on the perfusion model which incorporated the carrier-mediated transport and the saturable intracellular binding. The ″in vivo counter-transport″ phenomena in the hepatic transport of a organic anion were well demonstrated by incorporating the carrier-mediated process. However, the ″in vivo counter-transport″ phenomena may be also explained by the enhancement of back diffusion due to the displacement of intracellular binding. In conclusion, one should be more cautious in interpreting data obtained from so-called ″in vivo counter-transport″ experiments.
