  • Lumbar discs are one of the first parts of the musculoskeletal system to age in the human body. Lumbar disc for females start to age at twenty years of age and completely age between fifty and sixty. The number of lumbar herniated intervertebral disc patients are increasing rapidly; however, studies on protective inner wear are insufficient. This study was conducted to develop protective inner wear equipment that retains an aesthetic appreciation of the body. The methods and procedures of this study are as follows. First, foreign and domestic lumbar pads were researched and analyzed by visiting medical shops and internet shopping malls that sell lumbar pads. Second, the survey was conducted on forty patients with disc disease in hospitals located in Seoul and surrounding suburbs. The following are the study results and observations. First, the lumbar pads selling on the market had a variety of designs, textiles, and fabrics. The result of the research was to develop additional inner protective equipment for lumbar herniated intervertebral disc patients. Second, the survey results of the forty patients with disc disease were that housewives were the most vulnerable. All patients had experience purchasing lumbar pads. The prevention of pain and stress were the most selected responses for the motivation to buy lumbar pads. Most individuals said that they used lumbar pads for less than 1 year. Dissatisfaction came from fabric, activity and design. 'Being uncomfortable to wear' was the most common complaint. 'Protection and how easy the clothes were to wear' were the most selected for the necessity of developments. The Inner wear shape was the most selected in shape. Except for six respondents, all favored the lumbar protective inner wear design.

Expressive characteristics of genderless style appeared in contemporary women's fashion (현대 여성 컬렉션에 나타난 젠더리스 스타일의 표현특성)

  • This study aimed to contribute to the development of various female fashion designs by reviewing the genderless styles in androgynous trends that have loomed large in women's fashion, as well as through analyzing and organizing the changes in women's fashion that were required in a society in which various values coexist. A literature review was conducted to identify the genderless concepts, through which a total of 1,273 materials were selected from 10 brands of the S/S collections, during the period of 2006~2016. The results were as follows: first, without the juxtaposition of incongruous objects or images and a fixed type of color arrangements, the compromise shown in women's fashion were mostly expressed through various tones and diverse colors, and with the mixed use of heterogeneous patterns and materials. Second, the enjoyment of genderless styles was expressed with the unexpectedness that occur through symmetry/asymmetry and harmony/disharmony, as well as through the deviation from conventional notions regarding clothing structures. Third, the exaggeration expressed in women's clothing collections perfectly covered up a woman's body shape with the silhouette of exorbitantly expanded bulk and dimensions. These were done with extended lengths, expanded adornments, and modified clothing design types or structures. Fourth, the sensuality of genderless styles analyzed in women's fashion was expressed with mannish clothing that accentuates the beauty of the female body. Lastly, the historicity shown in genderless styles was expressed through clothing that represented traditional styles of the past, the symbolic meanings expressed in the clothes' colors and patterns, and the methods in which the decorative factors were utilized.

A Study on the Activation Method of Wearing Hanbok (20대 남녀의 한복 착용 활성화 방안에 대한 연구)

  • This paper identified the values and awareness of Koreans in 20s regarding Hanbok, the traditional clothing of Korea, and proposed an approach to promote the traditional clothing culture. The subject of the survey were male and female Koreans in their 20s who wear modern street clothes in places people frequently visit including in the metropolitan area and Chungcheong-do as well as those who wear Hanbok in Seoul and Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do. In accordance with the analysis of the survey, Koreans in their 20s rented Hanok rather than buying it. The respondents wore Hanbok for events, festivals or national holidays or while travelling. Elements to improve in Hanbok rental services were designs, materials, washing and stains. The decision factors for renting Hanbok were 'personal tendency' and 'advice from an expert.' While Koreans in their 20s had a positive awareness of Hanbok, they thought it was difficult to buy, rent and put on Hanbok and that it was not comfortable to wear. There was not sufficient opportunity and means to wear Hanbok due to insufficient accessories or shoes to match. On the basis of the analysis of the survey results, the following approach was proposed for the development of the traditional clothing culture. First of all, develop traditional clothing designers who can satisfy the personalities of Koreans in their 20s. It is necessary to develop experience-focused and participatory programs that provide systematic education regarding traditional clothing to pass down this tradition. In addition, it is necessary to create a social and cultural atmosphere that enables the Koreans in their 20s to easily wear Hanbok by popularizing Hanbok.

