  • The natural frequencies of a mechanical system are determined by the system parameters such as masses and stiffness of the system. Since material irregularities and manufacturing tolerances always exist in most of practical engineering situations, the system parameters always have uncertainties. As the uncertainties of the parameters increase, the uncertainties of the system natural frequencies also increases. Then, the reliability of the system deteriorates. So, the uncertainty of the system natural frequencies should be analyzed accurately and considered in the design of the system. In order to analyze the uncertainty of the system natural frequencies employing most of existing uncertainty analysis methods, the probability distributions of the uncertain system parameters should be identified. In most practical situations, however, identification of the probability distributions is almost impossible because of limited time and cost. For that case, the reliability should be estimated based on finite samples of the system parameters. In this paper, sample based reliability estimation method employing extreme value theory was proposed. Using the proposed estimation method, sample based reliability design of the system natural frequencies was conducted.

  • The agricultural machine estimated sales survey is a survey to estimate annual sales quantities of eight major agricultural machines such as tracter, combine, etc. The purpose of this study is to design a multipurpose sample for the agricultural machine estimated sales survey. Main achievements of this study are to present an efficient stratification criterion and to suggest a reasonable estimation method by using the concept of post-stratification.

  • The accuracy of sample-and-hold amplifiers (SHA's) empolying a CMOS process in limited by nonideal factors such as linearity errors of an op amp and feedthrough errors of switches. In this work, after some linearity improvement techniques for an op amp are discussed, three different SHA's for video signal processing are designed, simulated, and compared. The CMOS SHA design techniques with a 12-bit level accuracy are proposed by minimizing cirucit errors based on the simulated results.

  • In this paper, we derive an approximate optimal Bayes group sequential design for a given loss function. We use the Monte-Carlo method to compare the ASN(average sample size) function and Bayes risk of approximate optimal Bayes group sequential design, Pocock design and O'Brien and Fleming design. Also introduced is the concept of Bayes efficiency and percentage loss of information due to grouping for the group sequential design and use it to measure the loss of information for different group sizes.

  • In statistical process control applications, variable sample size (VSS) $\bar{X}$ chart is often used to detect the assignable cause quickly. However, it is usually assumed that only one assignable cause results in the out-of-control in the process. In this paper, we propose the algorithm to minimize the function of cost per unit time and compare the economic design and the statistical design by use of the value of cost per unit time. We consider double assignable causes to occur with compound in the process and adopt the Markov chain approach to investigate the statistical properties of VSS $\bar{X}$ chart. A procedure that can calculate the control chart's parameters is proposed by the economic design.

  • A $2{\times}2$ Cross-over design is widely used in clinical trials for comparison studies of two kinds of drugs or medical treatments. This design has many statistical methods such as Hills-Armitage's (1979) method or Koch's (1972) method. In this paper, we propose a nonparametric test for $2{\times}2$ Cross-over design based on a two-sample test suggested by Baumgartner et al. (1998). In addition, a Monte Carlo simulation study is adapted to compare the power of the proposed methods with those of previous methods.

  • The objective of this paper is to provide a model for effective implementation of costing RAM management in the design and procurement of production facility considering the system cost-performance trade-off. This research proposes a two-step approach of costing RAM design and test of system RAM for production facility. In Step 1, a static model is proposed to find an initial system configuration to meet the required performance based on system RAM and LCC and analyzes the trade-off relationships between various factors of RAM and LCC. In the second Step, we developed time and failure truncated models for system reliability test and analysis. For the computational purpose, we developed computer programs and have shown the sample results. By the sample test run, the proposed model has shown the possibilities to provide a good method to analyze system performance evaluation for both design and operational phase, This model can be applied to a wide variety of systems not only for costing RAM of the production facilities but also for the other kinds of equipment.

  • Design effect is often used in designing and planning sample surveys and/or in evaluating the efficiency of complex design features of the surveys. In this study, we applied Gabler et al. (2006)'s design effect model to 2013 Consumer behavior survey for food that was carried out by stratified two-stage sampling. Usability and adequacy of the design model to a real survey data are discussed and evaluated.

  • In clinical trials of nursing research, the sample size determination is one of the most important factor. Although sample size must be considered at the design stage, it has been disregarded in most clinical trials. The power analysis is usually performed before study begins to compute sample size and the power can also be calculated at the end of study in order to justify study result. The power analysis is essential especially when the clinical trials can not show significant differences. In this paper, we review the statistical methods for power analysis and sample size formulae in nursing research. Sample size formulae and the corresponding examples are discussed according to the six types of studies ; mean for one sample, proportion for one sample, means in two samples, proportions in two samples, correlation coefficient and ANOVA.

  • Rotation sampling designs may be classified into two categories. The first type uses the same sample unit for the entire life of the survey. The second type uses the sample unit only for a fixed number of times. In both type of designs, the entire sample is partitioned into a finite number(=G) of rotation groups. This paper is generalization of the first type designs. Since the generalized design can be identified by only G rotation groups and recall level 1, we denote this rotation system as l/G rotation design. Under l/G rotation design, variance and mean squared error (MSE) of generalized composite estimator are derived, incorporating two type of biases and exponentially decaying correlation pattern. Compromising MSE's of some selected l/G designs, we investigate design efficiency, design gap effect, ans the effects of correlation and bias.
