An Analysis of Similarities that Students Construct in the Process of Problem Solving (중학생들이 수학 문장제 해결 과정에서 구성하는 유사성 분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate students' constructing similarities in the understanding the problem phase and the devising a plan phase of problem solving. the relation between similarities that students construct and how students construct similarities is researched through case study. Based on the results from the research, authors reached a conclusion as following. All of two students constructed surface similarities in the beginning of the problem solving process and responded to the context of the problem information sensitively. Specially student who constructed the similarities and the difference in terms of a specific dimension by using diagram for herself could translate the equation which used to solve the base problem or the experienced problem into the equation of the target problem solution. However student who understood globally the target problem being based on the surface similarity could not translate the equation that she used to solve the base problem into the equation of target problem solution.

  • As buildings nowadays become taller in height and larger in size the safety review of lifting plan takes larger portion in construction project management. However, the cost and safety in lifting plan have a contradictory effect on each other. Therefore, an optimization algorithm needs devising as a solution of the contradictory problem. In many cases at construction sites, selections and stability review of tower cranes are assigned to equipment suppliers or field managers, which cause the problems in safety and cost of the projects. To improve the part of the current situation, a study on the optimization algorithm for designing the foundation of tower cranes is conducted in this study, which can be utilized by equipment suppliers or field managers to check the stability of tower cranes easily and promptly without substantial knowledge.

A Study on the GSP in the Viewpoint of Problem Solving ('문제해결' 관점에서의 GSP활용)

  • In this study, we studied some examples using GSP(Geometer's SketchPad) in the process of problem solving that is explained by G. polya. After reconsidering examples, we tried to show that using GSP can help student's intuitive thinking, investigative activities, reflective thinking. Especially, in the three phase of problem solving(understanding the problem, devising a plan, looking back), mathematics teachers may using GSP in order to helping student's understanding. Besides, we tried to suggest the direction to use GSP more adequately in the teaching and Beaming mathematics. First of all, Mathematics teachers using GSP in their class must have ideas how to use it. And they have to be careful on the didactical transposition of mathematical knowledge in the computer-based learning. They also have to lead students move from activities with GSP materials to carrying out the problem solving plan and reflection activities.

  • During the past 20 years, a small but potentially powerful initiative has established itself in the mathematics education landscape: Mathematics Across the Curriculum (MAC). This curricular reform movement was designed to address a serious problem: Not only are students unable to demonstrate understanding of mathematical ideas and their applications, but also they harbor misconceptions about the meaning and purpose of mathematics. This paper chronicles the brief history of the MaC movement. The sections of the paper correspond loosely tn the typical steps one might take to solve a mathematics problem. The Problem Takes Shape presents a discussion of the social and economic forces that led to the need for increased articulation between mathematics and other fields in the American educational system. Understanding the Problem presents the potential value of exploiting these connections throughout the curriculum and the obstacles such action might encounter. Devising a Plan provides an overview of the support systems provided to early MAC initiatives by government and professional organizations. Implementing the Plan contains a brief description of early collegiate programs, their approaches and their differences. Extending the Solution details the adoption of MAC principles to the K-12 sector and throughout the world. The paper concludes with Retrospective, a brief discussion of lessons learned and possible next steps.

A Study on Vitalizing a Project for Building a Disaster Resistant Community to Enhance Local Disaster Prevention (지역방재력 향상을 위한 방재마을 만들기 활성화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The following improvement plans are suggested in this study to facilitate implementing a pilot project for building a disaster resistant community organized by the National Emergency Management Agency in 2008, and ultimately to expand the project nation-wide. Regarding legislative aspects, legal grounds should be established such as devising a new clause in the Counter Measure for Natural Disaster for assigning a disaster resistant community or city, and devising a tentatively named "Act for Disaster Resistant Community Project" as a local governance regulation. Regarding administrative aspects, a project master plan focused on active participation of the local residents should be designed. Moreover, a certain amount of the project budget should be alloted not only to structural contents but also to non-structural contents. Regarding organizational aspects, an education program for training local disaster prevention leaders should be actively promoted and a local disaster prevention governance system should also be established among official and inofficial local organizations. Furthermore a preemptive consulting system with disaster prevention experts as well as an evaluation system to monitor the project implementation process should be introduced.