  • This study is intended to offer basic data for developing outdoor clothing exported to China by identifying how Chinese consumers use outdoor clothing. To accomplish the objective, a survey was conducted on 300 male and female Chinese tourists in their 10s to 40s who have purchased outdoor clothing before. As more than twice as many respondents said they wear sweatsuit or everyday clothes for mountain-climbing instead of outdoor clothing, the necessity of outdoor clothing is obviously perceived at a low level. Among them, 57.4% wear outdoor clothing as townwear in everyday lives, and other respondents are dissatisfied with the design. Thus, it is necessary to develop townwear-style design. When buying outdoor clothing, wearability was the biggest consideration. Also, the first criteria for evaluating outdoor clothing was practicality for mountain-climbing activities. The functionality of outdoor clothing they needed the most was air permeability. As for outdoor clothing top, the main inconvenience was tightness around the neck. As for bottoms, it was tightness of pants when bending knees. In terms of areas to be improved, the No. 1 was unformed design. Thus, it is imperative to develop design of diverse styles. As the Chinese outdoor clothing market has grown significantly in recent years, the following should be executed by domestic companies before advancing to the market. First, they should form Korean brand image and boost the brand awareness with various activities, amid Korean Wave. Second, they should develop preferred designs among Chinese consumers and strengthen functionality of products, based on consumer survey.

  • This study aims at measuring and comparing the joint range of motion(ROM) of the elderly, quantitatively understanding the joint ROM and duration for their dressing and undressing of pants with 3D motion analysis equipment, and thereby providing basic data necessary for the future development of clothes carrying functional designs. The findings are as follows. As for the study method, the 9-item joint ROM measurements were conducted with goniometer, and the questionnaire analyses were carried out for t-test, ANOVA, and regression analysis with spss12.0 program. The 3D motion analyses were handled with 3D Motion Analysis Package Version 3.1 Program. The findings are as follows. First, the ROM was shown to be significantly low, as the arthritis-pain consciousness level was felt higher by the subject than the average one. Seven ROM variables, such as hip flexion, hip adduction, hip internal rotation, hip external rotation, knee flexion, ankle dorsiflexion, and ankle plantar flexion, were shown to significantly affect the discomfort level experienced at the time of dressing or undressing. Second, in the motion of inserting the remaining leg into the pant crotch part(3e), the difference of angles in the hip joint and knee joint was the largest between the women in their 20s and the elderly women with arthritis. Development of upcycle fashion design using Picasso's works and deconstructivism (피카소 작품과 해체주의 특성을 활용한 업사이클 패션디자인 개발)

  • This study aims to merge Picasso's expressive elements and deconstructive fashion's formative traits, proposing an upcycle fashion design that fuses artistic and philoso-phical aspects. The analysis of Picasso's Cubism identified qualities like liberating revolution, fluidity of vision, geometric reducibility, complex symbolism, and creative imitation. The analysis of Derrida's deconstructionism revealed expressive traits: uncertainty, intertextuality, différance, and dis-de phenomenon. An upscale fashion design was developed based on six Picasso works featuring women. The design was created using the fashion design software CLO 3D and integrated clothing waste and scrap fabrics as materials.The results are as follows. First, upcycle fashion was viewed from a new perspective based on Picasso and Derrida's values. This perspective suggested creating better ethical values by upholding environmental protection in novel ways that overcome limitations rather than destroy existing values indiscriminately. Second, upcycle fashion design methodologies were derived from various perspectives utilizing formative features of Picasso's works and specific expressive features of deconstructed fashion. Third, the direction of mitigating waste and pollution from clothing production and transportation was revealed by making clothes in a virtual space using the CLO 3D program. This study contributed to obtaining various methods for developing upcycle fashion designs using own methods of Picasso and Derrida to diversify the approaches of upcycling, which is relatively stagnant in disassembling.

