  • The formation mechanism of the epitaxial cobalt silicide from Co/Ti/OOO) Si structure has been investigated. The transition temperature of CoSi to CoSi, was found to increase with increasing the Ti interlayer thickness, which may be owing to the occupation of the tetrahedral sites by Ti atoms in the CoSi crystal structure as well as the blocking effect of the Ti interlayer on the diffusion of Co. Also, the Co- Ti-O ternary compound formed at the metal! Si interface at the begining of silicidation, which seems to play an important role in epitaxial growth of Co silicide. The final layer structures obtained after a rapid thermal annealing of the Cot Ti/( 100) Si bi-layer structure turned out to be Ti oxide/Co- Ti-Si/epi-$CoSi_2$/OOO)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the mechanism of moisture transfer depend on the thickness of the spruce(Picea sitchensis Carr.). Therefore, as the basic research of moisture transmission, the amount of moisture transmission and the moisture distribution in specimens and temperature of it's surfaces in vapor transmission process were investigated. The experiment was conducted in a steady state. and the moisture distribution was measured by knife cutting and weighing the specimens. The following conclusions were obtained ; 1. It can be found that distribution of moisture in the specimen can be approximated by two different straight lines intersecting at nine or ten percent moisture content. The amount of moisture movement defends on the gradient of moisture in the wood. 2. It is investigated that the wood surface moisture contents(MCs) are less for thinner specimens than for thick ones on the absorption side. On the other hand, the wood surface MCs are greater for thinner specimens than for thick ones on the desorption side. The main factor that affects the EMC of wood would be temperature when the relative humidity of atmosphere is constant. The specimen generate heat with the absorption and desorption process. In addition, the velocities of moisture transmission varied with the thicknesses of specimens. If the temperature of wood becomes greater, its MC decreases. Then the difference between surface MC and EMC of adsorption and desorption side becomes greater for thinner specimens. Therefore it is considered that the coefficients of moisture transfer decreases with the increases of the specimens' thicknesses.

  • Composite membranes were prepared for membrane/cold condensation process for recovery of unreacted olefin monomer from the polyolefin polymerization process by solution coating and plasma polymerization processes. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) solution was coated on polysulfone (PSF) support and increase of prepolymer content in solution made more dense membrane structure to result in the increase of separation factor while absolute flux decreased. Permeation of organic materials through the composite membranes follows the sorption and diffusion mechanism, which brought about the results that separation factor increased with critical temperature of the organic materials, and that flux increased with the increase of the molar volume. Crosslinking period affected the permeation characteristics. Other types of composite membranes were fabricated by plasma polymerization of siloxane materials on polypropylene (PP) and PSF supports. PP was tested as a support for composite membranes, which had not been used so far in solution coating process, and plasma polymerization made the composite membranes equivalent performances to those of membranes prepared by solution coating process.

  • Construction of tunnels in a deep crystalline host rock for a potential High-Level Radioactive Waste(HLW) repository inevitably generates an excavation disturbed zone (EDZ). There have been a series of debates on whether a permeability in an EDZ increases or not and what would be the maximum depth of an EDZ. Recent studies show mixed opinions on permeability. However, there has been an international consensus on the thickness of an EDZ; 30 cm for TBM and 1 meter for controlled blast. One of the impacts of an EDZ is on determining the distance between adjacent deposition holes. The void gap by the excavation hinders relaxation of temperature profiles so that the current Korean reference designing distance between holes should be stretched out more to keep the maximum temperature in a buffer region below 100 degrees Celsius. The other impact of an EDZ is on the long-term post closure radiological safety. To estimate the impact, the reference scenario, the well scenario, is chosen. Released nuclides diffuse through a bentonite buffer region experiencing strong sorption and reach a fracture surrounded by a porous medium. Inside a fractured porous region, radionuclides migrate by advection and dispersion with matrix diffusion into a porous medium. Finally, they reach a well assumed to be a source of potable water for local residents. The annual individual dose is assessed on this well scenario to find out the significance of an EDZ. A profound sensitivity study was performed, but all results show that the impact is negligible. Even though the role of an EDZ turns out to be limited on overall safety assessment, still it is worthwhile to study the chemical role of an EDZ, such as a potential source for natural colloids, potential sealing of an open fracture by fine clay particles generated by the process of an EDZ, and alteration of a sorption mechanism by an EDZ in the future.

