Large and small starch granules were isolated and characterized from kernels of Hiproly barley. Average size of large granules were $28-30{\mu}m$ and that of small granules were $6{\mu}m$. The small granules consist of 95% of total starch granules. Large granules contained more amylose than small granules. Distribution of isoamylase-debranched starch components, X-ray diffraction patterns, gelatinization characteristics by differential scanning calorimetry, and starch-granule susceptibility to acid were investigated. Large granules contained more long B chains of amylopectin and had the lower ratios of Fr. III to Fr. II , which represent one of the structural characteristics of amylopectin, than those of small granules. Small granules had higher conclusion temperature and smaller heat of gelatinization than those of large granules by D.S.C.. Both granules had A-type pattern of X-ray diffractopgrams, but hydrolysis of granules with acid showed different A-type patterns between large and small granules.
During excavation work for the construction of a highway bridge in a limestone area in Korea, several cavities were found, and construction work was stopped temporarily. Cavities under the bridge piers might seriously threaten the safety of the planned bridge, because they could lead to excessive subsidence and differential settlement of the pier foundations. In order to establish a method for reinforcement of the pier foundations, borehole radar reflection and tomography surveys were carried out, to locate cavities under the planned pier locations and to determine their sizes where they exist. Since travel time data from the crosshole radar survey showed anisotropy, we applied an anisotropic tomography inversion algorithm assuming heterogeneous elliptic anisotropy, in order to reconstruct three kinds of tomograms: tomograms of maximum and minimum velocities, and of the direction of the symmetry axis. The distribution of maximum velocity matched core logging results better than that of the minimum velocity. The degree of anisotropy, defined by the normalized difference between maximum and minimum velocities, was helpful in deciding whether an anomalous zone in a tomogram was a cavity or not. By careful examination of borehole radar reflection and tomography images, the spatial distributions of cavities were delineated, and most of them were interpreted as being filled with clay and/or water. All the interpretation results implied that two faults imaged clearly by a DC resistivity survey were among the most important factors controlling the groundwater movement in the survey area, and therefore were closely related to the development of cavities. The method of reinforcement of the pier foundations was based on the interpretation results, and the results were confirmed when construction work was resumed.
Ferulic acid (3-methoxy, 4-hydroxy cinnamic acid) is a flavoid component possessing antioxidant property. The compound is currently under development as a new drug candidate for the treatment of the dementia. The objective of this preformulation study was to determine the physicochemical properties of ferulic acid. The n-octanol to water partition coefficients of ferulic acid were 0.375 and 0.489 at the pHs of 3 and 10, respectively. Accelerated stability study for ferulic acid indicated that the t 90 value for the drug was estimated to be 459 days at $25^{\circ}C$. Ferulic acid was also found to be unstable under the relative humidity of more than 76%, probably because of the hygroscopic nature of the drug. In order to study compatibility of ferulic acid with typical excipients, potential change in differential scanning calorimetry spectrum was studied in 1: 1 binary mixtures of ferulic acid and typical pharmaceutical excipients (e.g., Aerosil, Avicel, CMC, Eudragit, lactose, PEG, PVP, starch and talc). Avicel, CMC, PVP and starch were found to be incompatible with ferulic acid, indicating the addition of these excipients may complicate the manufacturing of the formulation for the drug. Particle size distribution of ferulic acid powder was in the size range of 10-190 $\mu$m with the mean particle size of 61 $\mu$m. The flowability of ferulic acid was apparently inadequate, indicating the granulation may be necessary for the processing of the drug to solid dosage forms. Two polymorphic forms were obtained by recrystallization from various solvents used in formulation. New polymorphic form of ferulic acid, Form II, was obtained by recrystallization from 1,4-dioxane. The equilibrium solubility for Form I was approximately twice of that for Form II. The dissolution rate of Form II was higher than that of Form I in the early phase (<6 min). Therefore, these physicochemical information has to be taken in the consideration for the formulation of ferulic acid.
Nanoparticles with unsaturated poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s (UPHAs) biosynthesized with Pseudo-monas oleovorans were prepared by spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method. The influence of nanoparticle formation was investigated with various experimental parameters such as sonication conditions, sol-vent, surfactant and polymer contents, etc. The physical and chemical properties of UPHAS and its nanoparticles were characterized using $^1$H- and $\^$13/C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and gel permeation chromatography. The morphology of particles was observed using scanning electron microscope and the size and distribution of nanoparticles were measured with electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotometer. The mean diameter of particles decreased with increasing sonication amplitude and time. The addition of ethanol into UPHAS chloroform solution decreased the particle size presumably due to increased solvent diffusion into water phase. The particle size increased with increased the concentration of UPHAS solution. Under the 2-4% poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution the minimum mean diameter of particles was shown. The higher degree of hydrolysis and degree of polymerization of PVA increased the mean diameter of particles.
