  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep duration and school adjustment of elementary-, middle-, high-school youth and to verify the mediating effects of parenting behavior. Methods: We analyzed the data from Wave 4 of the first-grade panel of elementary school and Waves 1 and 4 of the first-grade panel of middle school in Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), including 1,703 fourth graders, 2,119 seventh graders, and 2,108 tenth graders. Multiple regression was used for the data analyses. Results: The results of this study were as follows. First, longer sleep duration was associated with a higher level of school adjustment in fourth grade. In contrast, longer sleep duration was associated with a lower level of school adjustment in seventh and tenth grades. Second, longer sleep duration was related to a higher level of discipline through reasoning in fourth grade. However, longer sleep duration was related to a lower level of parental monitoring in seventh and tenth grades. Third, the relationship between sleep duration and school adjustment was mediated by parenting behavior. Discipline through reasoning had a mediating effect in fourth grade, but the mediating effect of parental monitoring was found in seventh and tenth grades. Conclusion: These results suggest a differentiated approach on sleep duration in accordance with developmental stage and the need for parent education.

  • Ubiquitous services are high quality and differentiated services which are provided for users by recognizing the context of users and environmental conditions actively. In this case, context-aware middleware is one of the most important technologies required to implement the ubiquitous services. In this paper, we propose a method for providing ubiquitous services in a specific user space effectively and monitoring human bio-sensors. That is, the design and implementation of intelligent home service middleware and monitoring bio-sensors based on context awareness is discussed here. Context information from various sensors is gathered, and suitable services are inferred and provided to users by the middleware system. In our approach, user services can be modelled easily by using facts and rules, and the system can be extended easily to support various ubiquitous services other than intelligent home services also. The system can be integrated with external applications and legacy systems effectively by using various protocols such as RMI, socket and HTTP, XML and etc. We have designed and evaluated various facts and rules for intelligent home services in real environments. Functionality evaluation with the system shows that ubiquitous services can be provided to users effectively in a home environment.

  • Cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and adaptation to environmental changes are regulated by protein phosphorylation. In order to enhance the understanding of molecular dynamics for biological process in detail, it is necessary to develop sensitive and comprehensive analytical methods for the determination of protein phosphorylation. Neural stem cells hold great promise for neural repair following an injury or disease. In this study, we made differentiated oligodendrocytes from human neural stem cells using over-expression of olig2 gene. We confirmed using quantitative phosphoproteome analysis approach that combines stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) and $TiO_2$ micro-column for phosphopeptide enrichment with $MS^2$ and $MS^3$ mass spectrometry. We detected 275 phosphopeptides which were modulated at least 2-fold between human neural stem cells and oligodendrocytes. Among them, 23 phosphoproteins were up-regulated in oligodendrocytes and 79 phosphoproteins were up-regulated in F3 cells.

  • Background and Objectives : In the TNM 6th classification system, extrathyroidal invasion of differentiated thyroid carcinoma has been classified into T3(minimal invasion), T4a(extended invasion), and T4b(more extensive unresectable invasion) according to the degree and it has been recognized as an important prognostic factor. In this study, we investigated the prognostic significances of minimal extrathyroidal invasion in papillary thyroid carcinoma(PTC). Material and Methods : We retrospectively studied 221 patients who are underwent thyroidectomy due to PTC from September 2003 to December 2006. Fifty-four(24.4%) patients had a PTC with minimal extrathyroidal invasion(Group A) and 167(75.6%) patients had a PTC without extrathyroidal invasion(Group B). The existence of minimal extrathyroidal invasion was based on operative and pathological findings. Results : Minimal extrathyroidal invasion in PTC was related to tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and operative method(p<0.001). But, there is no significant difference in age, gender, and multifocality between Group A and B. Hashimoto's thyroiditis was observed more frequently in Group B(p=0.019). Conclusion : These findings suggest that minimal extrathyroidal invasion is related to poor prognostic factors in PTC. Therefore, aggressive surgical approach is required when there is evidence of minimal extrathyroidal invasion in preoperative radiologic examination or operative finding.

  • With the competitive environment accelerating in healthcare industry, the hospital network system is considered as one of the strategies for clinical and managerial efficiency. This study was intended to offer a theoretical view on the hospital network system and to analyze the current network status of hospitals in Korea. Specifically, network types were classified based on the criteria modified from previous studies, and were used to describe and compare the scope and intensity of associated activities. The questionnaire survey was conducted with 237 hospitals during the period of December 27 2005 to January 25 2006. Above 90% of tertiary and secondary care hospitals were under the network system, while only 20% of primary care clinics were affiliated. In general, the scope and intensity of network activities was limited. Vertical and/or clinical integration was more common than horizontal and/or managerial integration. Three most frequent types of hospital network systems were clinical-vertical integration (Type A), clinical/managerial-vertical integration(Type B), and clinical/managerial-horizontal /vertical integration (Type C). Such network types differentiated significantly different features of affiliated hospitals and network systems. The affiliation duration to the network system was the only significant factor influencing on the network type. The strategic approach to the network system was emphasized for hospitals to increase the potential advantage of hospital network systems.

  • Human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (hPDLF) are very important for curing the periodontal tissue because they can be differentiated into various cells. A tissue engineering approach using a cell-scaffold is essential for comprehending today's periodontal tissue regeneration procedure. This study examined the possibility of using an acellular dermal matrix as a scaffold for human periodontalligament fibroblast (hPDLF). The hPDLF was isolated from the middle third of the root of periodontally healthy teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons. The cells were cultured in a medium containing Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum at $37^{\circ}C$ in humidified air with 5% $CO_2$. The acellular dermal matrix(ADM) was provided by the US tissue banks(USA). Second passage cells were used in this study. The hPDLF cells were cultured with the acellular dermal matrix for 2 days, and the dermal matrix cultured by the hPDLF was transferred to a new petri dish and used as the experimental group. The control group was cultured without the acellular dermal matrix, The control and experimental cells were cultured for six weeks. The hPDLF cultured on the acellular dermal matrix was observed by Transmission Electron microscopy (TEM). Electron micrography shows that the hPDLF was proliferated on the acellular dermal matrix. This study suggests that the acellular dermal matrix can be used as a scaffold for hPDLF.

  • 1. Objective : This study aims to evaluate the medical tourism structures in countries with prosperous medical tourism industry such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and India in order ro propose optimal strategies that can promote the medical tourism in Korea. 2. Methods : All pertinent literature concerning medical tourism directly and indirectly were assessed, and reviews of medical tourism strategies found in various countries were evaluated. 3. Results : Evaluation of related literature reveals that medical tourism is a recent burgeoning industry that has grown In market size considerably in the last five to ten years. Also, it shows that oriental medicine is a highly likely candidate amidst the various medical fields for attraction foreign patients. 4. Conclusion : The Korean government should support and install appropriate legal and administrative bodies in order to attract medical tourists; Korea-specific medical tourism programs (ie. traditional Korean medicine package tours) should be developed in order to attract medical tourists from the western world and the middle-east. In addition, low-price policy of medical tourism is not a proper strategies for the competition against advanced medical tourism destinations such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and India. Differentiated medical tourism package such as oriental medical tourism program rather than provision of low-price policy seems to be more effective strategy for the medical tourism in Korea. Future studies on strategies for promoting medical tourism should focus on how foreigners recognize traditional Korean medicine, what diagnostic approach might be appealing to them and how the legal system concerning the medical procedures may be altered and modified.
