The purpose of this research was to investigate nursing students' attitude toward body weight control, food behaviors according to their recognition, satisfaction on body image and Body Mass Index(BMI). The subjects were 273 nursing students. A survey was conducted using a self administered questionnaire. The data were an analyzed by a SPSS program. The majority of the surveyed participants were normal range for body mass index(BMI). Most of nursing students preferred a thin body image and were not satisfied with their body image. Most also controlled their body weight for appearance by exercising and the other efforts to change the body weight. From the above results, it is considered that nursing students need to establish proper self-recognition and dietary behaviors for their body images and counseling for desirable body weight control methods.

BACKGROUD/OBJECTIVES: Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) are providers of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) to address health and chronic disease. Traditionally, RDNs have provided care in healthcare facilities including hospitals and private care facilities. The purpose of this study was to determine how RDN individualized MNT in the home impacted nutrition, physical activity, and food security. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis. The mean age of the participants (n = 1,007) was 51.6 years old with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 34.1 kg/m2. Individualized MNT visits were delivered by an RDN in the home setting from January to December 2019. Participants were referred by healthcare professionals or self-referred. Participants had MNT benefits covered by their health insurance plan (43.3% Medicaid; 39.8% private insurance; 7.9% Medicare, 9% other). Health outcomes related to nutrition care were measured. Outcomes included self-reported consumption of nutrition factors and physical activity. Our secondary outcome focused on food security. The changes in weight, BMI, physical activity, and nutrition factors were analyzed by a linear regression model or linear mixed model, adjusting for age, sex, baseline value, and number of appointments. Food security was summarized in a 2 by 2 contingency table. RESULTS: Baseline values had significantly negative impacts for all changes and number of appointments was significant in the changes for weight and BMI. Increases in physical activity were significant for both female and male participants, 10.4 and 12.6 minutes per day, respectively, while the changes in weight and BMI were not. Regarding dietary factors, the consumption total servings per day of vegetables (0.13) and water (3.35) significantly increased, while the consumption of total servings of whole grain (-0.27), fruit (-0.32), dairy (-0.80) and fish (-0.81) significantly decreased. About 24% (of overall population) and 45% (of Medicaid population) reported improvements in food security. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that home visits were a useful setting for MNT delivered by RDNs. There is a strong need for individualized counseling to meet the participants' needs and personal goals.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to develop a sodium index, which is a tool for estimating and assessing sodium intake easily and quickly, to assist in the prevention of various diseases induced by excess sodium intake in Korean adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The 24-h urine collection and dietary behavior surveys were performed on 640 healthy people in 4 regions of South Korea, and an equation for the estimation of 24-h sodium intake was developed. The validity and reliability of the equation were verified with 200 adults. The sodium index was developed by converting the estimated sodium intake using the equation. Finally, the sodium intake status of 1,600 adults was assessed using the sodium index. RESULTS: The equation included sex, age, body mass index, eating habit and dietary behaviors related to sodium intake. In validity test of the equation, the mean bias between sodium intake using 24-h urine analysis and using the equation from the Bland-Altman plots was -1.5 mg/day. The sensitivity and specificity of the equation for estimation of sodium intake were 80.5% and 64.4%, respectively. In the reliability test of the equation, there was no significant difference between the first and second sodium intakes calculated using the equations, and Spearman's correlation coefficient between the 2 sodium intakes was 0.98. Sodium intake can be assessed as 'very moderate' for 75-100 on the sodium index, 'moderate' for 100-150, 'careful' for less than 75 or 150-200, and 'severe' for 250 or more. When sodium intake was assessed using the sodium index in 1,600 subjects, 54.3% and 24.3% of the subjects were assessed to be in the 'careful' and 'severe' categories, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Using a simple questionnaire, the sodium index can be used to monitor and assess sodium intake status, assisting in nutrition education and counseling in a large population.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of an obesity program developed to solve 'obesity', which was selected as the top priority for urgent improvement among the dietary problems of elementary school students in Busan. The program aimed to practice four health rules every day (sleep early, eat two vegetables with each meal, reduce sugary snacks, and exercise for 30 minutes every day). The participants were trained to practice the four rules online in real time every day for three weeks, and their performance in nutrition education tasks was monitored using Padlet. The anthropometric measurements showed no change in the overall average weight before and after participating in the program, but all students grew in height (z=-6.978, P<0.001), and the number of obese students decreased significantly (z=-3.317, P<0.001). This obesity program was effective in improving height growth and obesity in elementary school students. In terms of dietary changes, after participating in the program, the frequency of vegetable consumption increased significantly (z=-4.849, P<0.001), the frequency of sweet snack consumption decreased significantly (z=-4.298, P<0.001), and the bedtime improved (z=-1.000). Therefore, the non-face-to-face, self-directed obesity program developed in this study is expected to reduce the workload of nutrition teachers carrying a heavy workload such as meal service and nutrition classes, and can be used as an efficient nutrition counseling program.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the feeding patterns, use of dietary supplements, and nutrient intake of Korean toddlers. Methods: We used data for 930 toddlers who participated in the 4th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2007 to 2009. Feeding patterns and use of dietary supplements were assessed using standardized questionnaires, and nutrition intake was assessed using the 24 hr recall method. Results: In 2007~2009, 48.7% of toddlers used dietary supplements. Most parents (95.4%) initiated a regime of dietary supplements for their children following the advice of friends or relatives. Only 0.4% of parents followed the advice given by their doctors for dietary supplements use. In the survey of nutrient intake for toddlers, the prevalence of inadequate calcium intake was 53.9% for subjects aged 1 year, 55.2% for 2 years and 65.6% for subjects aged 3 years. The prevalence of inadequate iron intake was 52.0% for subjects aged 1 year, 48.7% for 2 years and 48.4% for subjects aged 3 years. In the survey performed on feeding patterns of toddlers during the infant period, mixed feeding accounted for 57.4%, breast feeding for 32.2%,and formula feeding for 10.4%. Sixty-five percent of toddlers began weaning between 4 and 6 months. Conclusions: This study indicated that a number of toddlers were at risk of inadequate calcium and iron intake. The role of professionals in counseling for qualified dietary intake and dietary supplement use is therefore necessary for Korean toddlers.
