Recent high-speed trains around the world have achieved remarkable improvement in speed. In Korea, the new high-speed train with maximum speed of 400km/h has been developing through the 'Future High-Speed Rail System Project'. The improvement in train speed brings numerous aerodynamic problems such as strong aerodynamic resistance, noise, drastic pressure variation due to the crosswind or passing by, micro-pressure wave at tunnel exit, and so on. Especially, the nose shape of high-speed train is closely related to the most of the aerodynamic problems. Also the pantograph has to be considered for noise prevention and detachment problems. In this paper, the project, 'Research on the Aerodynamic Technology Advancement of the High-Speed EMU' is introduced briefly, which is one of the efforts for the speed improvement of the 'HEMU400x'. Finally, two main results of train nose and pantograph will be shown. First, the optimization of the cross-sectional area distribution of the high-speed train nose to reduce tunnel micro-pressure wave, and second, robust design optimization of the panhead shape of a pantograph.
A deep understanding of the characteristics and mechanism of geyser boiling and capillary pumping is necessary to optimize a high-temperature sodium heat pipe. In this work, the Volume of Fluid (VOF) two-phase model and the capillary force model in the mesh wick were used to model the complex phase change and fluid flow in the heat pipe. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations successfully predicted the process of bubble nucleation, growth, aggregation, and detachment from the wall in the liquid pool of the evaporation section of the heat pipe in horizontal and tilted states, as well as the reflux phenomenon of capillary suction within the wick. The accuracy and stability of the capillary force model within the wick were verified. In addition, the causes of geyser boiling in heat pipes were analyzed by extracting the oscillation distribution of heat pipe wall temperature. The results show that adding the capillary force model within the wick structure can reasonably simulate the liquid backflow phenomenon at the condensation; Under the horizontal and inclined operating conditions of the heat pipe, the phenomenon of local dry-out will occur, resulting in a sharp increase in local temperature. The speed of bubble detachment and the timely reflux of liquid sodium (condensate) replenishment in the wick play a vital role in the geyser temperature oscillation of the tube wall. The numerical simulation method and the results of this study are anticipated to provide a good reference for the investigation of geyser boiling in high-temperature heat pipes.
The metal transfer in $CO_2$ welding shows the transition of transfer mode from short-circuiting to repelled transfer will the increase of welding current. While the short-circuiting mode in $CO_2$ welding has been studied very extensively relating with droplet formation and spatter generation, the repelled transfer has little been understood. In this study, high current $CO_2$ welding has been performed with bead-on-plate welds along with the waveform analyzer and high speed camera. The image of high speed camera was synchronized with its waveform so that the moment of spatter generation could be realized during drop detachment. As a results of this study, it was found that welding arc changes its location either once or three times and thus single or double pulse signals were developed in the voltage waveform. Whenever the arc moved its location, new arc was developed in a explosive way and thus it caused spatter generation. Specially severe spattering took place when the waveform showed a double-peak pattern. As a consequence of these results, new waveform control techniques could be suggested for suppressing the spatter generation in the high-current $CO_2$ welding.
This study was intended to develop the mathematical model of the head-fed type threshing unit. As the first step, the physical model of the threshing phenomena was considered to consist of four separate processes as 1) detachment process of grains, 2) movement of grains between the cylinder and concave, 3) grain penetration through stems of bundle, and 4) grain passing through concave. The mathematical and computer models were developed based on the physical models. Threshing experiments were performed and determined the distribution of grain accumulation along the cylinder shaft by varying the moisture content of grains, feeding rate, and cylinder speed. It was found that the model developed coincided very well with the experimental results for the varied operational conditions. Greater concentration of grains passing through concave toward the thresher inlet was equally true for the model and experiment work for the threshing of grains with higher moisture content and with higher cylinder-speed. The model could be used for obtaining the optimized design or for optimizing the performance of the head-fed type threshing unit if term as to power requirement for threshing may be additionally included in the developed model.

In this study, an edible fresh corn harvest testing machine was designed and manufactured. And harvesting performance was analyzed through the field test. The testing machine is of the tractor attached type. It is connected to the tractor PTO shaft to transfer power to the each part of the harvesting machine. And it harvests fresh corn by one row through the processes of cutting, stem crushing, detaching, and collecting. The performance test was performed at PTO speed (540, 750, 1050 rpm, respectively), working speed (0.1, 0.15, 0.2 m/s, respectively), and cropping cultivation (row spacing·hill spacing 70·25 cm, 70·40 cm, 90·30 cm, respectively). The performance test was repeated three times in the 15 m section. The detachment loss ratio, uncollected crop ratio, damage ratio, and harvest ratio were analyzed. As a result of the performance test, it was analyzed that the PTO speed 540 rpm, running speed of 0.1 m/s, and row spacing·hill spacing 70·40 cm were the optimal condition.
The final pattern of the skeletal muscle of a vertebrate depends on the position-specific behavior of the muscle precursor cells during early developmental process and the abdominal muscle is made of cells which migrate a relatively long distance from their original tissue, myotome of dorsal mesoderm. We report the spatia-temporal migration pattern of abdominal muscle in Xenopus laevis by in situ hybridization and immunohistological studies. Shortly after hatching tadpole stage (stage 31/32), a group of myotomal cells detaches from the lower tip of the second somite and migrates ventrally to the lower position of abdomen. At stage 34/35, a second cell group migrates away from the third somite. Total 7 myotomal cell groups migrate ventrally one by one from the second to eighth myotome along their own pathways through the cell free space located between epidermis and subepidermal layer of the abdomen. During migration, the sizes of the cell groups (abdominal muscle anlagens) are increased to several tens fold. Around stage 40 all the abdominal muscle anlagens reaches their final positions and are interconnected side by side rostrocaudally. They are also connected to other types of muscles, forming a large multisegmented abdominal muscle. Heat shock study suggests that the disruption of segmentation of somites does not block the detachment of abdominal muscle anlagen, though the treatment gave stage- and dosagedependent effects on the migration speed.

