Purpose. The current study was aimed to investigate the transformational experience of a female student nurse living with type 1 diabetes. Methods. A case study of a 24-year-old diabetes patient was conducted, with interviews concerning the evolving process she had lived through during the period from her later high school years to her graduation from nursing college. Results. Followings were identified as 5-transformation process: With her diabetes-related limitation, the participant experienced 'conflict involving choosing a college and major'. The participant tried to be in charge of managing her diabetes and stepped forward to 'adaptation to college life as a new environment', and she learned more about the process of 'evolving awareness of caring' and developed herself further through the process of 'integration of the nurse identity into self-identity', and finally through the process of 'progression and preparation for getting a job' she achieved her goals, being positive about the future. Conclusions. The results of the study can provide individuals with diabetes a way of self-management and help the patients and their families in diabetes education. Further research will be needed to refine the results of this study and to learn more about the experiences of patients with type I diabetes in college years.
This study was intended to provide basic data for developing an oral health management program for diabetic patients by understanding their oral health condition and defining the influence of diabetes on oral health. The following results were obtained through intraoral examination and questionnaire surveys done on one hundred and twenty two diabetic outpatients who visited endocrine department at Yeungnam University in Daegu and internal medicine department at Chungmu hospital in Cheonahn for 4 months from November, 2005 to February, 2006. DMF index according to the gender was significantly higher in females only in Filling index (p <0.05). Missing index increased as the age increased (p <0.001). Papillary bleeding index was significantly higher in females (p <0.05). Several indices which show oral status significantly higher as the duration of diabetes increased and as the blood sugar level before meal was higher (p <0.01, p <0.05). In a group that received oral hygiene education, several indices which show periodontal status were significantly lower than those in a group that didn't have it (p <0.001). According to the results, not only diabetic control but also general oral care should be included in self-management education for diabetic patients and this should be accomplished by appropriate oral health education program and staffs.

This study was conducted to identify the level of diabetes self-care knowledge, confidence, behavior and quality of life in elderly people with diabetes. The participants were 205 elderly with diabetes who visited a citizen health center located in D city. Korea. The data were collected from April, 20th to August 31th, 2015, and were analyzed by the t-test and ANOVA. The results were as follows; 1) The mean scores for diabetes self-care knowledge, confidence, behavior, and quality of life were 6.99 (2.17), 71.27 (10.21), 62.78 (1.29) and 0.86, respectively. 2) There were significant differences in the self-care behavior according to the education level, duration of diabetes mellitus and subjective health, and the quality of life differeddepending on the level of subjective health(F=35.253, p=0.000). 3) Knowledge of diabetes diet was the lowest among the various aspects of diabetes self-care knowledge. Confidence for exercise was lowest, while confidence for medication and blood sugar check was highest. However, the participants exhibited good medication behavior, whereasthey did not carry out blood glucose checks in their self-care management behavior. The most uncomfortable aspect of the quality of life was found to be pain and discomfort. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop guidelines and methods for dietary education reflecting the dietary habits of Koreans, and to investigatethe reasonsfor thelow performance of theblood glucose check. In addition, customized nursing interventionstaking into consideration the characteristics of elderly with diabetes need to be developed and verified.
This research was a review and analysis of published articles and theses in Korea on Intervention Programs for patients with Diabetes Mellitus. A comprehensive search of databases was undertaken(Korean studies, Riss4u). using research terms such as"diabetes", "diabetes and education" "diabetes and exercise", "diabetes and intervention", "diabetes and education or exercise." 53 studies were analyzed focusing on type, application method, dependant variable and effect using descriptive statistics. 8 intervention type and 113 dependant variables were used. The most frequently used applied education and counseling and glycometabolism, self-care, self-efficacy the most frequently used dependant variable. The effects of dependant variables no effect or were different effects. Further reserarch in the digital convergence should requires the consideration of Structured content and exercise and the effect of the measurement variables, including the psychological variable effect.

Purpose: This study was a descriptive survey research to identify whether characteristics of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, their knowledge about diabetes, and self-care behavior impacted on the level of diabetic retinopathy. Methods: Participants were 133 patients who had type 2 diabetes mellitus and were being seen at a hospital in Korea. The scale for knowledge about diabetes had 24 items, the scale for self-care behavior, 20 items, and the level of diabetic retinopathy was classified according to the international clinical diabetic retinopathy severity measurement standards. Results: The influence of the independent variables on the level of diabetic retinopathy showed that age, job, time since onset of Diabetes Mellitus, regular ophthalmologic examinations, and systolic blood pressure were identified as factors affecting the level of diabetic retinopathy. The explanation power of this regression model was 23.0% and it was statistically significant (F=5.42, p<.001). Conclusion: Early education about occurrence of diabetes related diseases, specifically diabetic retinopathy should be provided for patients from younger ages. Moreover, for disease management, social support is needed from co-workers and friends. Efforts to encouraged prevention and delay of diabetic retinopathy should include control of blood sugar and blood pressure.

