A thinning algorithm -based image analysis technique was developed to measure corn root lengths. The root length measurement method was evaluated by comparing thread lengths measured by the image analysis system with actual thread lengths. The length measurement method accurately estimated actual thread lengths (less than 2% calculated error). Also, a rapid root length density measurement procedure, which utilizes the above root length measurement method, was developed to estimate corn root length density without washing the roots. Root length densities estimated from the cut soil surface of core samples taken from the field were paired with the root length densities determined from washed roots from the same soil core sample. A linear relationship between these two values was expected and was found. Eliminating the root washing procedure reduces the time required for measuring corn root length density substantially.
With using artificial neural networks (ANNs), an analytical study related to the heated length effect on critical heat flux(CHF) has been carried out to make an improvement of the CHF prediction accuracy based on local condition correlations or table. It has been carried out to suggest a feasible criterion of the threshold length-to-diameter (L/D) value in which heated length could affect CHF. And within the criterion, a L/D correction factor has been developed through conventional regression. In order to validate the developed L/D correction factor, CHF experiment for various heated lengths have been carried out under low and intermediate pressure conditions. The developed threshold L/D correlation provides a new feasible criterion of L/D threshold value. The developed correction factor gives a reasonable accuracy fur the original database, showing the error of -2.18% for average and 27.75% for RMS, and promising results for new experimental data.
This study develops a bodice pattern for high school girls aged 17 to 19 that use virtual garment simulation. The study developed a bodice pattern based on the fit evaluation result for two selected bodice patterns. The basic formula of the design method based on the result of 3 times of fit evaluation is as follows: waist back $length=stature/8{\times}1.85cm$, waist front length=waist back length+bust/40+0.7cm, front bust girth=bust/2+4cm, back bust girth=Chest/2+3cm, armscye depth=Chest/4+0.5cm, back interscye length=bishoulder length -1.2cm, front interscye length=back interscye length -1.2cm, front neck width=back neck width -0.3cm. The developed bodice pattern used Bishoulder Length as a criteria for the calculation formula of back interscye length, and back interscye length as a criteria for the calculation formula of front interscye length. The fit evaluation showed the relevance of the bishoulder length, front interscye length, and back interscye length based on a comparison of the calculated figure. A bodice pattern with great body suitability and fitness to high school girls was developed through 3D virtual garment simulation that calculated the application of body proportion to width. This study only analyzed the evaluation result of a virtual model only in a representative form; however, a pattern study is also proposed to compare and analyze the design methods of patterns by body type.
The effects of various inotropic interventions on the shape of the steady state length tension relation and the length-dependent activation process in cardiac muscle were studied. The influence of inotropic interventions upon the action potential was also observed. The range of varying muscle length was from the optimal length$(l_{max})$, where the active tension production is maximal, to 0.85 $l_{max}$. Changes in stimulus frequency or in external bathing Ca concentration constituted the inotropic interventions in this experiment. The papillary muscles were isolated from the rabbit right ventricles and perfused with $HCO-_3\;-buffered$ normal Tyrode solution which was aerated with $3%\;CO_2-97%\;O_2$ mixed gas and kept at $35^{\circ}C$. Resting Passive tension at $l_{max}$ was approximately 30% of the total tension and appeared from the muscle length of 0.90 $l_{max}$. The effect of stimulus frequency on the steady state level of developed tension was: As the stimulus frequency was increased from 0.1 to 0.5 Hz, there was little change in developed tension. As the frequency was increased further, to a value of about 3 Hz, tension increased steeply. Further increase of the frequency to 5 Hz had little additional effect on the developed tension. The length-tension curves for isometric peak tension became more steeper with the degree of potentiation by inotropic interventions. The relative steepness of the normalized length-tension curves where tension production was expressed as a percentage of maximal tension developed at $l_{max}$, varied inversely with the level of inotropic state and these curves were not superimposable one another. Thus at the stimulus frequency of 2 Hz or at the external Ca concentration of 8 mM, the relative decline in the developed tension for a given change in muscle length was considerably less than the decline observed at the frequency of 0.5 Hz or at the concentration of 2 mM Ca. Action potential duration was prolonged significantly as the frequency increased from 0.2 to 2 Hz, and this change in action potential duration was not observable on the changes in muscle length. There was a tendency of the hyperpolarization of membrane potential when the muscle length was shortened from $l_{max}$ to 0.95 $l_{max}$. These results support the hypothesis that there is a length-dependence of the activation process.
