  • In battery-operated systems, an isolated converter is used to interface the utility grid with the system to increase stability when charging and discharging batteries. Systems such as vehicle-to-grids (V2Gs), on-board chargers, and energy storage systems (ESSs) have recently become popular, and the roles of isolated converters have become important considerations in fabricating such devices. A fixed-frequency LLC converter, which is a type of isolated converter, presents the advantages of high efficiency and high power density by performing zero-voltage switching (ZVS) over wide frequency ranges. However, the magnetizing inductance of the LLC converter should be designed to enable ZVS in all switching devices. Therefore, in this study, the operating characteristics of the LLC circuit are analyzed, and an optimal design method for ZVS operation is established. Moreover, an 8 kW LLC high-efficiency and high-power-density resonant converter is designed and tested for ESS application. The LLC converter achieves 98% efficiency at rated power.

  • In this paper, probabilistic distribution of chassis component fatigue life is determined statistically by applying the design of experiments and the Pearson system. To construct p - ${\varepsilon}$ - N curve, the case that fatigue data are random variables is attempted. Probabilistic density function (p.d.f) for fatigue life is obtained by the design of experiment and using this p.d.f fatigue reliability, any aimed fatigue life can be calculated. Lower control arm and rear torsion bar of chassis components are selected as examples for analysis. Component load histories which are obtained by multi-body dynamic simulation for Belsian load history are used. Finite element analysis is performed by using commercial software MSC Nastran and fatigue analysis is performed by using FE Fatigue. When strain-life curve itself is random variable, the probability density function of fatigue life has very little difference from log-normal distribution. And the cases of fatigue data are random variables, probability density functions are approximated to Beta distribution. Each p.d.f is verified by Monte-Carlo simulation.

  • Plasma models are crucial to equipment design and process optimization. A radial basis function network(RBFN) in con-junction with statistical experimental design has been used to model a process plasma. A 2$^4$ full factorial experiment was employed to characterized a hemispherical inductively coupled plasma(HICP) in characterizing HICP, the factors that were varied in the design include source power, pressure, position of shuck holder, and Cl$_2$ flow rate. Using a Langmuir probe, plasma attributes were collected, which include typical electron density, electron temperature. and plasma potential as well as their spatial uniformity. Root mean-squared prediction errors of RBEN are 0.409(10(sup)12/㎤), 0.277(eV), and 0.699(V), for electron density, electron temperature, and Plasma potential, respectively. For spatial uniformity data, they are 2.623(10(sup)12/㎤), 5.704(eV) and 3.481(V), for electron density, electron temperature, and plasma potential, respectively. Comparisons with generalized regression neural network(GRNN) revealed an improved prediction accuracy of RBFN as well as a comparable performance between GRNN and statistical response surface model. Both RBEN and GRNN, however, experienced difficulties in generalizing training data with smaller standard deviation.

  • This study evaluate the effect of laundering on the deformation of knitted spandex/cotton fabrics compared with that of knitted cotton fabrics. Commercial knitted spandex/cotton and knitted cotton fabrics for T-shits were laundered in a drum-type washing machine and dried in a tumble dryer. Wale spirality, shrinkage, elastic recovery and surface contour of knitted fabrics were investigated under different laundering conditions: washing temperature, presoaking time and washing cycles. Knitted spandex/cotton fabrics had a lower angle of spirality than knitted cotton fabrics. After the first washing cycle, the angles of spirality of all the fabrics had decreased greatly. Knitted cotton fabric of low density deformed more than that of higher density. Knitted spandex/cotton. fabric of low density shrank less, because of the greater extension given during heat-set. Permanent elongation length at the 80$\%$ extension was longer than at the 50$\%$ extension, and the knitted spandex/cotton fabric which was expanded greatly during heat-set had a lower elastic recovery rate. The surface appearance of the knitted spandex/cotton fabrics was worsl~ than that of the knitted cotton fabrics before laundering and after repeated laundering, because of the much protruded cotton fibers from the yarns.

