To evaluate fetal sex-hormonal status before delivery, testosterone and follicle stimulating normone(FSH) levels were measured in 64 amniotic fluid samples at midgestation by radioimmunoassay method. The mean concentration of testosterone in amniotic fluid of 37 cases carrying male fetus was 90.7 pg/ml and 27 cases carrying female fetus was 62.3 pg/ml. The mean :amniotic fluid FSH concentration of male fetus was 1.15 mIU/ml and of female fetus was 11.98 mIU/ml. The amniotic fluid testoserone and FSH concentrations had statistical difference between male and female fetuses. The ratio of testosterone over FSH in the amniotic fluid was 231.2 in male, 9.8 in female respectively and very significant difference was noticed. The levels of testosterone/FSH greater than 25 were found over 92% of male fetus and lesser than 25 were found over 92% female fetus. Measurement of testosterone and FSH especially testosterone/FSH ratio in amniotic fluid in midgestation may be an adjunct to other method of fetal sex determination.
This study investigated the relation between parents' verbal control modes and children's maladjustment. The subjects were 445 mothers and their children of sixth grade in elementary schools located in Seoul. To assess the parents' verbal control modes, questionnaire developed by Lee Kyung Hee(1993) was used. The modified version of Achenbach and Edelbrock's CBCL(Child Behavior Checklist) was administered to assess the children's maladjustment. The results were as follows : 1)Significant differences were found in parents' verbal control modes in terms of children's sex difference and social status level. 2) Significant differences were found in children's maladjustment in terms of children's sex difference and social status level. 3) There was a significant correlation between father's verbal control modes and children's maladjustment. Children's maladjustment was related positively to imperative mode and negatively to the person-oriented and position-oriented modes. The best variable explaining girl's maladjustment was father's position-oriented modes. 4) The negative impact of father's imperative mode in combination with the mother's imperative mode on the children's adjustment was greater than other combinations of the father and mother's verbal control modes.
This study was attempted to investigate the main factors affecting health perception of the patients following cardiac valve replacement surgery. Data were collected from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, 1984 through administration of questionnaire developed for this study by the researcher. The subject was 95 patients who received follow up care following cardiac valve replacemert surgery at S.N.U.H. The data were analyzed by T-test, oneway ANOVA, pearson correlation and multiple regression according to dependent variables. The results were as follows. \circled1 Average self-health perception of those patients. were 4.62, (maximum; 7 minimum; 1) and they showed on affirmative response for their health condition, \circled2 There was significant difference in health perception according to sex difference. Men had higher health perception than women. (t=2,83, p=0.006) \circled3 There was significant difference in health perception according to occupation. Those who had occupation showed higher health perception those who had no occupation. (t=3.25, p=0.002) \circled4 The longer post-operative period elapsed, the higher health perception was, and there was significant difference in health perception (f=0.2958, p=0.002). \circled5 The higher age was, the lower health perception was, and there was a significant difference in health perception. (${\gamma}$= -0.2485, p=0.008) \circled6 The fewer subjective psychosomatic symptoms were, the higher health perception was, and there was a significant difference in health perception. (f = -0.4988, p=0.0000) \circled7 The more active daily activities were, the higher health perception was, and there was a significant difference in health perception. (${\gamma}$=0.6359 p=0.0000) \circled8 The main factors predicting health perception .are like these. \circled1 Daily activities (42.7%), highest variable. \circled2 Psychosomatic symptoms (7.29%) \circled3 Elapsed period after cardiac valve replacement surgery (1.89%) \circled4 Existence of occupation (1.87%) \circled5 Sex (1.78%) \circled6 Age (0.8%).
This study investigated the relation of androgynous parent's child-rearing practices to children's self-perceived competence by comparison of the effectiveness of androgynous people as parents compared with parents who are other-typed in their sex-role identity. The subjects were 362 third and sixth grade children and their parents selected from two elementary schools in Seoul. The instruments were a children's self-perceived competence scale, a perception of maternal warmth and control scale, a perception of paternal warmth and control scale, parent's self-esteem scale, and parent's sex-role identity scale. Frequencies, percentiles, mean, ${\chi}^2$ test, two way-ANOVA, one way-ANOVA, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ and $Scheff{\acute{e}}$-test were used for data-analysis. The major findings showed that (1) Androgynous and masculine fathers had higher self-esteem than feminine or undifferentiated fathers. Androgynous, masculine, and feminine mothers had higher self-esteem than undifferentiated mothers. (2) There was no difference in children's perception of parental warmth and control as related to parent's sex-role identity. Androgynyous parents were not more likely to be authoritative parents. (3) Sons of androgynous parents had higher self-perceived competence than those of sex-typed parents, while daughters of sex-typed parents had higher self-perceived competence than those of androgynous parents.
Globally, esophageal cancer is the seventh most common cancer, and the male-to-female ratio in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is significantly imbalanced at 4:1 to 8:1. Obesity, reflux, and smoking are known risk factors for this sex difference; however, fully explaining this remains challenging. Studies have investigated the link between exogenous sex hormones and esophageal cancer occurrence. A meta-analysis revealed a lower risk of EAC in female who had undergone hormone replacement therapy. Androgen-deprivation therapy in patients with prostate cancer was associated with a decreased risk of EAC. Tissue-based studies have reported varied results regarding the relationship between estrogen receptor expression and survival in female patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Circulating hormone studies have suggested that higher testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels decreased EAC risk in men, and free testosterone was inversely correlated in female with ESCC. However, a high androgen-estrogen ratio in male patients with EAC was linked to increased odds of EAC. Sex hormones influence carcinogenesis, affecting cell proliferation, differentiation, metabolism, inflammation, and cell death. The studies were limited by the small sample size and varying hormone measurement methods; thus, future studies with definitive conclusions on the association between esophageal cancer and sex hormones are warranted.
We studied the sex different nicotine effect on evoked population spike amplitudes (ePSA) and connexin (Cx) expression in the hippocampus CA1 area of gerbils. Acute doses of nicotine bitartrate (0.5 mg/kg: NT-0.5) slightly reduced ePSA in males but markedly augmented that in females. Acute NT (5.0 mg/kg) markedly increased the ePSA in all gerbils. Unlike acute NT-0.5, repeated NT-0.5 injection (twice a day for 7 days) significantly increased the ePSA in males and slightly affected the NT-0.5 effect in females. The Cx36 and Cx43 expression levels as well as Cx expressing neuronal populations were significantly increased by repeated NT-0.5 in in both male and female gerbils, and particularly, Cx43 expression was somewhat prominent in females. These results demonstrated a sex difference with respect to the nicotine effect on hippocampal bisynaptic excitability, irrelevant to connexin expression.