On 31 July 2014, there was a localized torrential rainfall ($58.5mm\;hr^{-1}$) caused by a strong convective cell with thunder showers over Daegwallyeong. In the surface synoptic chart, a typhoon was positioned in the East China Sea and the subtropical high was expanded to the Korean peninsula. A WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) numerical simulation with a resolution of 1 km was performed for a detailed analysis. The simulation result showed a similar pattern in a reflectivity distribution particularly over the Gangwon-do region, compared with the radar reflectivity. According to the results of the WRF simulation, the process and mechanism of the localized heavy rainfall over Daegwallyeong are as follows: (1) a convective instability over the middle part of the Korean peninsula was enhanced due to the low level advection of warm and humid air from the North Pacific high. (2) There was easterly flow from the coast to the mountainous regions around Daegwallyeong, which was generated by the differential heating of the insolation among Daegwallyeong and the Yeongdong coastal plain, and nearby coastal waters. (3) In addition, westerly flow from the western part of Daegwallyeong caused a strong convergence in this region, generating a strong upward motion combined by an orographic effect. (4) This brought about a new convective cell over Daegwallyeong. And this cell was more developed by the outflow from another thunderstorm cell to the south, and finally these two cells were merged to develop as a strong convective cell with thunder showers, leading to the record breaking maximum rainfall per hour ($58.5mm\;hr^{-1}$) in July.
In this study, average rainfall of basin was estimated and compared with that obtained from Biseulsan dual polarization RADAR. And the runoffs are estimated using Vflo distribution model for Habcheon reservoir basin and Huicheon basin. In the rainfall estimation using dual polarization RADAR, the rainfall was estimated by using the specific phase difference and differential reflectivity of dual polarization RADAR variables. As a result, for all events rainfall estimation using dual polarization RADAR has the closest value to the gauge rainfall in terms of the peak rainfall and total rainfall. Also, runoff simulation results from dual polarization RADAR show the better results. It is concluded that the method using dual polarization radar can improve the accuracy more than a single polarization radar using only horizontal reflectivity.
A multiphysics model analysis including moisture transport, heat transfer and solid mechanics and experiments on the normal and light weight concrete were carried out in order to study the effect of preabsorbed water in the light weight aggregates on the drying and shrinkage characteristics of concrete. Consequently, with fixed water-cement ratio, loss of water content of normal and light weight concrete were compared and the results showed that the lightweight concrete lost less moist than the normal concrete in early age and long term which was by moist supply effect. Accordingly, shrinkage strain size and distribution of lightweight concrete were decreased, and shrinkage reducing effect was efficient in early age with water cement ratio 0.3 and in both early age, and long term with water cement ratio 0.5. The comparison of analysis results and exaperimental results indicate that characteristic values of moisture transport and the relation humidity and shrinkage strain from this study are resonable for application for other differential shrinkage analysis in lightweight concrete.

The error performance of M-ary differential phase shift keying (MDPSK) through m-distribution fading channel in hybrid direct sequence/slow frequency hopped spread spectrum multiple access (DS/SFH-SSMA) systems has been evaluated, and also the error probability has been evaluate when adopting diversity technique and coding technique. From the results, we know that the error performance more deteriorates as depth of fading becomes deeper. In Rayleigh fading environment (m=1), increasing of the number of frequency hopping (q) reduces the effect of multiple access interference, because it decreases the probability a hit. When q is much larger than the number of user (K), the probability of error in high E/N region is dominated by the multipath interference while the multiple access interference is negligible. In lower E/N region, the probability of error is independent of q because the effect of gaussian noise becomes dominat.
This article investigates the static behaviour of functionally graded (FG) plates sometimes declared as advanced composite plates by using a simple and accurate quasi-3D and 2D hyperbolic higher-order shear deformation theories. The properties of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness direction according to exponential law distribution (E-FGM). The kinematics of the present theories is modeled with an undetermined integral component and satisfies the free transverse shear stress conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate; therefore, it does not require the shear correction factor. The fundamental governing differential equations and boundary conditions of exponentially graded plates are derived by employing the static version of principle of virtual work. Analytical solutions for bending of EG plates subjected to sinusoidal distributed load are obtained for simply supported boundary conditions using Navier'is solution procedure developed in the double Fourier trigonometric series. The results for the displacements and stresses of geometrically different EG plates are presented and compared with 3D exact solution and with other quasi-3D and 2D higher-order shear deformation theories to verify the accuracy of the present theory.

One of the viscoelastic flow behaviors during profile extrusion is the swelling of extrudate. In this study, die swell of rubber compound in the capillary die have been investigated through experiment and computer simulation. Simplified viscoelastic model and non-linear differential viscoelastic model such as PTT model have been used in the computer simulation. The simulation results have been compared with experimental data. Experiment and simulation have been performed using fluidity tester and commercial CFD code, Polyflow respectively. Die swells predicted by two models showed good agreement with experimental results. Pressure and velocity distribution, and circulation flow at the corner of reservoir have been well predicted by PTT model. Simplified viscoelastic model can not predict circulation flow at the corner of reservoir. However this model has an advantage in computation time compare with full viscoelastic model, PTT model.