  • During depolarization, extrusion of $Ca^{2+}$ from sarcoplasmic reticulum through forward-mode $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchange was studied in the rat ventricular myocytes patch-clamped in whole-cell configuration. In order to confine the $Ca^{2+}$ responses in a micro-domain by limiting the $Ca^{2+}$ diffusion time, rat ventricular myocytes were dialyzed with high (14 mM) EGTA. $K^+$ current was suppressed by substituting KCl with 105 mM CsCl and 20 mM TEA in the pipette filling solution and by omitting KCl in the external Tyrode solution. $Cl^-$ current was suppressed by adding 0.1 mM DIDS in the external Tyrode solution. During stimulation roughly mimicking action potential, the initial outward current was converted into inward current, $47{\pm}1%$ of which was suppressed by 0.1 mM $CdCl_2.$ 10 mM caffeine increased the remaining inward current after $CdCl_2$ in a cAMP-dependent manner. This caffeine-induced inward current was blocked by $1\;{\mu}M$ ryanodine, $10\;{\mu}M$ thapsigargin, 5 mM $NiCl_2,$ or by $Na^+\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ omission, but not by $0.1\;{\mu}M$ isoproterenol. The $I{\sim}V$ relationship of the caffeine-induced current elicited inward current from -45 mV to +3 mV with the peak at -25 mV. Taken together, it is concluded that, during activation of the rat ventricular myocyte, forward-mode $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchange extrudes a fraction of $Ca^{2+}$ released from sarcoplasmic reticulum mainly by voltage-sensitive release mechanism in a micro-domain in the t-tubule, which is functionally separable from global $Ca^{2+}{_i}$ by EGTA.

  • Nitric oxide (NO), a diffusible gas, is produced in the central nervous system, including the spinal cord dorsal horn and the trigeminal nucleus, the first central areas processing nociceptive information from periphery. In the spinal cord, it has been demonstrated that NO acts as pronociceptive or antinociceptive mediators, apparently in a concentration-dependent manner. However, the central role of NO in the trigeminal nucleus remains uncertain in support of processing the orofacial nociception. Thus, we here investigated the central role of NO in formalin (3%)-induced orofacial pain in rats by administering membrane-permeable or -impermeable inhibitors, relating to the NO signaling pathways, into intracisternal space. The intracisternal pretreatments with the NO synthase inhibitor L-NAME, the NO-sensitive guanylate cyclase inhibitor ODQ, and the protein kinase C inhibitor GF109203X, all of which are permeable to the cell membrane, significantly reduced the formalin-induced pain, whereas the membrane-impermeable NO scavenger PTIO significantly enhanced it, compared to vehicle controls. These data suggest that an overall effect of NO production in the trigeminal nucleus is pronociceptive, but NO extracellularly diffused out of its producing neurons would have an antinociceptive action.

  • A space plasma facility has been operated with a back-diffusion-type plasma source installed in a mid-sized vacuum chamber with a diameter of ~1.5 m located in Satellite Technology Research Center (SaTReC), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). To generate plasma with a temperature and density similar to the ionospheric plasma, nickel wires coated with carbonate solution were used as filaments that emit thermal electrons, and the accelerated thermal electrons emitted from the heated wires collide with the neutral gas to form plasma inside the chamber. By using a disk-type Langmuir probe installed inside the vacuum chamber, the generation of plasma similar to the space environment was validated. The characteristics of the plasma according to the grid and plate anode voltages were investigated. The grid voltage of the plasma source is realized as a suitable parameter for manipulating the electron density, while the plate voltage is suitable for adjusting the electron temperature. A simple physical model based on the collision cross-section of electron impact on nitrogen molecule was established to explain the plasma generation mechanism.