This study was carried out to identify the perceived educational needs of diabetes mellitus type 2(DM 2) patients and the factors influencing their diabetes educational needs. The descriptive and correlation study design was used. The data was collected from January 2, 2012 to February 29 10, 2012 and a total of 346 diabetes patients responded in a structured instrument regarding their characteristics, diabetes knowledge and needs for diabetes education. The data was analyzed using ANOVA, t-test, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. The mean score of the diabetes educational needs was 3.03 (range: 1.09-4.00). Of the factors significantly influencing the diabetes educational needs, age (${\beta}$=-.25, p<.001), diabetes education participation of the family (${\beta}$=.21, p=.003), and self blood sugar test (${\beta}$=-.13, p=.045) explained the 11% variance of the diabetes educational needs. These three factors need to be considered when implementing diabetes education programs for diabetes management.

Nutrition is important in the management of diabetes mellitus, however, there are few little education materials specifically designed for older adults. The objective of this study was to develop nutrition education materials for prevention and management of diabetes moll for older adults. Materials developed were a booklet and four leaflets. The contents of materials were based on lesson plans. After several revisions of the draft of materials, illustrations and icons appropriate to the contents were designed using illustrator 9.0 and Photoshop 6.0. The booklet was composed of five chapters and 40 pages. The first chapter began with an introduction about diabetes and diabetes management by diet, exercise and medication. The second chapter dealt with ideal body weight, calculation of adequate caloric intake and food exchange list. The third chapter provided information for meal planning and sample menus. The fourth chapter focused on practical tips on nutritional care of diabetes, by providing tips on reducing sugars, fat and salt, and suggestions on eating for special occasions. The fifth chapter dealt with information in case of low blood sugars, exercise and foot care. The topics of the four leaflets were “Diabetes, what is it and care”, “Food exchange list and meal planning”, “Healthy eating for diabetes”, “Special care for diabetes low blood sugars, exercise and foot care” Each leaflet was composed of six sections and was printed in large paper (B4 size) for older adults. The draft of educational materials were re-viewed by four nutrition professionals and finally pilot-tested with ten adults aged 50 and older. The characteristics of the developed materials are as follows, i) messages are delivered using simple, specific information, ⅱ) messages focused on practical applicable tips, ⅲ) various pictures, illustrations and artwork were created and inserted to enhance understanding and interest, ⅳ) sections including risk factor assessment, calculation of ideal body weight and meal planning were designed to induce the user's participation, ⅴ) sample menus and food pictures were inserted in the booklet, vi) characteristics of older adults and transformed characteristics are diversely used to help the user feel familiarity. These materials are self-explanatory and can be used by older adults. These materials also can be used widely in nutrition education at public health centers or senior centers.

Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the healthcare experience of residents participating in the Community-Based Hypertension and Diabetes Registry Program. Methods: This study used qualitative content analysis. Data were collected from in depth interviews of fifteen participants, who either participated in the program hosted by the Training Center for Hypertension and Diabetes for more than two years or participated in an intensive one-on-one education program. Results: The results showed that the core theme in healthcare of participants was 'Proactive healthcare with attention and systematic guidance of experts'. The positive reinforcement of staffs and the improvement of self-efficacy through effective close management were found to be positive influencing factors of participation. The theme consisted of the following categories: 'Participation in the program with positive expectations on healthcare', 'Interest in body and health', 'Vitality in life', 'Confidence in dealing with disease', 'Thankfulness for close care and attention', and 'Desire for continuous care'. Conclusion: When establishing policies on managing chronic diseases, a strategy that reflects the results of the study is required. It is necessary to build up emotional relationship among stakeholders, and expand opportunities for close healthcare such as one-on-one customized training, and mutual cooperation with various organizations in the local community.

Purpose: This study aimed to estimate the effects of a health mentoring program on fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, triglyceride, physical activity, self care behavior and social support changes among community-dwelling vulnerable elderly individuals with diabetes. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pre-post-test design was used. Participants were 70 community-dwelling vulnerable elderly individuals with diabetes. They were assigned to the experimental (n=30) or comparative (n=30) or control group (n=28). The experimental group participated in the health mentoring program, while the comparative group participated in health education program, the control group did not participate in any program. Data analyses involved a chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, a generalized linear model, and the Bonferroni correction, using SPSS 23.0. Results: Compared to the control group, the experimental and comparative groups showed a significant decrease in fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, and triglyceride. Compared to the comparative and control groups, the experimental group showed significant improvement in self care behavior. However, there were no statistical differences in physical activity or social support among the three groups. Conclusion: These findings indicate that the health mentoring program is an effective intervention for community-dwelling vulnerable elderly individuals with diabetes. This program can be used as an efficient strategy for diabetes self-management within this population.
Purpose: Diabetic foot ulcers are significant problems in diabetes mellitus and often result in lower extremity amputation. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a self-care management program on Korean patient's self-efficacy, self-care behavior, size of the wound, and wound related pain. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study of pre-test and post-test design in a non-equivalent control group. The intervention strategies of the self-care management program consisted of individual intervention (education, practice and demonstration), computer animation, and face-to-face counseling. There were thirty seven patients, and 20 were assigned to the experimental group while the other 17 were assigned to the control group. The experimental group was given a self-care management program. The control group received information on diabetic mellitus care by means of a leaflet. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, a chi-square test, an independent t-test, and a Mann-Whitney test. Results: There were significant differences in self-care behavior and wound related pain. Conclusion: A Self-care program is an effective way to increase patient's self-care ability. This program is highly applicable to diabetic foot ulcer patients in various settings.
