Mucormycosis in a group of chickens (닭에 집단 발병한 뮤코마이코시스)

  • The etiologic agents of mucormycosis are several nonpathogenic fungi of the order Mucorales and are ubiquitous. A total of 82 chickens were infected with the disease and developed anorexia, diarrhea, malnutrition, dyspnea, and paralysis in a chicken farm, Sokcho, Kwangwon. At necropsy there were multiple nodular lesions and hemorrhages in livers, spleens, kidneys, gastrointestinal track, and respiratory system. On histopathological examination it was found that the nodular lesions were consisted of granoulomatous inflammation accompanying characteristic hyphae ($4{\sim}24{\mu}$ wide) of the fungi.

Detection of VTe-producing E coli using PCR method (PCR 기법 이용 VTe 분비 대장균 검출)

  • Several methods for rapid and accurate detection of VTe-producing E coli were established. These methods contain beta-glucuronidase-secretion test, beta-haemolysis-production test in blood agar, verocytotoxicity test, and PCR. All of the VTe-producing strains made beta-haemolysis on 5% sheep blood agar. VTe-producing strains secreted beta-glucuronidase whereas 0157:H7 strains producing VTI or VTII did not secrete that enzyme. Verocytotoxicity test was established for rapid diagnosis. VTe detection was rapider in Vero cell suspension than Vero cell monolayer. In PCR, there was a positive result only in VTe-producing E coli, not in VTI or VTII-producing E coli. In this experiment, 165 strains of E coli were islated from feces or intestinal contents of post-weaning piglets showing nervous sign or diarrhea. And 20 strains of E coli that produced VTe were selected by verocytotoxicity test and PCR. According to these experiments, there was a direct correlation between verocytotoxicity test and PCR. And verocytotoxicity test is recommended as a routine diagnostic method and PCR does as a accurate diagnostic method to detect VTe-producing E coli.

  • Jang Jong-jeong thought that, because all diseases come from miasma, for treating diseases, it is important to attack or remove miasma infiltrating into the body. Thus, he treated diseases using three methods, namely, vomiting against miasma on the top, sweating against miasma on the surface, and diarrhea against miasma on the bottom. Among them, vomiting is rarely used in contemporary Oriental medicine, but still one of major disease treatment methods. Vomiting is quite meaningful in today's clinics and particularly effective for acute diseases, the miasma of which is in the upper chest. According to the present researcher's experiences, it is effective in cases that the pathological symptoms are observed in the upper chest such as early stroke, dyspepsia, chest congestion and congestion heat. For vomiting, the researcher applied Dokseongsan, Samseongsan, Gwachesan, Gangyeomtang, Bangpungtongseongsan, etc. Dokseongsan was used for vomiting in a cool way, and Samseongsan and Gwachesan were used for vomiting in a warm way. Bangpungtongseongsan was used when inner heat was choked up by the attack of external miasma and when the pathological symptoms of Bangpungtongseongsan were observed.

  • Swine proliferative enteritis(SPE) caused by inかsoma intracellularis is a common enteric disaese of grower and finisher pig. Swine affected with SPE show variable clinical signs including diarrhea, weight loss, aberrant growth and death. The characteristic lesion of ileitis at necropsy is marked thickening of the last section of the small intestine. The inner lining of the thickened intestine proliferates almost like a cancer and curved rod bacteria(L intracellularis) are always seen inside the intestinal wall. Infected swine shed the organism in the feces. Isolation and growth of pure L intracellularis in vitro requires a suitable cell culture. This procedure is difficult and not a practical means of diagnosis, thus the polymerase chain reaction(PCR) test of feces can be used to determine whether a pig is shedding the infective organism. A sensitive assay based on amplification of a 319bp DffA fragment of the L intracellularis of Swine proliferative enteritis was attempted for the detection of the organism in the 62 feces of swine. L intracellularis was identified on three herds and detected in 6 fecal samples, representing a infection rate of 9.7%. The PCR was very sensitive and specific on the individual level. The PCR technique could be very useful for the diagnosis of this disease.

  • The disease syndrome characterized by the acute vomiting and diarrhea with high mortality had been greatly epidemic in Korea since June, 1931 and it was followed serologically and electron microscopically for the clarification of the agent. The agent present in feces of dogs associated with this syndrome had characteristic feature in agglutinating pig red blood cells that was specifically inhibited by anti-CPV reference dog serum. This also showed the serological identity with the reference CPV antigen in immuno-diffusion. Electron micrograph of the material revealed parvovirus particles with size of 20nm and icosahedral structure. These results clearly indicated that CPV was the primary cause of canine epidemic prevailing in 1981 in Korea.

