  • Sound absorbing materials are applied to the exposed surfaces of curved subway tunnel for the reduction of curving noise level. Before the treatment, acoustical engineering simulation is performed to predict the noise level reduction for different kinds and amounts of absorbing material. The principle of geometrical acoustics is utilized to Peform the simulation efficiently and accurately. The noise levels of the inside and outside of running car body are measured to find the noise level reduction. The average noise level reduction of 8 ㏈ has been attained. It has been shown that the simulated results are comparable to the measured ones.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the patterns of tooth movements when distalization of mandibular molars using a mini-plate took place. A finite element analysis was applied to analyze patterns of tooth movements. Methods: The model of the mandible and teeth were used to build a finite element analysis model, and a mini-plate was inserted in the mandibular ramus. Two different orthodontic forces were established for displacement of mandibular molars. Orthodontic forces were applied at the level of the bracket and at the level of the cemento-enamel junction in the mandibular canine respectively. Results: Applying orthodontic forces at the level of the cemento-enamel junction resulted in a greater biomechanical bodily movement in distalization of the mandibular molars compared to when the orthodontic forces were applied at the level of the bracket. Applying orthodontic forces to the cemento-enamel junction also resulted in unwanted greater extrusive movements in distalization of the mandibular molars compared to the bracket level. Conclusions: With considering the mode of orthodontic teeth movement, applying different vertical orthodontic forces for distalization of mandibular molars can lead to more effective distalization of teeth.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the RFID recognition performance by level of water. A 13.56 MHz RFID management system for packaged liquid food logistics is consisted of antenna, reader, passive type tags, and embedded controller. The tests were conducted at different level of water, distances between tag and antenna, and position of attached tags. To analyze the RFID recognition performance, maximum recognition distances for a container and recognition rates for a logistics made of 27 containers were measured and analyzed. The maximum recognition distance for a container was different depending on position of attached tags, and attached tag at upside position showed a good performance. But, the recognition rate of 27 containers showed a good ability for attached tags at front side position, 30~35 cm distance to antenna, and water level 1. Therefore, to manage packaged liquid food logistics using RFID system, position of attached tag, distances between tag and antenna, and level of water should be considered.

  • The diversity of cyanobacteria in Sri Lanka was studied in different water reservoirs, paddy fields, brackish water and tsunami affected areas using light microcopy, 16S rRNA sequences, followed by phylogenetic analysis. Based on light microscopy, 24 genera were identified from environmental samples belonging to the orders Chroococcales, Oscillatoriales, Pleurocapsales and Nostocales. In cultures, 33 genera were identified from all five cyanobacterial orders, including Stigonematales. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and their morphology, two isolates were identified up to species level, 72 to genus level, one isolate up to family and 11 up to order level. Twelve isolates couldn't be assigned to any taxonomic level. The results of 16S rRNA gene sequences along with the phylogenetic analysis indicated that some cyanobacterial isolates could be accommodated to genus or order level. The 16S rRNA sequence analysis data in this study confirmed that order Nostocales and order Pleurocapsales cyanobacteria are monophyletic while orders Chroococcales, Oscillatoriales and Stigonematales cyanobacteria are polyphyletic. Polyphasic approach including the combination of light microscopy, cultures and the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences provide a promising approach to ascertain the diversity of cyanobacteria in different habitats.

  • The purpose of this study was to find how financial structures differ from the family life cycle. The data was drawn from the 2002 Korean Labor and Income Panel Study conducted by the Korea Labor Institute, and 1,957 households. The level of total income and subcategories of income were found to be significantly different from the family life cycle and showed tendencies to increase up to the period of child birth and then sharply dropped down during the retirement period. Household consumption expenditures in total and subcategories showed a U shape by family life cycle and were also found to be significantly different from the family life cycle. The consumption expenditure of dining out showed the highest level at the beginning of family establishment, whereas medical cost showed the highest level for later years. The level of total assets increased gradually from the family life cycle and a little decreased for the later years, and the level of real estate assets showed the highest ratio(90% over) out of total asset components of family life cycle.

  • This study investigates the phonetic meaning of clarity and turbidity(淸濁) that has been used in psychoacoustics, musicology, and linguistics in both the East and the West. With a view to clarifying the phonetic meaning of clarity and turbidity, this study conducts three perception tests. First, 34 subjects were asked to take one of Clear and Turbid by forced choice for 5 pure and complex tones, respectively, ranging from A2 to A6 differing by octave. Second, they were asked to select between the two choices for 25 pure and complex tones, respectively, ranging from A2 to A4 differing by semitone. Third, they were asked to opt for one of the two choices for 8 different vowels of different formant and fundamental frequencies. Results showed that there is a certain range of tone which is perceived as clear, that clarity level increases as fundamental frequency increases, and that pure tones have a higher level of clarity than complex ones, fundamental frequency being equal. Results also showed that vocal tract resonance enhances clarity level on the whole, and that lower vowels have a higher level of clarity than higher ones. This study is significant in that it demonstrates that clarity level is proportional to fundamental frequency and the first formant frequency, all else being equal.

  • Analytical and experimental studies of the innovative pipe in pipe damper have been recently investigated by the authors. In this paper, by adding lead or zinc infill or slit diaphragm inside the inner pipe, it is tried to increase the equivalent viscous damping ratio improving the cyclic performance of the recently proposed multi-level control system. The damper consists of three main parts including the outer pipe, inner pipe and added complementary damping part. At first plastic deformations of the external pipe, then the internal pipe and particularly the added core and friction between them make the excellent multi-level damper act as an improved energy dissipation system. Several kinds of added lead or zinc infill and also different shapes of slit diaphragms are modeled inside the inner pipe and their effectiveness on hysteresis curves are investigated with nonlinear static analyses using finite element method by ABAQUS software. Results show that adding lead infill has no major effect on the damper stiffness while zinc infill and slit diaphragm increase damper stiffness sharply up to more than 10 times depending on the plate thickness and pipe diameter. Besides, metal infill increases the viscous damping ratio of dual damper ranging 6-9%. In addition, obtained hysteresis curves show that the multi-level control system as expected can reliably dissipate energy in different imposed energy levels.

  • Male rats of 2 months-old(young), 6 months-old(adult) and 30 months-old(old)were fed 8 or 16 weeks to investigate the e(feats of dietary fat level on the lipid metabolism in the different stages of aging. The response of 30 month old rats to dietary fat level differed from either 2 or 6-months old rats. In 30-months old rats, dietary fat level had a little effect on weight gains, lipid content of serum as compared with other two age groups. Young rats showed higher body weight gain, F.S.R, and PER compared with aged rat. The younger and the more high fat fed the rats were, the more body weight gains, FER and PER showed. Weight of liver and kidney was increased in aged rats but ratio per unit weight of liver and kidney was not affected by age. Serum lipid content was higher in aged rat compared with the young and liver lipid content was higher in high fat diet fed rats. But TG of liver and serum was not changed with aging process. Intake, excretion and absorption of lipid was not changed by age of animals. but absorption was decreased as experimental period was increased.
