  • The present study investigated the effects of geometric parameters considered on the performance of an automotive scroll compressor by assuming ideal, semi-real and real gases for R-134a. The geometric parameters were center thickness of scroll, height of scroll and the size of discharge port. Fourth-order Runge-Kutta method was applied to solve the thermodynamic equations, leaking rate equation and the equation of motion of discharge valve for ideal, semi-real, and real gases. The volumetric and adiabatic efficiencies for semi-real and real gases differed little, but those for ideal gas differed by 18% and 25% compared with those for real gas at 2,000rpm. The volumetric efficiency changed little as the design angle of scroll (${\gamma}$) changed, but the adiabatic efficiency at ${\gamma}$ of $34^{\circ}$ was higher by 2.4% than that of $147^{\circ}$ for 2,000rpm. The volumetric and adiabatic efficiencies at scroll height of 29.8mm were higher by 1.7% and 2.8% than those of 65.8mm. The volumetric efficiency changed little as the size of discharge port changed, but the adiabatic efficiency increased a little as the size of discharge port decreased.

  • The efficiency of the hybrid systems which are composed of compound planetary gear sets depend on the amount of the recirculating energy among the motors and battery. This paper studies the analysis of the system efficiency with the parameters, ${\alpha},\;{\beta},\;{\gamma_a},\;{\gamma_b}$ and $\gamma_s$. The efficiency of the systems and the relative torque, speed and power of the power resources are represented by these parameters. The recuperating parameter $\kappa$ which makes the systems generalized is introduced, so the efficiencies of the modes such as the hybrid mode, the engine mode, the motoring mode and the recuperating mode are analyzed with simple equations. The tendency of the system efficiency according to the variations of the $\gamma_s$ and $\kappa$ are studied, by which it can be possible to reduce the loss of the power because the strategies for avoiding the singular speed ratio $\gamma_s$ are helpful for the system efficiency and specific value of $\kappa$ can increase the efficiency of the systems.

  • The quality of track-bed fills of railways has been controlled by field measurements of density $({\gamma}_d)$ and the results of plate-load tests. The control measures are compatible with the design procedures whose design parameter is $k_{30}$ for both ordinary-speed railways and high-speed railways. However, one of fatal flaws of the design procedures that there are no simple laboratory measurement procedures for the design parameters ($k_{30}$ or, $E_{v2}$ and $E_{v2}/E_{v1}$) in design stage. A new quality control procedure, in parallel with the advent of the new design procedure, is being proposed. This procedure is based upon P-wave velocity involving consistently the evaluation of design parameters in design stage and the field measurements during construction. The Key concept of the procedure is that the target value for field compaction control is the P-wave velocity determined at OMC using modified compaction test, and direct-arrival method is used for the field measurements during construction. The procedure was verified at a test site and the p-wave velocity turned out to be an excellent control measure. The specifications for the control also include field compaction water content of OMC${\pm}$2% as well as the p-wave velocity.

  • Half Value Layer calculations theoretically need prior specification of linear attenuation calculations, since the HVL value is derived by dividing ln(2) by the linear attenuation coefficient. The purpose of this study was to establish a direct computational model for determining HVL, a vital parameter in nuclear radiation safety studies and shielding material design. Accordingly, a typical gamma-ray transmission setup has been modeled using MCNPX (version 2.4.0) general-purpose Monte Carlo code. The MCNPX code's INPUT file was designed with two detection locations for primary and secondary gamma-rays, as well as attenuator material between those detectors. Next, Half Value Layer values of some well-known gamma-ray shielding materials such as lead and ordinary concrete have been calculated throughout a broad gamma-ray energy range. The outcomes were then compared to data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The Half Value Layer values obtained from MCNPX were reported to be highly compatible with the HVL values obtained from the NIST standard database. Our results indicate that the developed INPUT file may be utilized for direct computations of Half Value Layer values for nuclear safety assessments as well as medical radiation applications. In conclusion, advanced simulation methods such as the Monte Carlo code are very powerful and useful instruments that should be considered for daily radiation safety measures. The modeled MCNPX input file will be provided to the scientific community upon reasonable request.

