  • Integral imaging is a three-dimensional display method which has full parallax and continuous viewpoints. However, we found an error between the depth expressed by integral imaging and the depth perceived by the observer through binocular disparity. We analyze the depth perception errors of the threedimensional image constructed by integral imaging.

  • It is well known that high-resolution 3D movie contents frequently do not deliver the identical 3D perception to low-resolution 3D images. For solving this problem, we propose a novel method that produces a new stereoscopic image based on depth map transformation using the spatial complexity of an image. After analyzing the depth map histogram, the depth map is decomposed into multiple depth planes that are transformed based upon the spatial complexity. The transformed depth planes are composited into a new depth map. Experimental results demonstrate that the lower the spatial complexity is, the higher the perceived video quality and depth perception are. As well, visual fatigue test showed that the stereoscopic images deliver less visual fatigue.

  • Recently, advancement in the visual technology has lead to the further development of the three dimensional (3D) imaging systems. The visual perception to view a pair of images simultaneously, is a crucial factor to build a stereoscopic 3D image. In this paper, we present the depth cues between the intensities of the two images when viewing with both eyes. Due to this stereoscopic effect, objects at different distances from the eyes differ in their horizontal positions, giving the depth cue of horizontal disparity. By simple image processing technique, we also present the binocular disparity map between the two images. A median filter has been used to filter out all the noises occurring in the disparity map image.

  • The purpose of this research was to reveal how Korean food is currently perceived by the "foodies" of New York City and to determine what social status Korean food has in the city that is deemed the "Restaurant Capital of the World." In-depth personal interviews were performed to provide a deeper insight into the comments and subject matters. Most foodies selected kimchi and Korean barbecue as the most distinctive foods in Korean dining. Korean food's distinguishing traits were extracted in four areas: specific ingredients and tools, preparation procedures, and rules. Sensory characteristics, local adaptation, service, side dishes, and the main strengths and short-comings of Korean foods were investigated. Perception toward the taste of Korean food was generally positive, but poor quality of service and lack of organization in establishments were found to be negative factors.

  • The purposes of this study are to examine the participation of leisure activities for elementary school children and to analyze the children's and their mother's perception about their leisure activities. The data for the analysis are collected by the structured questionnaire and in-depth interview, The data for 106 children and their mothers living in Incheon city are analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The result of this study is summarized as follows: First, the most frequent leisure activities participated by children were hobby and culture activities such as attending institutes or receiving private tutoring. The most prefer leisure activities of children were computer related activities, watching TV and playing with friends According to the in-depth interview, these activities contributed to getting rid of stress and relaxing tension. Second, among the various activities, children tented to perceive computer related activities, roller-binding, paper folding, reading and watching TV as the leisure activities. There was no significant difference in the perception of leisure activities between mother and children except paper folding and reading. Third, the 55.7% of mother responded that the leisure activities that they were participated in childhood were more desirable compared with their children's ones.

  • The goal of 3D stereoscopy is not only to maximize positive experiences (such as sense of realism) by adding depth information to 2D video but to also minimize negative experiences (such as fatigue). This study examines the impact of different depth levels induced by adjusting 3D camera convergences on positive and negative experiences and finds an optimal parameter for viewers. The results show that there are significant differences among depth levels on spatial involvement, realistic immersion, presence, depth perception, screen transmission, materiality, shape perception, spatial extension and display perception. There are also significant differences for fatigue and unnaturalness. This study suggests that reducing the camera convergence angle of an object by $0.17^{\circ}$ behind the object is the optimal parameter in a 3D stereoscopic setting.

  • Although motion impression is weak with isoluminant color stimuli, it has been shown that color signals influence motion perception. We discuss similarities and differences between color motion and luminance motion, focusing on temporal characteristics of the perception of the 2D and 3D motion.

  • This paper reports a depth-adaptive sharpness adjustment algorithm for stereoscopic perception improvement, and presents its field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation results. The first step of the proposed algorithm was to estimate the depth information of an input stereo video on a block basis. Second, the objects in the input video were segmented according to their depths. Third, the sharpness of the foreground objects was enhanced and that of the background was maintained or weakened. This paper proposes a new sharpness enhancement algorithm to suppress visually annoying artifacts, such as jagging and halos. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve stereoscopic perception without intentional depth adjustments. In addition, the hardware architecture of the proposed algorithm was designed and implemented on a general-purpose FPGA board. Real-time processing for full high-definition stereo videos was accomplished using 30,278 look-up tables, 24,553 registers, and 1,794,297 bits of memory at an operating frequency of 200MHz.

  • This research analyzes users' cognitive responses to Out-Of-Home advertising content based in virtual environments. Specifically, it distinguishes the depth of advertisements as 2D or 3D and categorizes animation effects of light as a representation of virtuality into 'none', 'blinking', and 'flowing'. For this purpose, virtual reality content was developed, and after experiencing the content while wearing HMD, users' cognitive responses were investigated. Involving 60 participants, the study found that the interaction effects between depth perception and animation effects were not statistically significant, nor was the primary effect of depth perception. However, the main effect of animation showed statistically significant differences in users' attention, vividness, perceived intrusiveness, avoidance tendency, and flow. This study presents design elements that can be utilized in the production of virtual environment-based Out-Of-Home advertising and experimentally demonstrates that animation effects can serve as an effective means of emphasis in virtual environment advertising. These findings provide important insights for the creation and strategic planning of advertisements in virtual environments.