  • For accurate and reliable process design for phenol oxidation in a plug flow reactor with supercritical water, modeling can be very insightful. Here, the velocity and density distribution along the reactor have been predicted by a numerical model and variations of temperature and phenol mass fraction are calculated under various flow conditions. The numerical model shows that as we proceed along the length of the reactor the temperature falls from above 430 ℃ to approximately 380 ℃. This is because the generated heat from the exothermic reaction is less that the amount lost through the walls of the reactor. Also, along the length, the linear velocity falls to less than one-third of the initial value while the density more than doubles. This is due to the fall in temperature which results in higher density which in turn demands a lower velocity to satisfy the continuity equation. Having a higher oxygen concentration at the reactor inlet leads to much faster phenol destruction; this leads to lower capital costs (shorter reactor will be required); however, the operational expenditures will increase for supplying the needed oxygen. The phenol destruction depends heavily on the kinetic parameters and can be as high as 99.9%. Using different kinetic parameters is shown to significantly influence the predicted distributions inside the reactor and final phenol conversion. These results demonstrate the importance of selecting kinetic parameters carefully particularly when these predictions are used for reactor design.

  • Being the origin of Shanghai City, the Old Town presents a high-density spatial texture, a characteristic of local living conditions in the Shanghai context. However, the Old Town is faced with competing interests: the preservation of historic urban features and the improvement of contemporary living conditions. In view of its high density and poor living conditions, this paper focuses on two types of blocks for urban design research, and proposes two spatial regeneration strategies, as "overlapping lilong" and "texture continuity". It is expected to inherit the regional characteristics of urban space, improve the plot ratio and supplement the mix of functions, through the translation of the traditional lilong typology and the reproduction of historical streets and alleys, so as to provide operable spatial strategies and design methods for the organic renewal of Old Town and other historic districts.

  • This study was to figure out the design characteristics of court housing type for the purpose of searching for the possibility of applying it to the housing design in Korea. In spite of changes of housing design condition in Korea, especially steep increase in density, there have been changes only in the height of housing block, not in the housing types, layout, spatial organization and other design properties. Due to such a situation, housing in Korea has been criticised as too high, monotonous one - especially types of housing block tend to be fixed into a slab block and a point block. As one of the alternatives to respond to the criticism, this study focused on the positive aspects of the court housing type, and suggested the design direction throughout the analysis of 8 entries in the design competition of EunPyeong New Town, which attempted to overcome the negative problems - mainly the daylighting, orientation, and privacy - and tried to maximize the positive properties of this type of housing.

  • Axial Field Permanent Magnet (AFPM) generators are widely applied for the small wind turbine because of the higher power density per unit weight than that of the conventional radial field generator. It is caused by the disc shaped rotor and the stator structures. The generally used AFPM generator, AFER-NS generator, is composed of the two side's external rotors and non-slotted stator without stator core. However, the output voltage and the output power are limited by the large reluctance by the long air-gap flux paths. In this paper, the design study of AFIR-S generator having double side's slotted stator core is accomplished to improve the output generation characteristics. The electromagnetic design analysis and the design improvement of the suggested AFIR-S generator are studied. Firstly, the electromagnetic design analysis was done to increase the power density. Secondly, the design optimizations of the rotor pole-arc ratio of permanent magnet are accomplished to increase the output power and to reduce the cogging torque. Finally, the output performances of AFER-NS and AFIR-S generator are compared with each other. For this study, 3D FEA is applied for the design analysis because of three dimensional electromagnetic structures.

  • This paper focuses on the design of a flux-biased rotary electromagnetic actuator with compact structure for fast steering mirror (FSM). The actuator has high force density and its torque output shows linear dependence on both excitation current and rotation angle. Benefiting from a new electromagnetic topology, no additional axial force is generated and an armature with small moment of inertia is achieved. To improve modeling accuracy, the actuator is modeled with flux leakage taken into account. In order to achieve an FSM with good performance, a design methodology is presented. The methodology aims to achieve a balance between torque output, torque density and required coil magnetomotive force. By using the design methodology, the actuator which will be used to drive our FSM is achieved. The finite element simulation results validate the design results, along with the concept design, magnetic analysis and torque output model.

  • There are four parameters (i.e. overall density, local density, grouping, layout complexity) to consider in designing screen of a visual display terminal. Among these, only the optimum level of overall density is known to be about 25~30% by some studies. Therefore, the present experiment is conducted to define the optimum levels of the other parameters to achieve the user's best performance in visual search task. The results are as follows; (1) The function related to the levels of local density and user's search times is shown to be U -shaped. When the level of local density is about 40%, the search time is shorter than those of any other levels. (2) In the experiment of grouping, user's performance is best when the number of group is 5, and the size of group does not exceed visual angle $5^{\circ}$ (0,088rad). (3) The user performance is improved as the layout becomes less complex.
