  • In this thesis, a new channel estimation technique is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) over time varying channels. The channel estimation algorithm exploits the fact that the estimated channel impulse response (CIR) by using pilot signal is the average value of the CIR variation within an OFDM symbol period. With this fact, the CIR variation is simply estimated through lowpass interpolation of the CIRs of the adjacent OFDM symbols. For signal detection, a time domain equalizer is used in this thesis. Simulation results show that the proposed system improves the bit error rate (BER) over time varying channels.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a promising hybrid structural health monitoring system for structural joints. For this propose, the combined use of vibration-based techniques and electro-mechanical impedance technique is employed. For the verification of the proposed health monitoring scheme, a series of damage scenarios are designed to simulate various situations at which the connection joints can experience during their service life. The obtained experimental results, modal parameters and electro-magnetic impedance signatures, are carefully analyzed to recognize the connecting states and the target damage locations. From the analysis. it is shown that the proposed hybrid health monitoring system is successful for acquiring global and local damage information on the structural joints.

  • In this study, numerical analysis was carried out by using the finite element method to construct the first mode shape of damaged stiffened plates, and the damage locations were detected with two-dimensional discrete wavelet analysis. In the experimental analysis, four different damaged stiffened structures were observed. Firstly, each damaged structure was hit with a shaker, and then accelerometers were used to measure the vibration responses. Secondly, the first mode shape of each structure was obtained by using the wavelet packet, and the location of cracks were also determined by two-dimensional discrete wavelet analysis. The results of the numerical analysis and experimental investigation reveal that the proposed method is applicable to detect single crack or multi-cracks of a stiffened structure. The experimental results also show that fewer measurement points are required with the proposed technique in comparison to those presented in previous studies.

  • A modified method was investigated for the determination of benzo(a)pyrene metabolites generated by the rat liver microsomes based on the HPLC technique with radioactive flow detection. By adding $[^3H]-dexamethasone$ to the B(a)P metabolites mixture metabolized by the microsome, the poor yield of solvent extaction of B(a)P metabolites was compensated.

  • Accurate and reliable tracking of train is essential for a train control system. The fixed block system which utilizes the track circuit has been used widely for detecting train position. As an alternative, the moving block system has the advantage over the fixed block system since it enables shorter headway and easier maintenance. This paper presents a new technique for the train tracking system which uses radio signal for the train position detection. The proposed algorithm uses the phase difference of arrival of radio signal for the detection of train position. Experimental verification of the algorithm is presented in the paper.

  • The NDT(Non-Destructive Testing) is valid for the defect detection of rolling stocks because it can be used to detect the defect in many invisible parts. For example, fatigue cracks are initiated in press fit parts that suffer from fretting fatigue damage such as the wheel seat and the NDT technique can detect those cracks. But the conventional ICFPD method can not apply to detect such cracks in press fit parts of the axle by some technical problems. In this study, we have introduced the new concept ICFPD method that can be applied in press fit parts of the axle. And we have shown the basic techniques of FEM about the new concept ICFPD method.

  • This paper proposed new techniques of rotor position detection for 8/6 pole Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM). This technique is very simple and easy to find out rotor position. The main idea uses the impulse responses which have different values between aligned and unaligned rotor position. In order to obtain the informations of the rotor position, the impulse applied to the unenergized phases and their responses are analyzed to control the speed of SRM without shaft sensor. Experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed method.

  • It has not been performed to inspect the underclad cracking in Korea nuclear plant since there is no Code Requirements for inspection. However, underclad cracks in nuclear pressure vessels were reported firstly in 1970. The objection of this study is to be established the ultrasonic inspection techniques for underclad cracking. The ultrasonic inspection of bimetalic stainless steel weld is very difficult by high attenuation and multiple scattering at weld surface and weld/base metal interface. The various inspection methods using $70^{\circ}$ refracted longitudinal wave, 50/70 tandem transducer, $45^{\circ}\;and\;60^{\circ}$ single shear wave are compared. Experiments on limited specimens applied same condition to nuclear pressure vessels shows that $70^{\circ}$ refracted longitudinal wave method is the best one for the detection of underclad cracks. 50/70 tandem transducer using SPOT(Satellite Pulse Observation Technique) is more effective for underclad crack sizing than other sizing methods.

  • Although guided-waves are very efficient for long-range nondestructive damage inspection, it is not easy to extract meaningful pulses of small magnitude out of noisy signals. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop an efficient signal processing technique for the current guided-wave technology. The specific contribution of this investigation towards achieving this goal, a two-stage Gabor pulse-based matching pursuit algorithm is proposed : rough approximations with a set for predetermined parameters characterizing the Gabor pulse and fine adjustments of the parameters by optimization. The parameters estimated from the measured signal are then used to assess not only the location but also the size of a crack existing in a rod. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the longitudinal wave-based damage detection in rods is considered. To estimate the crack size, Love's theory for the dispersion of longitudinal waves is employed.

  • Hepatitis E virus (HEV), previously referred to as enterically transmitted non-A, non-B hepatitis, is responsible for sporadic infections as well as large epidemics of acute viral hepatitis in developing countries. The disease generally affects young adults and reportedly has a mortality rate of up to 20% in infected pregnant women. HEV was once considered to be a member of the family Caliciviridae, but the unique genomic organization of HEV has led to the removal of HEV from the family and it was provisionally classified in an unassigned family of HEV-like viruses. In situ hybridization provides any cellular detail and histological architecture.[1] However, use of in situ hybridization is largely restricted to the laboratories because this technique is the greater technical complexity and expense compared with immunohistochemistry. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop the immunohistochemistry for the detection of swine HEV from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded hepatic tissues. (omitted)