  • This study is to evaluate the probable snowfall depth by the point frequency analysis and to draw the map of probable snowfall depth in Korea. The 14 probability distributions which has been widely used in hydrologic frequency analysis are applied to the annual maximum depth of snowfall data. The parameters of each probability distribution are estimated by method of moments, maximum likelihood method and method of probability weighted moments. The estimated parameters were checked by parameter validity conditions of each assumed probability distribution. Four tests that are $X^2-test$, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Cramer von Mises test and probability plot correlation coefficient test are used in this study to determine the goodness of fit of the distributions. Mostly the 2-parameter gamma distribution was determined as appropriate distribution for the annual maximum new snowfall depth. The probable snowfall depth were obtained from appropriate distribution for the selected return periods and the maps of probable snowfall depth were presented. It will be useful to specify the snowfall load for the design of agricultural facilities such as vinyl house and cattle shed.

  • In this paper, design equations for the calculation of the dimensions and characteristics of the ferrite magnet DC motor are derived. Through the computer iterative calculation applying the parameter survey method with those equations, the design method is presented. The following facts and the propriety of the design method are identified by comparing with the computer simulation results and dimension elements for the proposed motor. (1) The dimension ratio and the pole arc ratio as simulation parameters are in close connection with the dimension elements and motor performance, and those values of the parameter are important factor in determining the reasonable dimension of the motor. (2) It is proved that the minimization of the ferrite magnet volume is possible by representing the permeance coefficient as a function of the flux density ratio only. (3) It is shown that the torque equation suggested by introducing the copper loss area density of the conductors located in the slot is available in the determination of motor dimensions.

  • The quality control for DCM is based on the unconfined compressive strength of laboratory treated soils, the cement contents, setting and checking the strength of in-situ treated soils. Also the strength of in-situ is checked mainly by the core boring. In case of large size construction, it might be considered the distribution of DCM strength data as normal distribution, so it might be employed a statistical method to evaluate DCM strength easily. In Japan, it has been established correlation between the strength of laboratory treated soils, the strength of in-suit treated soil and the design strength. Also It has been employed domestically the correlation suggested by Japan. But the correlation, so called $\lambda$(ratio in the strength of laboratory treated soils and the in-suit) and $\gamma$(ratio in the strength of in-suit and the design strength), might be far different with the domestic due to different DCM system and soil properties. so it might be restrictive to use domestically. Therefore in this paper, It is presented correlation between the strength of laboratory treated soils and in-suit treated soil to be employed domestically by evaluating $\lambda$ based on the domestic in-suit illustrations.

  • In this research, for improving the measurement performance of Prompt Gamma-ray Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) set-up, a new optimization method for set-up design was proposed and investigated. At first, the calculation method for Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) was proposed. Since the SNR could be calculated and quantified accurately, the SNR was chosen as the evaluation parameter in the new optimization method. For discussing the feasibility of the SNR optimization method, two kinds of PGNAA set-ups were designed in the MCNP code, based on the SNR optimization method and the previous signal optimization method, respectively. Meanwhile, the single element spectra analysis method was proposed, and the analysis effect of single element spectra as well as element sensitivity were used for comparing the measurement performance. Since the simulation results showed the better measurement performance of set-up designed by SNR optimization method, the experimental set-ups were built for the further testing, finally demonstrating the feasibility of the SNR optimization method for PGNAA setup design.

  • For quality improvement, it is important to reduce variations of the quality characteristic. That can be achieved by the a, pp.ication of parameter design methodology to make the performance of the quality characteristic robust over the variety of noise conditions. Taguchi has used the signal-to-noise ratios for that purpose. For the static target characteristic and the dynamic characteristic problem, we propose a reasonable generalized SN ratio and p-value plot for identifying dispersion factors. The orginal idea of the p-value plot in from the gamma-plot in Lunani, Nair & Wasserman(1995). The graphic advantage of the p-value polt for identifying dispersion factors is illustrated through constructed examples.