  • This article is an attempt to explain, at least in part, the contemporary Korean women's consciousness of Western Dreasses. As time changes, the role of clothing undergoes varisous transitions, while values and ways of life are constantly in change. It is, therefore, proper and appropriate to recognize as among the major aspects of social psychology such phenomenon as interests, understanding of clothing, the choice of a dress, and attitudes toward clothing, etc. The purpose of this study is to discover problems concerning and their clothing and their solutions, by means of a surveying approach. The method of research used is based upon questionares distributed to parents of first-year pupils in elementary schools and to female clerks working in offices, covering the period from August through October, 1976. The number of the questionares distrubuted totalled 600, and 526 were returned to the research to be utilized for analysis. The contents of the survey included such things as values concerning clothing, kinds of clothing and their practical use, the selection of clothing and the method of purchase, fashions, etc. The classification of aquisition are self-made clothing, clothing made to order and ready-made materials. It is composed of 25 items, including affirmative reasons as well as negative ones. The processing of the material returned was made by using the computer, and based upon classifications such as ages, monthly income, occupations; thus diagraming the result in percentages. The conclusion made and the improvements proposed are as follows: 1. The values of clothing were placed on the expression of the wearer's personality (32.7) and on eauty(28. 6%). The lower age group places is stress upon the expression of personality, while the higher age group stresses beauty. About 50% of wearers are contented with their clothing, their clothing, the rest of whom them indicating their dissatisfaction with what they wear. As to designs at the time of selection, about 46% indicated their preference of personal expression, 31.8% on usefulness. In selecting material, practicality is emphasized; in selecting patterns, single color is preferred. In short, personal expression and esthetic values are primary, with consideration of practicality in mind. 2. The classification of clothing according to their uses indicates the highest numbers in normal wear (home wears) and clothings to be worn outside home. As to evening dresses, (party dress) only one or two articles were checked by many, and no such article was clamed to be possessed by most. The highest ratio of wearing was shown in the case of home wear (47.3%) and clothing to be worn outside the home, which is 55.8%. The budget for one article of clothing was greatest in the case of home wear, and clothing worn outside the home. Many used both kinds of articles for the same purpose. It is desirable, therefore, that the kinds of clothing should be varied according to the purpose for which they are worn, and that clothing appropriate for that purpose should be worn. 3. The motivation for purchasing clothing was highly chosen in the item of seasonal change, which was 55.7%; Clothing deliberately made was indicated by 45.2%. In the mothods of purchasing clothing, clothing made to order and ready-made was indicated by 44.4%, which is the highest; Clothing made to order was 25.4%, and self-sewing was 1.1%, which is the lowest. (1) In the case of self-sewing, "I like it but it is very hard," was checked by 43.6%; "It is so difficult that I cannot wear such clothing" was checked by 13.3%. From these, we can conclude that the questionees are willing to make clothing by themselves, but techniques involved in sewing and at her problems involved in the skill are complicated but when those problems are eliminated there is a possibility for practice. The response checked by questionees concerning the self-sewing was, "It's economical", which is a clear indication that many questionees are positive for self-sewing. It is generally believed that ready-made clothing is cheaper, but it is not necessarily so. In consideration of the quality of clothing, self-sewing is a necessity, and it is desirable that it should be encouraged. (3) Problems involved in ready-made clothing, such as designs, skills, size (fitting) should be eliminated. When these problems are scientifically gotten rid of, it is possible that affirmative returns will be expected. Affirmative responses such as "Ready-made clothing is economical," "You can select there on the spot," are good signs that many women expect to wear ready-made clothing. It is in this sense that the prospect for ready-made clothing is brighter when much development for ready-made clothing is on the way. 4. Much concern for fashion are checked in such item of questions as "Fashionable clothing in the show window," "Clothes worn by women." The first item was checked by 50.1 %, and the second was checked by 48.6%. The reason for following fashion is "Because many people wear them," which was indicated by 30.4%. The reason for not following fashion is "It is too expensive," which was checked by 29.6%. The 26.2% of the answers indicated that "Fashionable clothing is devoid of personality," The influences of fashion over the development of fashion over the development of clothing are two-fold: Esthetic and active. The Historical Survey on Knitted Works - On the Basic of the Traditional Knitting Patterns of Europe - (편물의 역사적 고찰 -유럽의 편물 전통문양을 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigates the characteristics of European knitted works from a historical perspective. Specifically, this study deals with the following research topics: 1) the origin and development of knitting. 2) the characteristics of knitting industry according to the change of times, 3) the comparison of local knitting patterns and cultures. 4) 7he symbolic meaning of the designs in the knitted works and theire functions. This research is barred on the survey of the relevant literature and photographs. The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1) The introduction of knitted works was closely connected with the climatic and socio-economic conditions of the places of the origin. Knitted work developed mostly in Northern Europe, a cold area, and the barren, mountainous coastal areas where people frequently used woolen materials for clothes. 2) In ancient times, abstract and geometric patterns have developed in Europe under the influence of Arabian knitted work. Middle Ages saw the flourishing of Arabian knitted works representing the authority of the church. In early modern times, the knitted work assumed the wealth of the royal families and the nobles. But afterward it was gradually Popularized among the middle classes. Knitting was then regarded as one of the women's major cultural activities. However, recently in the interwar periods. the knitting industry did not flourish and the knitted works came to serve merely as comfort goods by political urge. Knitted works were introduced in Korea around 1870 (the 7th or 8th year of king Kojong era) by Catholic missionaries and they started to be made by machine in 1917. 3) As for the propagation of the knitted work into Europe, there are three routes estimated. The traditional knitting patterns of local areas and their characteristics are summed up as follows : (1) England Guernseys are thick dark blue wool, whereas Jerseys are thinner and of various colors. The knitted shawls of Shetland are world-famous for their fine, lace-like texture that they can be through a wedding-ring. The knitted work of Fair Isle shows several distinctive features, such as the use of no more than two colors, patterns with diagonal lines. symmetry within the patterns, the prominent OXO patterns, and horizontal bands of patterning. The representative knitted work of Aran is Aran sweater made for fishermen to developed from guernseys of Scotland. (2) Scandinavian countries are distinguished from other countries by their conservative but creative cultural tradition. Their knitting patterns are characterized by small geometric figures such as dots, triangles, squares, rhombuses, and crosses used often with stars and roses. Scandinavian knitting is also salient for its vertical stripes and simple motifs repeating at short intervals. (3) Baltic area : The Latvian and Lithuania stockings have very ornate patterns. Many of the Estonian knit stockings and mittens share designs. Komi was well-known for its symmetric diamond pattern. Komi patterns include colored stripes, borders of pattern and all-over designs of complex diagonals. (4) Balkan area : In Yugoslavia, the patterns of roses, leaves and flowers were used for stockings, gloves and leggings. Greek knitting resembled southern Russian knitting, which utilized light colored patterns with dark colors for a background. Turkish patterns are symmetric vertically or horizontally. 4) The traditional knitting patterns net only carried symbolic meanings but also served as means of communication. First of all, patterns had incantatory meanings. Patterns also represented Power or authenticity Patterns were symbolic of one's social standing, too. The colors, motifs and their arrangements were very important features symbolizing one's social position or family line. People often communicated by certain pieces of knitted work or patterns.