The hydrodynamic impact problem was studied from 1929 to recent. Especially, Impact pressure is important for the design of the ships and offshore structure and spacecrafts, and under weapons. A ship traveling at high speed or in heavy sea has its bow and bottom damaged by high pressure caused by impact with and detachment from the water surface. Considerable impact may also occur when large waves hit the cross member or deck plate of an offshore structure within the splash zone. Many engineering cases require consideration of impact pressure, the movement of objects and change of the flow field. This study was obtained the pressure distribution of a falling body that is deadrise angle $0^{\circ}$ and deadrise angle $5^{\circ}$ upon a water surface by the experiment with the impact machine. The theoretical equation was obtained the air region and the interface and the water region which devide 3 parties between the body and the water surface for an investigation of the complete phenomena. Pressure distributions and histories compare favorably with available experimental data. The numerical results are similar to the experimental results for the impact force type with Fo(1+$cos{\pi}t/tc$).
Damage by high-speed impact fracture is a dominant mode of failure in several applications of concrete structures. Numerical modelling can play a crucial role in understanding and predicting complex fracture processes. The commonly used mesh-based Finite Element Method has difficulties in accurately modelling the high deformation and disintegration associated with fracture, as this often distorts the mesh. Even with careful re-meshing FEM often fails to handle extreme deformations and results in poor accuracy. Moreover, simulating the mechanism of fragmentation requires detachment of elements along their boundaries, and this needs a fine mesh to allow the natural propagation of damage/cracks. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is an alternative particle based (mesh-less) Lagrangian method that is particularly suitable for analysing fracture because of its capability to model large deformation and to track free surfaces generated due to fracturing. Here we demonstrate the capabilities of SPH for predicting brittle fracture by studying a slender concrete structure (column) under the impact of a high-speed projectile. To explore the effect of the projectile material behaviour on the fracture process, the projectile is assumed to be either perfectly-elastic or elastoplastic in two separate cases. The transient stress field and the resulting evolution of damage under impact are investigated. The nature of the collision and the constitutive behaviour are found to considerably affect the fracture process for the structure including the crack propagation rates, and the size and motion of the fragments. The progress of fracture is tracked by measuring the average damage level of the structure and the extent of energy dissipation, which depend strongly on the type of collision. The effect of fracture property (failure strain) of the concrete due to its various compositions is found to have a profound effect on the damage and fragmentation pattern of the structure.
Objective: To analyze the fatigue resistance, debonding force, and failure type of fiber-reinforced composite, polyethylene ribbon-reinforced, and braided stainless steel wire lingual retainers in vitro. Methods: Roots of human mandibular central incisors were covered with silicone, mimicking the periodontal ligament, and embedded in polymethylmethacrylate. The specimens (N = 50), with two teeth each, were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10/group) according to the retainer materials: (1) Interlig (E-glass), (2) everStick Ortho (E-glass), (3) DentaPreg Splint (S2-glass), (4) Ribbond (polyethylene), and (5) Quad Cat wire (stainless steel). After the recommended adhesive procedures, the retainers were bonded to the teeth by using flowable composite resin (Tetric Flow). The teeth were subjected to 10,00,000 cyclic loads (8 Hz, 3 - 100 N, $45^{\circ}$ angle, under $37{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ water) at their incisoproximal contact, and debonding forces were measured with a universal testing machine (1 mm/min crosshead speed). Failure sites were examined under a stereomicroscope (${\times}40$ magnification). Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Results: All the specimens survived the cyclic loading. Their mean debonding forces were not significantly different (p > 0.05). The DentaPreg Splint group (80%) showed the highest incidence of complete adhesive debonding, followed by the Interlig group (60%). The everStick Ortho group (80%) presented predominantly partial adhesive debonding. The Quad Cat wire group (50%) presented overlying composite detachment. Conclusions: Cyclic loading did not cause debonding. The retainers presented similar debonding forces but different failure types. Braided stainless steel wire retainers presented the most repairable failure type.

This study aims to understand the mode characteristics of a droplet under a periodic forced vibration. To predict the resonance frequency of a droplet, theoretical and experimental approaches were employed. A high-speed camera was used to capture the various deformation characteristics of a droplet-mode shape, detachment, separated secondary droplet, and skewed deformation. The comparison between the theoretical and the experimental approaches shows a ~10% discrepancy in the prediction of the resonance frequency, which appears to be caused by the effect of contact line friction, nonlinear wall adhesion, and experimental uncertainty. Owing to contact-line pinning and smaller amplitude, the droplet shape becomes symmetric and the size of each lobe at the resonance frequency exceeds that at the neighbor, which is out of resonance.