  • Since 1980s, the government has established the overall country development master plan for balance development of country, it set basic aim of restraint overcrowding of the metropolitan area and devising a regional balance development for development policy. But, new urban development master plan which if propelled has revised development master plan for stabilization of housing cost through supply housing in the metropolitan area, not reviewed discussion suitability of development plan with policy propulsion, efficient pre-plan, negotiation with local self-administration community, convergence opinion of local resident, environmental impact evaluation. therefore, we should suggest considerations related to policy and development when it propelled solution of housing inefficience in the metropolitan area and new urban development policy for harmony of central function in capital.

A Study on the Flight Service Network for Incheon International Airport to be a Successful Hub Airport in Northeast Asia (인천국제공항의 허브 경쟁력 강화를 위한 효율적 비행편 서비스망 구성방법에 관한 연구)

  • Incheon International Airport(IIA) is planned to open in about two years. Korean government has an ambition to make IIA a major hub airport in Northeast Asia. The most essential and required condition for an airport to be a successful hub airport in a certain region is to have more efficient flight service network than the other airports in the same region. IIA should compete with Japanese airports to be a major hub in Northeast Asia because Japanese government also has a plan to expand greatly the airport capacity in Tokyo area and Kansai airport in Osaka. It is necessary for both IIA and Korean national air carriers to compose efficient flight service network considering hub competition with Japanese major airports. As the liberalization of international air transport industry would give more marketing freedom to airlines, they would plan the flight service network and flight schedule based on market analysis instead of governmental regulations. In the economically liberalized environment, it is very required to analyze air passengers' flight choice behaviour in order to induce other carriers and passengers through IIA's attractive flight service network. Disaggregate model is more appropriate than aggregate model to analyze consumers' behaviour. The information derived from disaggregate choice model of air passengers could be utilized in devising efficient flight network and schedule plan. Value of travel time or trade off ratio between flight frequency and travel time which could be estimated from discrete choice model could be utilized for scheduling an efficient flight plan for airlines and composing efficient flight service network for IIA.

Temporomandibular Joint False Ankylosis in a Cat: A Case Report

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is a rare disease impairing mandible movement and can either be intra-articular (true) or extra-articular (false). A cat presented with an inability to open its mouth, drooling, and facial asymmetry. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed an extracapsular abnormal TMJ fusion, and a surgical plan was devised based on the CT imaging. Post-surgery, the cat regained mouth mobility (indicating false ankylosis) and showed an improved prognosis. This case of CT-diagnosed and treated feline TMJ false ankylosis underscores the indispensable role of CT in diagnosing and devising surgical strategies for feline TMJ false ankylosis.

  • One of the most important problems in the estimation of the parameter of the failure model, is the cost of experimental sampling units, which can be reduced by using any prior information available about ${\theta}$, and devising a two-stage pooling shrunken estimation procedure. We have proposed an estimator of the reliability function (R(t)) of the exponential model using two-stage time censored data when a prior value about the unknown parameter (${\theta}$) is available from the past. To compare the performance of the proposed estimator with the classical estimator, computer intensive calculations for bias, mean squared error, relative efficiency, expected sample size and percentage of the overall sample size saved expressions, were done for varying the constants involved in the proposed estimator (${\tilde{R}}$(t)).

  • A process planning system that generates alternative process plans offers multiple process plans for a part, thereby provides the flexibility to cope with the changes in shop floor status. In this paper, we intro- duce the concept of process net as a model for the generation of alternative process plans. We also show the usefulness of process net model in generating alternative process plans by implementing the developed sys- tem to construct process net, and devising an algorithm to generate alternative process plans for rotational parts.