  • 1. Objectives This study was to investigate correlation between the diagnosis of Sasang Constitutional Medicine(SCM) and the differentiation of syndromes according to the state of Qi, Blood, Body Fluid, Phlegm retention and the five viscera in storke inpatients. 2. Methods Stroke inpatients were investigated through questionaire of differentiation of syndromes and QSCC2. The results were analyzed statistically by one-way ANOVA on SPSS 12. 3. Results and Conclusions 1) Soeumin had a high grade on Qi-insufficiency than other consititutions. 2) Soyangin had a low grade on Qi-insufficiency, spleen disease than other consititutions. 3) There were not significant results in the investigation item of the sweating, constipation, diarrhea, anorexia, abdominal pain among the constitutions.

  • We came to the conclusion after considering all of information from many kinds of books on the Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor. The result were as follows: 1. Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor is originated from the bufonidae of caudata of amphibia of chordata. 2. The form of Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor is obese, about 12 centimeter long and the color of Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor is dark brown, black. 3. The charateristics and the tastes of Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor is cold and spicy and the Guigyung of Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor is heart and stomach. 4. The significant gredient of Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor is Bufagin, Steroids, Cinobufotoxin, ${\beta}$-sitosterol, Bufothionine, Bufotenidine, Bufo tenine, Bufalin, Butotalidin Hellebrigenin, Bufochrome. 5. The efficacy of Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor is pajinggyunhyul(破懲堅血), salgamjok(殺疳積), taehuyol(退虛熱), etc. 6. In direction of Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor, one time dosage is 2-3 gram in internal medicine, in external medicine dosage depends on the width. 7. Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor should be cautious in use those who is pregnant, have heart disease, gastritis, gastric ulcer. 8. The side effect of Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor is nausea, vomiting, abdomen discomfort, diarrhea, palpitation, headache, lethargy, etc. 9. Bufobufo gargarizans Cantor could be use in hepatoma, esophgeal cancer, stomach cancer, skin cancer, breast cancer and leukemia.

Riemerella anatipestifer infection in domestic ducks (육용오리에서 Riemerella anatipestifer 감염증례)

  • Riemerellosis, contagious disease of domestic ducks in Korea, occurred in December of 2007 in a farm located in Eumsung, Chungbuk province. The affected ducks were 22 days old and the owner reported that almost one hundred of ducks had died everyday for a few days after infection. Clinical signs were listlessness, ocular and nasal discharge, greenish diarrhea, ataxia, tremor of head and legs, and coma. On necropsy we found fibrinous exudate, which involved serosal surfaces in general, but most evidences were in the pericardial cavity and over the surface of the liver. The causative agent was isolated from the liver of the affected ducks and identified as Riemerella anatipestifer using biochemical tests. Also, the isolate was susceptible to ampicillin, cephalothin, sulfamethazole/trimethoprim, Florfenicol among the 23 species antibiotics (AST Discs, OXOID) used in our laboratory. Further studies should be needed for the more effective control and better epidemiological information such as pathogenicity, serotype, genotype and treatment.

Ganglioneuroblastoma with WDHA Syndrome (WDHA증후군을 동반한 신경절모세포종)

  • The WDHA syndrome characterized by watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and achlorhydria (WDHA syndrome) is rare, and with neurogenic tumors. A 20-month-old girl presenting with symptoms of WDHA syndrome was transferred to our hospital. She had a ganglioneuroblastoma of the adrenal gland. The serum level of VIP was elevated. After complete excision of the tumor, all symptoms related to the WDHA syndrome were relieved and serum VIP level dropped to normal. The postoperative course was uneventful. The patient was treated with postoperative chemotherapy and radiation therapy. There was no evidence of disease 33 months after operation.

Immunofluorescence Microscopic Evaluation of Tight Junctional Proteins during Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) Infection in Mice

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing in prevalence in developed countries but the cause of this increase is unclear. In animal models of IBD and in human IBD patients, alterations in the tight junctional proteins have been observed, suggesting that the intestinal microflora may penetrate the underlying colonic tissue and promote inflammation. Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) causes inflammatory diarrhea in human and is implicated in inflammatory bowel diseases. However, it is unclear whether alterations in tight junctional proteins occur during ETBF infection in mice. In this brief communication, we report that ETBF infection induces up-regulation of claudin-2 and down-regulation of claudin-5 through B. fragilis toxin (BFT) activity in the large intestine of C57BL/6 mice. In contrast, BFT did not induce changes in tight junctional proteins in the HT29/C1 cell line, suggesting that analysis of biological activity of BFT in vivo is important for evaluating ETBF effects.
