What's happening to theatricality after the rise of New Historicism?: A Study of Newsbooks and Playlets During the English Civil Wars and Their Significance as Textual and Theatrical Forms (신역사주의적 극장성의 재고(再考) -17세기 중반 뉴스북과 플레이릿 연구를 중심으로)

  • Since the publication of Foucault's Discipline and Punish, theatricality has become one of the key concepts in New Historicism. By defining theatricality as the most definitive feature of early modern society and culture, New Historicists have promoted the idea that theatrical practices in every day life were eventually replaced by textual practices as the western society started to undergo modernization with the advent of print culture and technologies. This paper questions this linear model of English literature, the shift of literary practices from theatricality to textuality in the event of modernization, by closely looking at the ways in which newsbooks and playlets during the English civil wars appealed to their target readers. The early print-based literary commodities during the English civil war (i.e. newsbooks and playlets) were able to win the attention of their audience not by breaking away from theatrical energy and creativity but instead by embracing and taking advantage of them through the use of dramatic conventions, dialogues, and many others. The newsbooks and the playlets during the time, however, did not simply replicate the dramatic forms and experiences of the previous generation. Instead, as the case study of Craftie Cromwell exemplifies, they went further to produce a different mode of theatricality by reshaping everyday lives into serialized drama, whose resolution is always already delayed and postponed into the ever-receding future. In conclusion, the study of the newsbook and playlets during the civil wars suggests that the textuality of modern times, materialized in print forms, have been co-evolved with the development of new theatricality, whose contents and forms are susceptible to the changes of everyday reality.

Cure and Ethics Implied in Trauma Literature: Don DeLillo's Falling Man and Joy Kogawa's Obasan (외상문학에 함축된 치유와 윤리 -돈 드릴로의 『추락하는 남자』와 조이 코가와의 『오바상』 병치 연구)

  • Don DeLillo has shown considerable interest in terror, frequently depicting extreme dread of something terrible to happen, in his literary texts. Since more than three thousand innocent people in New York were killed by the 9-11 terrorist attack in 2001, the anticipation about what kind of fiction he would write as a New Yorker was high. DeLillo's novel Falling Man (2007) in fragmentary detail represents the scene of the terrorism from the perspective of Keith Neudecker, a lawyer who escapes the collapsing world trader center. Neudecker's post-traumatic stress disorder in the first chapter is followed by the free-associative portrayal of various impacts of the 9-11 terror on Neudecker's wife Lienne in the second chapter. The random mixture of the first person narratives from such diverse view-point characters as Neudecker's son Justin, relatives and friends, with dialogues and recollections yields a very close picture of the consequences of terrorism. Reading DeLillo's Falling Man in juxtaposition with a Japanese Canadian novel Obasan by Joy Kogawa, reminiscences of the maltreatment of Japanese Canadians during and after the second world war, surfaces the authorial intention of the two novels. They as trauma literature emerge to aim at curing the readers and proposing post-traumatic ethics. Laurie Vickroy's theory of trauma narrative and cure, E. Ann Kaplan's theory of trauma witness narrative and responsibility, and Emmanuel Levinas's theory of trauma memory and ethics offer theoretical grounds for the convincing analysis of the two texts.

A Study on Burnout Aspects and Solutions in Movies: Focusing on and (영화에 나타난 번아웃 양상과 해결방식 연구: <꾸뻬씨의 행복여행>과 <잠깐만 회사 좀 관두고 올게>를 중심으로)

  • 'Burnout', which has been frequently used recently, is one of the representative expressions representing the psychology of modern people living in fierce competition. In this paper, I approached and analyzed two films, 'Hector and the Search for Happiness' and 'To Each His Own' from the perspective of burnout, which are considered two of the most healing movies for office workers. The symptoms of burnout in the work were lethargy, irritability, anger, insomnia, depression, and suicidal thoughts. In the case of 'Hector and the Search for Happiness' the clash of values from repeated consulting work, and in the case of 'To Each His Own', work overload, performance pressure, and the absence of a community of colleagues were the causes. This burnout state is visually expressed through the dialogues and expressions of the characters, as well as looking down shots of various sizes, low lighting, and placing objects in front of the main character. This intuitively expressed the symptoms of burnout, which is difficult to diagnose. In particular, it was confirmed through the movie that one of the diagnostic criteria for burnout, such as hobbies, physical activity, and the presence or absence of a fellow community, helps to get out of burnout.