The performance of educational program for preventive nutrition is more beneficial for children than for the adults based on the cost reduction and the effect of this education. Also children's education helps them to grow and to live as a healthy adult. The purpose of this study is to solve the nutritional problem in children by developing nutrition education program for children and correct their nutritional problems. The characteristics of this program (www.food79.net) are the customized program for grade level based on the level of learning ability, the various education method such as game, cooking practice, and quiz, animation, and the self educated method by managing children's meal management as the result. The contents of this site are constructed not only for children but also for parents, the teachers and the school dietitians to increasing educational effect. The children room consists of food tower, nutrition kingdom, calculation of obesity index, food information, nutrient exploration, cooking world, and evaluation of dietary life. In the room for dietitian and teachers include the contents of the easy gymnastics, nutrition counseling methods, the teaching plans for nutrition education, and the information interchange corner. The third room for parents is constructed of nutrition evaluation, food 114, correction of living habits, and free discussion. Through this site, we are expecting to contribute to national health promotion by correcting the food habits of children.
The study aims to examine college students' practice characteristics related to diet and to identify factors determining their diet practice. The subjects were college students (N=387) in Youngnam region; a questionnaire survey was conducted in May, 2007. The data were analyzed by SPSS Windows. The results are as follows: first, the ratio of female students going on a diet is higher than that of male students. Second, according to the BMI, female students more regard themselves as being overweight than male students do, although they are underweight or normal weight. Third, in the interest in diet, almost half the students think of themselves as being "somewhat" or "much" concerned about diet. Fourth, the binary logistic regression analysis shows that the significant factors affecting female students' diet practice are the variables of "grade", "interest in diet", "body image evaluation in the individuals", "information/education requirement on dietary guidelines", and "necessity to go on a diet". On the other hand, the significant variables affecting male students' diet practice are the variables of "to take diet- or health-related courses", "interest in diet", "diet knowledge", and "diet practice".
The purpose of this research was to investigate perception, knowledge, and practice level for school food hygiene and need for hygiene education with 300 students of elementary schools in Daegu. The average of correct answer percentage on knowledge about food hygiene of the respondents was 65.3%. For practice level of personal hygiene in school food, the average score was 3.75 out of 5 points. The ratio of educational experience of hygiene and dietary behaviors at home was 73.2%. Almost half of the respondents answered that 'food ingredients' should be the most hygienic. About 90% of the respondents recognized 'hand washing' had effect on prevention of foodborne illness. In addition, the respondents wanted to get the information about food hygiene from 'cooking practice at school', 'school broadcasting', 'education program on TV', and 'school newsletter' in order. These results suggest that continuous education on food hygiene for elementary school students are required and supervision to let them have proper hygiene habit is needed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between BMI, eating disorders, physical symptoms and self-esteem. Methods: The research design was a descriptive correlation study. Data collection was done by using a constructive self-report questionnaire, a total 231 elementary school girls were measured. This study aimed to assess body features, and alimentary and lifestyle behavior related to cancer prevention among Romanian adults having relatives with cancer. The study was performed in 2010/2011 in an oncological hospital in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. It involved 320 adults who had relatives with cancer. An anonymous questionnaire was filled in by each participants; their weights and heights were measured and body mass index (BMI) was calculated, 56.6% of the participants having a value higher than 24.9. Almost all subjects ate less than 400g of fruits and vegetables daily and 56% of the participants consumed more than 500 g of red meat weekly. One quarter of the study sample was performing less than 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily. Some 28.1% of the subjects were smokers. These data call for comprehensive actions to help Romanian cancer patient relatives to respect the recommendations regarding healthy lifestyle promotion and cancer prevention. Health professionals should periodically assess body composition and lifestyle components of adults who have relatives with cancer in order to identify unhealthy behavior and offer them personalized education and counseling.