  • Recently, high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) has attracted considerable attentions due to its high potential for industrial applications. By pulsing the sputtering target with high power density and short duration pulses, a high plasma density and high ionization of the sputtered species can be obtained. HIPIMS has exhibited several merits such as increased coating density, good adhesion, microparticle-free and smooth surface, which make the HIPIMS technique desirable for synthesizing hard coatings. However, hard coatings present intrinsic defects (columnar structures, pinholes, pores, discontinuities) which can affect the corrosion behavior, especially when substrates are active alloys like steel or in a wear-corrosion process. Atomic layer deposition (ALD), a CVD derived method with a broad spectrum of applications, has shown great potential for corrosion protection of high-precision metallic parts or systems. In ALD deposition, the growth proceeds through cyclic repetition of self-limiting surface reactions, which leads to the thin films possess high quality, low defect density, uniformity, low-temperature processing and exquisite thickness control. These merits make ALD an ideal candidate for the fabrication of excellent oxide barrier layer which can block the pinhole and other defects left in the coating structure to improve the corrosion protection of hard coatings. In this work, CrN/Al2O3/CrN multilayered coatings were synthesized by a hybrid process of HIPIMS and ALD techniques, aiming to improve the CrN hard coating properties. The influence of the Al2O3 interlayer addition, the thickness and intercalation position of the Al2O3 layer in the coatings on the microstructure, surface roughness, mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors were investigated. The results indicated that the dense Al2O3 interlayer addition by ALD lead to a significant decrease of the average grain size and surface roughness and greatly improved the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the CrN coatings. The thickness increase of the Al2O3 layer and intercalation position change to near the coating surface resulted in improved mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The mechanism can be explained by that the dense Al2O3 interlayer acted as an excellent barrier for dislocation motion and diffusion of the corrosive substance.

  • Fast recovery diodes (FRDs) were developed using the $p^{{+}{+}}/n^-/n^{{+}{+}}$ epitaxial layers grown by low temperature epitaxy technology. We investigated the effect of electrostatic discharge (ESD) stresses on their electrical and switching properties using current-voltage (I-V) and reverse recovery time analyses. The FRDs presented a high breakdown voltage, >450 V, and a low reverse leakage current, < $10^{-9}$ A. From the temperature dependence of thermal activation energy, the reverse leakage current was dominated by thermal generation-recombination and diffusion, respectively, at low and high temperature regions. By virtue of the abrupt junction and the Pt drive-in for the controlling of carrier lifetime, the soft reverse recovery behavior could be obtained along with a well-controlled reverse recovery time of 21.12 ns. The FRDs exhibited excellent ESD robustness with negligible degradations in the I-V and the reverse recovery characteristics up to ${\pm}5.5$ kV of HBM and ${\pm}3.5$ kV of IEC61000-4-2 shocks. Likewise, transmission line pulse (TLP) analysis reveals that the FRDs can handle the maximum peak pulse current, $I_{pp,max}$, up to 30 A in the forward mode and down to - 24 A in the reverse mode. The robust ESD property can improve the long term reliability of various power applications such as automobile and switching mode power supply.

  • We report some methods for measuring a LiNbO$_3$ optical phase modulator bandwidth. Since Mach-Zehnder waveguide type, one of methods for modulation bandwidth measurement, is comparatively simple and useful, it was adapted in this work. In order to confirm this method, the waveguide of single and Mach-Zehnder type were fabricated on the same wafer. The Mach-Zehnder interferometric waveguide and the single channel waveguide were used for the measurement of the phase modulator's driving voltage and bandwidth for device fabrications, respectively. Ti-860$\AA$ in-diffusion was achieved in a wet-bubbling oxygen environment at 105$0^{\circ}C$/8hours. LINbO$_3$ internal chips were pigtailed to PMF(polarization maintaining fiber)/SMF(single mode fiber) using an epoxy curing technique. Examined were optical properties such as an insertion loss, propagation loss and mode size, and the loss mechanism of optical coupling between an optical fiber and a waveguide was considered.