  • Plato's Laws, Bk. 10 is made up of cryptically concise expressions and complex arguments, so that it is not simple to understand it. In this essay I would like to make use of Stoic perspective as an interpretative instrument, which would enable me, I hope, to reconstruct the main arguments of the Laws, Bk. 10 into an intelligible form. Through this approach we would have an opportunity to meet with some important philosophical ideas of Plato which did not reveal themselves clearly in other, especially early and middle dialogues. These ideas comprise the inseparability of the soul from the body, the intellectualization of nature, the human being as a part of the cosmos and the extensional overlapping of the moral law and the natural law. And at the same time my study would result in making a suggestion for history of reception. That is, in this paper I will find some grounds in the tenth book of the Laws that would show how great the influence of Plato upon the Stoics was. For we have but little knowledge about the possibility of the power of Plato's influence upon the Stoics, even though the scholarship on the Stoics until now shed some light on the features and range of Aristotle's influence upon them.

Summarization of Korean Dialogues through Dialogue Restructuring (대화문 재구조화를 통한 한국어 대화문 요약)

  • After COVID-19, communication through online platforms has increased, leading to an accumulation of massive amounts of conversational text data. With the growing importance of summarizing this text data to extract meaningful information, there has been active research on deep learning-based abstractive summarization. However, conversational data, compared to structured texts like news articles, often contains missing or transformed information, necessitating consideration from multiple perspectives due to its unique characteristics. In particular, vocabulary omissions and unrelated expressions in the conversation can hinder effective summarization. Therefore, in this study, we restructured by considering the characteristics of Korean conversational data, fine-tuning a pre-trained text summarization model based on KoBART, and improved conversation data summary perfomance through a refining operation to remove redundant elements from the summary. By restructuring the sentences based on the order of utterances and extracting a central speaker, we combined methods to restructure the conversation around them. As a result, there was about a 4 point improvement in the Rouge-1 score. This study has demonstrated the significance of our conversation restructuring approach, which considers the characteristics of dialogue, in enhancing Korean conversation summarization performance.

A Study on Giving Verbs 'kureru' and 'kudasaru': by Analyzing Dialogues of Female Speakers in Novels of the Edo Period, Meiji Period and the Taisho Period- (수수동사 'くれる·くださる'에 관한 고찰 - 에도기부터 다이쇼기의 작품속의 여성화자의 사용례를 중심으로-)

  • This study aims to know word forms and usages according to personal relationships of 'Kureru Kudasaru' by analyzing dialogues of female speakers. Novels of the Meiji period when there were attempts of a language revolution were mainly used for this study as well as novels of the Edo Period and the Taisho Period. Firstly, the number of examples according to gender differences in the novels was as follows. In case of 'Kureru', female speakers showed a high usage rate in the novels of the Edo period. 'Kureru' was mostly connected with female languages such as 'Naharu', 'Namasu', 'Nansu'. These expressions were not used in the novels of the Meiji Period and the Taisho Period. Although 'Okureru' and 'Okurenasaru' were used in the novels of the Meiji Period, the number of examples of 'Kureru' by female speakers was decreased in the novels of the Meiji Period and the Taisho Period. 'Kudasaru' was predominantly used by female speakers. Especially, female speakers used clearly to show vertical relationships in the novels of the Edo Period and"Doseishoseikatagi"of Meiji 10s. After"Ukigumo", the usage rate of female speakers was decreased but the usage rate of male speakers was increased. Gender differences became gradually smaller. Female speakers in the novels were increased from geisha and relatives such as wife, sister, mother and children to young women, teacher and student. Aspects of benefactive verbs' usages could be summarized as follows. Female speakers at licensed quarters used clearer and more typical expressions according to vertical relationships and gender differences in the novels of The Edo Period than the novels of The Meiji Period and the Taisho Period. In the novels of the Meiji Period, female speakers in a sophisticated social group used benefactive verbs to show strong respect and concern for the other person. In the novels of the Taisho Period, female speakers used benefactive verbs to show respect and concern for the other person according to their areas of outside activities. In the novels of the Meiji Period, female speakers used 'Okureru' when the other person was younger than them and was socially and psychologically close to them. Also, 'O~Nasaru' which was one of respect expressions was used by female speakers. Female speakers used it to older people in the Edo period but they also used it to younger people in the Meiji Period. Examples were not shown in the novels of the Taisho Period. Usages of 'Kureru' 'Kudasaru' according to vertical relationships were as follows. If 'a giver' was an older person, 'Kureru' with respect expressions 'Nasaru' 'Nansu' 'Namasu' was used more than 'Kudasaru' in the novels of the Edo Period. However, many examples of 'Kudasaru' were shown on the novels of the Meiji Period and the Taisho period. In the novels of the Meiji Period, 'Okureru' and 'Okurenasaru' which were expressions included in 'Kureru' were shown. Female speakers used them to older people who were socially and psychologically close to them like family. There were not many examples of 'a giver' and 'a receiver' around the same age. However, 'Kureru' and 'Okureru' were used in a younger group and 'Kudasaru' was used in an older group in the novels of the Meiji Period. If 'a giver' was an younger person, 'Kureru' was mainly used in the novels of the Edo period and "Doseishoseikatagi"in Meiji 10s. However, 'Kudasaru' was used many times in the novels of the latter Meiji Period and the Taisho Period.

