Impact of Horizontal Resolution of Regional Climate Model on Precipitation Simulation over the Korean Peninsula (지역 기후 모형을 이용한 한반도 강수 모의에서 수평 해상도의 영향)

  • The impact of horizontal resolution on a regional climate model was investigated by simulating precipitation over the Korean Peninsula. As a regional climate model, the SNURCM(Seoul National University Regional Climate Model) has 21 sigma layers and includes the NCAR CLM(National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Land Model) for land-surface model, the Grell scheme for cumulus convection, the Simple Ice scheme for explicit moisture, and the MRF(Medium-Range Forecast) scheme for PBL(Planetary Boundary Layer) processing. The SNURCM was performed with 20 km resolution for Korea and 60 km resolution for East Asia during a 20-year period (1980-1999). Although the SNURCM systematically underestimated precipitation over the Korean Peninsula, the increase of model resolution simulated more precipitation in the southern region of the Korean Peninsula, and a more accurate distribution of precipitation by reflecting the effect of topography. The increase of precipitation was produced by more detailed terrain data which has a 10 minute terrain in the 20 km resolution model compared to the 30 minute terrain in the 60 km resolution model. The increase in model resolution and more detailed terrain data played an important role in generating more precipitation over the Korean Peninsula. While the high resolution model with the same terrain data resulted in increasing of precipitation over the Korean Peninsula including the adjoining sea, the difference of the terrain data resolution only influenced the precipitation distribution of the mountainous area by increasing the amount of non-convective rain. In conclusion, the regional climate model (SNURCM) with higher resolution simulated more precipitation over the Korean Peninsula by reducing the systematic underestimation of precipitation over the Korean Peninsula.

Field measurements of wind characteristics over hilly terrain within surface layer

  • This paper investigates the topographic effects on wind characteristics over hilly terrain, based on wind data recorded at a number of meteorological stations in or near complex terrain. The multiply data sources allow a more detailed investigation of the flow field than is normally possible. Vertical profiles of mean and turbulent wind components from a Sodar profiler were presented and then modeled as functions of height and wind speed. The correlations between longitudinal and vertical wind components were discussed. The phenomena of flow separation and generation of vortices were observed. The distance-dependence of the topographic effects on gust factors was revealed subsequently. Furthermore, the canyon effect was identified and discussed based on the observations of wind at a saddle point between two mountain peaks. This study aims to further understanding of the characteristics of surface wind over rugged terrain. The presented results are expected to be useful for structural design, prevention of pollutant dispersion, and validation of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) models or techniques over complex terrains.

  • This paper presents conceptual design and analysis of the rough terrain mobile robot. The requirement list of the robot is derived to make it possible to deliver small robots and communication equipment to certain place. In addition, detailed analysis of the existing mobile mechanisms is performed. Based on the requirement list and analysis, the proposed rough terrain mobile robot is systematically designed and through extensive simulations, its capability of moving on various rough terrains is successfully verified.

A numerical simulation of flow field in a wind farm on complex terrain

  • A three-dimensional flow simulation was performed to investigate the wind flow around wind-power generation facilities on mountainous area of complex terrain. A digital map of eastern mountainous area of Korea including a wind farm was used to model actual complex terrain. Rotating wind turbines in the wind farm were also modeled in the computational domain with detailed geometry of blade by using the frozen rotor method. Wind direction and speed to be used as a boundary condition were taken from local meteorological reports. The numerical results showed not only details of flow distribution in the wind farm but also the variation in the performance of the wind turbines due to the installed location of the turbines on complex terrain. The wake effect of the upstream turbine on the performance of the downstream one was also examined. The methodology presented in this study may be used in selecting future wind farm site and wind turbine locations in the selected site for possible maximum power generation.

  • As the progress regarding spatial analysis on features such as landscape, sunlight, shadow, and direct ray using 3D simulation, it is required to research the creation of 3D terrain models crucial for 3D simulations. In this paper, we suggested the methods to create the 3D terrain model for the state after development, by transfer the 2D plan to 3D terrain model using the normal equation. Automated algorithm producing 3D terrain model from 2D plan was developed. And It is expected to be needed more studies detailed.

  • Recently, the construction of three dimensional spatial information of Dam reservoir area is very important part in Dam management work such as sediment survey, but it is difficult to acquire detailed terrain data because totalstation and single beam echo sounder are applied to terrain survey. This study presented method to construct detailed terrain data of Dam reservoir area using LiDAR and multi beam echo sounder. First, LiDAR survey was carried out in land zone and calibration process was applied by ground control point. And also the DEM of land zone was constructed by using algorithm, which eliminated building and vegetation class. As the result of validation of LiDAR DEM using GPS terrain survey, it was possible to construct three dimensional terrain data that was satisfied with the tolerance error of LiDAR, which was the standard error of LiDAR DEM showed as 0.108m. Also multi beam echo sounder was applied to the survey of water zone and it could construct spatial information that was satisfied with bathymetry surveying tolerance error of International Hydrographic Organization by validation with terrain survey data. And LiDAR and multi beam echo sounder data were integrated and it was possible to construct three dimensional spatial imagery information that can be applied to Dam management work such as the estimation of sediment amounts or the monitoring of terrain change by linking with high resolution orthophoto.

Efficient Path Finding in 3D Games by Using Visibility Tests (가시성 검사를 이용한 3차원 게임에서의 효율적인 경로 탐색)

  • The navigation mesh represents a terrain as a set of triangles on which characters may move around. The navigation mesh cab be generated automatically, and it is more flexible in representing 3D surface. The number of triangles to represent a terrain may vary according to the structure of the terrain. As characters are moving around on a navigation mesh, the path planning can be performed more easily by projecting the 3D surfaces into 2D space. However, when the terrain is represented with an elaborated mesh of large number of triangles to achieve more realistic movements, the path finding can be very inefficient because there are too many states(triangles) to be searched. In this paper, we propose an efficient method of path finding in 3D games where the terrain is represented by navigation meshes. Our method uses the visibility tests. When the graph-based search is applied to elaborated polygonal meshes for detailed terrain representation, the path finding can be very inefficient because there are too many states(polygons) to be searched. In our method, we reduce the search space by using visibility tests so that the search can be fast even on the detailed terrain with large number of polygons. First we find the visible vertices of the obstacles, and define the heuristic function as the distance to the goal through those vertices. By doing that, the number of states that the graph-based search visits can be substantially reduced compared to the plane search with straight-line distance heuristic.

Simulation of the Dispersion of Air Pollutants in the Shihwa Area (시화지구의 대기오염물질 확산에 관한 전산모사)

  • Gaussian type models have limitations on predicting a detailed description of the near flow and pollution leads over complex terrains under neutral atmospheric conditions. Also, most models used recently have lack of ability to include atmospheric reactions. The model based on the numerical solution of the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and conservation equations needs to be developed to improve the limitations mentioned above. When the model was applied to the Shihwa area where the tracer experiment had been carried out, the simulation results have a great difference from the experimental results. There are two reasons that make the difference between the results by the model and the experiment. First, the Shihwa area is not a complex terrain. Second, meteorological data is insufficient. Therefore, the model should be applied to predict the dispersion of air pollutants over complex terrain rather than flat terrain in order that the model could be verified because the model was developed for the prediction of the dispersion over a complex terrain.