A Study of the Apparel Sizing of Children's Wear - An Analysis of the Size Increments Utilized in Children’s Wear Based on an Anthropometric Survey -

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze how appropriately the sizing of domestically produced children's wear compares to children's sizes; it is based on an anthropometric survey conducted in 1998. By discovering and understanding discrepancies between the sizing system of children s wear and the real size of children, this study aims to suggest solutions that will lead to increased comfort and more suitable fitting in children's clothes. This research analyzes and compares 'the extent of growth between age groups' with 'the difference in sizing system in use by manufacturers'. The study focused on aged 4 to 12 children, who are usually divided in two groups; primary students and toddlers. In total, seven sizes were selected: bust, waist, and hip (which are girth sizes), and height, back neck to waist (top length), sleeve length, and waist to ankle (slacks length) as representing length. The results of this research are analyzed by basing on the actual increments between the sizes of children's wear in certain basic items rather than sizes themselves because each size quite differed according to companies, items and designs. Significantly, the increase in the sizing was not as great as the average biennial growth rate of children. The consequences are poorer fit and unsuitable representative value for each age group because the actual sizes of children increasingly differ from the sample size. Observing the increments in several sizes, we found that 81.8% of the companies used the certain and equal increases for grading sizes in sleeve length, waist, and bust. In addition, 72.7% of the companies adopted the same increments between sizes in height and hip girth, and 63.6% also chose equal increments in T-shirt length for making smaller or bigger sizes from the sample size. However, sleeve length and pant length were the components that displayed the most varied sizing. Interestingly, the few companies that used different increments between size groups, adopted the change only between one or two size groups, instead of all sizes. In conclusion, this research reveals the unsuitability of the current sizing system and the necessity to increase consumer confidence in the size tags on children's wear by modifying the system to reflect the actual growth of children. The results can also contribute to future study on the development of a new and more accurate sizing system for children's wear.

Development of Slacks Pattern for Old Aged Abdominal Obese Women (복부 비만 노년 여성을 위한 슬랙스 패턴 개발)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the differences in external appearances and functional qualities between the slacks which were patterned on existing designs and on a new design in order to improve on their level of comfort of ready-made clothes for abdominally fat women. Five abdominally fat women in their 60's were chosen as experimental participants. Twenty-four external evaluation items, and seven different actions involving six moving parts of the body were investigated with a 5-level scale in the repeated wearing test. The results were analyzed by statistical methods. The newly designed pattern in this study was definitely superior to the other two patterns(L-type and K-type) on the external appearance evaluation. The newly pattern removed a waist belt and a dart from the front part of the garment and gave surplus space around the waist. It prevented superfluous wrinkles at the abdominal region and thighs. The superfluous wrinkles at the side regions also disappeared due to the length (inseam) reduction from waist to crotch. The newly pattern made the center-line of the back side slightly sloped to the main pattern in order to remove the drooped line. The newly pattern showed the highest score in the functional test of several actions. It was due to the reduction of the length from waist to crotch as well as the belt width. It made waist-line movement better, and made it easier and more comfortable to sit down. The newly pattern also showed the highest score in the functional test classified by specific movements of parts of the body for the same purpose. The slacks which were made of elastic materials showed better results than the non-elastic ones on external appearances and functional test items. It showed that the elastic materials played a better role in the increase of functional action of abdominally fat, aged women. This study suggests that the newly designed slacks pattern could give abdominally fat, aged women better external features and a more comfortable fitting sensation. As well, the results were significant as basic data to produce ready-made and/or tailer-made garments.