Comparative Analysis on Pronunciation Contents in Korean Integrated Textbooks (한국어 통합 교재에 나타난 발음 내용의 비교 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze phonetic items such as the phonemic system, phonological rules, and pronunciation descriptions and notations incorporated in the textbooks. Based on our analysis results, we point out the problems related to pronunciation education, and suggest directions for improvement. First, the presentation order of consonants and vowels in the phonological systems sections of each textbook was different. We recommend that a standard for consonant and vowel presentation order should be prepared, but that this standard should take into consideration the specific purpose of the textbook; the learning strategies and goals, as well as the possibility of teaching and learning. Second, similar to phonemic systems, the presentation order of phonological rules was different for each textbook. To create a standard order for phonological rules, we have to standardize the order of presentation of rules and determine which rules should be presented. Furthermore, when describing phonological rules, the content should be described in common and essential terms as much as possible without the use of jargon. Third, in other matters of pronunciation, there were problems such as examples for pronunciation and lack of exercises. Regarding this, we propose to provide sentences or dialogues as examples for pronunciation, and to link these to various activities and other language functions for pronunciation practice.

Decision of the Korean Speech Act using Feature Selection Method (자질 선택 기법을 이용한 한국어 화행 결정)

  • Speech act is the speaker's intentions indicated through utterances. It is important for understanding natural language dialogues and generating responses. This paper proposes the method of two stage that increases the performance of the korean speech act decision. The first stage is to select features from the part of speech results in sentence and from the context that uses previous speech acts. We use x$^2$ statistics(CHI) for selecting features that have showed high performance in text categorization. The second stage is to determine speech act with selected features and Neural Network. The proposed method shows the possibility of automatic speech act decision using only POS results, makes good performance by using the higher informative features and speed up by decreasing the number of features. We tested the system using our proposed method in Korean dialogue corpus transcribed from recording in real fields, and this corpus consists of 10,285 utterances and 17 speech acts. We trained it with 8,349 utterances and have test it with 1,936 utterances, obtained the correct speech act for 1,709 utterances(88.3%). This result is about 8% higher accuracy than without selecting features.

VoiceXML Dialog System Based on RSS for Contents Syndication (콘텐츠 배급을 위한 RSS 기반의 VoiceXML 다이얼로그 시스템)

  • This paper suggests prototype of dialog system combining VXML(VoiceXML) that is the W3C's standard XML format for specifying interactive voice dialogues between human and computer, and RSS(RDF Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) that is representative technology of semantic web for syndication and subscription of updated web-contents. Merits of the proposed system are as following: 1) It is a new method that recognize spoken contents using ire and wireless telephone networks and then provide contents to user via STT(Speech-to-Text) and TTS(Text-to-Speech) instead of traditional method using web only. 2) It can apply advantage of RSS that subscription of updated contents is converted to VXML without modifying traditional method to provide RSS service, 3) In terms of users, it can reduce restriction on time-spate in search of contents that is provided by RSS because it uses ire and wireless telephone networks, not internet environment. 4) In terms of information provider, it does not need special component for syndication of the newest contents using speech recognition and synthesis technology. We implemented a news service system using VXML and RSS for performance evaluation of the proposed system. In experiment results, we estimated the response time and the speech recognition rate in subscription and search of actuality contents, and confirmed that the proposed system can provide contents those are provided using RSS Feed.

Research on the Changes of Beginning Science Teachers' Teaching through a Mentoring Program (멘토링 전후의 초임 과학교사의 수업 특징 변화)

  • In this research, we investigated the effect of a mentoring program implemented in science classrooms taught by beginning teachers in order to support their professional development. As a baseline data, we examined the characteristics of beginning science teachers' teaching. Then we explored any changes in mentee teachers' teaching with the implementation of a mentoring program. The three mentor-mentee pairs participated in this study. We explored six teachers' classroom teaching episodes with their videotaped classroom teaching. Using open-ended interviews and group discussions taking place on a regular basis to analyze and compare classes of six teachers, we extracted the beginning teachers' teaching characteristics in light of teaching strategies. The common features of the participated mentee teachers' teaching are analyzed in terms of (1) classroom culture and management, (2) classroom discourse, and (3) science experiments. Through mentoring, mentee teachers recognized that increased and enriched classroom dialogues had an effect on students' content understanding. Mentee teachers also acknowledged not only the necessity of laboratory activities but also the roles and ways of managing the science activities. Ways to help beginning teachers develop instructional professionalism are discussed.