In this paper, a computer automated system has been developed for measuring the focal length of camera lens using the MTF(Modurar Transfer Function) based on the signal processing around a line CCD and autocollimator. An optical Path for the focal length measurement system has been designed around thelight sourec, collimator, camera, mirror and the line CCD. The eyepiece of the collimator is replaced byline CCD, and the mirror is moved along the focal axis by a PC driven step motor. An efficient method has been designed for finding the optimum MTF value for the focal length based on the least squares approach. The developed system is fullycomputer automated: signal transmission to and from the camera, MTF evaluation based on the line CCD, step motor contorl, etc. The developed system has been applied to a practical camera manufacturing process and demonstrated its performance
In the design of column, computation of effective length factor for calculation of allowable compressive stress is inevitable. In this study. computer code which automatically generates effective length factor in the finite element analysis is developed. The program is developed to be used for orthogonal and nonorthogonal frame structure. Some i1lustrative examples verify that the computation results we correct for various cases.
In this research, GTA overlay welding system is developed for inside of straight pipes in various diameter. It can be applied to oil, ship building and plant industry, especially pipes connected to pressure vessels, for the purpose of cost reduction by cladding inside of pipes with corrosion and heat resistant alloys such as stainless steel or Inconel. Developed system consists of GTA power source, torch, wire feeding system, automatic arc length adjusting device, CCD camera and cooling unit. Two types of pipe inside overlay welding system are developed. One is for maximum 3m pipe length with 3 inch ~ 12 inch pipe outer diameter. Another type can be applied to maximum 12m pipe length with 7 ~ 24 inch OD. Developed system successfully produced inside cladded pipe and the results are shown through cross sectional images of the pipes.
We present the design and strength evaluation of an anodically bonded pressurized cavity array, based on the energy release rate measured from the anodically bonded plates of two dissimilar materials. From a theoretical analysis, a simple fracture mechanics model of the pressurized cavity array has been developed. The energy release rate (ERR) of the bonded cavity with an infinite bonding length has been derived in terms of cavity pressure, cavity size, bonding length, plate size and material properties. The ERR with a finite bonding length has been evaluated from the finite element analysis performed for varying cavity and plate sizes. It is found that, for an inter-cavity bonding length greater than the half of the cavity length, the bonding strength of cavity array approaches to that of the infinite plate. For a shorter bonding length, however, the bonding strength of the cavity array is monotonically decreased with the ratio of the bonding length to the cavity length. The critical ERR of 6.21J/㎡ has been measured from anodically bonded silicon-glass plates. A set of critical pressure curves has been generated for varying cavity array sizes, and a design method of the pressurized cavity array has been developed for the failure-free wafer-level packaging of MEMS devices.
A three-dimensional discrete fracture network model was developed in order to simulate the hydraulic characteristics of a granitic rock mass at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) Underground Research Tunnel (KURT). The model used a three-dimensional discrete fracture network (DFN), assuming a correlation between the length and aperture of the fractures, and a trapezoid flow path in the fractures. These assumptions that previous studies have not considered could make the developed model more practical and reasonable. The geologic and hydraulic data of the fractures were obtained in the rock mass at the KURT. Then, these data were applied to the developed fracture discrete network model. The model was applied in estimating the representative elementary volume (REV), the equivalent hydraulic conductivity tensors, and the amount of groundwater inflow into the tunnel. The developed discrete fracture network model can determine the REV size for the rock mass with respect to the hydraulic behavior and estimate the groundwater flow into the tunnel at the KURT. Therefore, the assumptions that the fracture length is correlated to the fracture aperture and the flow in a fracture occurs in a trapezoid shape appear to be effective in the DFN analysis used to estimate the hydraulic behavior of the fractured rock mass.
