  • In order to control thermal deformation of the machine origin of machine tools a empirical model and a compensation system have been developed, Prior to empirical modeling the volumetric error considering shape errors and joint errors of slides is formulated through the homogeneous transformation matrix (HTM) and kinematic chain. Simulation results of the HTM method show that the thermal error of the machine origin is more critical than position-dependent errors. In order to make a stable and effective software error compensation system the GMDH (Group Method of Data Handling) models are constructed to estimate the thermal deformation of the machine origin by measuring deformation data and temperature data. A test bar and gap sensors are used to measure the deformation data. In order to compensate the estimated error the work origin shift method is developed by implementing a digital I/O interface board between a CNC controller and an IBM PC. The method shifts the work origin as much as the amounts which are calculated by the pre-established thermal error model. The experiment results for a vertical machining center show that the thermal deformation of the machine origin is reduced within $\pm$5$mu extrm{m}$.

  • In Human Reliability Analysis(HRA), the uncertainties involved in many factors that affect human reliability have to be represented as the quantitative forms. Conventional probability- based human reliability theory is used to evaluate the effect of those uncertainties but it is pointed out that the actual human reliability should be different from that of conventional one. Conventional HRA makes use of error rates, however, it is difficult to collect data enough to estimate these error rates, and the estimates of error rates are dependent only on engineering judgement. In this paper, the error possibility that is proposed by Onisawa is used to represent human reliability, and the error possibility is obtained by use of fuzzy reasoning that plays an important role to clarify the relation between human reliability and human error. Also, assuming these factors are connected to the top event through Fault Tree structure, the influence and correlation of these factors are measured by fuzzy operation. When a fuzzy operation is applied to Fault Tree Analysis, it is possible to simplify the operation applying the logic disjuction and logic conjuction to structure function, and the structure of human reliability can be represented as membership function of the top event. Also, on the basis of the the membership function, the characteristics of human reliability can be evaluated by use of the concept of pattern recognition.

  • Radar rainfall estimates have been widely used in calculating rainfall amount approximately and predicting flood risks. The radar rainfall estimates have a number of error sources such as beam blockage and ground clutter hinder their applications to hydrological flood forecasting. Moreover, it has been reported in paper that those errors are inter-correlated spatially and temporally. Therefore, in the current study, we tested influence about spatio-temporal errors in radar rainfall estimates. Spatio-temporal errors were simulated through a stochastic simulation model, called Multivariate Autoregressive (MAR). For runoff simulation, the Nam River basin in South Korea was used with the distributed rainfall-runoff model, Vflo. The results indicated that spatio-temporal dependent errors caused much higher variations in peak discharge than spatial dependent errors. To further investigate the effect of the magnitude of time correlation among radar errors, different magnitudes of temporal correlations were employed during the rainfall-runoff simulation. The results indicated that strong correlation caused a higher variation in peak discharge. This concluded that the effects on reducing temporal and spatial correlation must be taken in addition to correcting the biases in radar rainfall estimates. • A family of the structure-dependent methods seems very promising for time integration since it can simultaneously have desired numerical properties, such as unconditional stability, second-order accuracy, explicit formulation and numerical dissipation. However, an unusual overshoot, which is essentially different from that found by Goudreau and Taylor in the transient response, has been experienced in the steady-state response of a high frequency mode. The root cause of this unusual overshoot is analytically explored and then a remedy is successfully developed to eliminate it. As a result, an improved formulation of this family method can be achieved.

  • This paper deals with an optimal process control problem in production of hull structural steel plate with high defective rate. The main quality characteristic(dependent variable) is the internal quality(defect) of plates and is dependent on process parameters(independent variables). The dependent variable(quality characteristics) has three categorical ordinal data and there are 35 independent variables(29 continuous variables and 6 categorical variables). In this paper, we determine the main factors and to develop the mathematical model between internal quality predicted probabilities and the main factors. Secondly, we find out the optimal process condition of main factors through analysis of variance(ANOVA) using simulation. We consider three models to obtain the main factors and the optimal process condition: linear, quadratic, error models.

  • A new finite difference model is developed for solute transport in a fractured medium that can consider advection, adsorption, first-order decay, and scale-dependent dispersivity of individual fractures. In the model, the dispersivity of individual fractures is employed as a variable increasing with travel distance from a source. The model is verified using an analytical solution for a single fracture. A solution from the new model is independent of the outlet boundary condition of fractures, and has little numerical dispersion error.

  • In this paper, nonstationary multiple sampling plans are discussed which are difficult to solve by analytical method when there exists dependency between the sample data. The initial solution is found by the sequential sampling plan using the sequential probability ration test. The number of acceptance and rejection in each step of the multiple sampling plan are found by grouping the sequential sampling plan's solution initially. The optimal multiple sampling plans are found by simulation. Four search methods are developed U and the optimum sampling plans satisfying the Type I and Type ll error probabilities. The performance of the sampling plans is measured and their algorithms are also shown. To consider the nonstationary property of the dependent sampling plan, simulation method is used for finding the lot rejection and acceptance probability function. As a numerical example Markov chain model is inspected. Effects of the dependency factor and search methods are compared to analyze the sampling results by changing their parameters.

  • A method to compensate a bias hysteresis error of the ring laser gyro using the rate of temperature is proposed in this paper. Until now, we generally have measured and compensated the error of gyro and accelerometer using the temperature. However, we utilize the measured values of the temperature dependent error elements on the temperature rate in navigation system level. We show through experiments that the proposed method can improve the navigation performance and be very effective.

  • In recent years, world is faced with a transportation energy dilemma, and the transportation is dependent on a single fuel - petroleum. However, Hybrid Electric Vehicle(HEV) technology holds more advantages to reduce the demand for petroleum in the transportation by efficiency improvements of petroleum consumption. Therefore, there is a trend that lower gear noise levels are demanded in HEV for drivers to avoid annoyance and fatigue during operation. And meshing transmission error(T.E.) is the excitation that leads to the tonal noise known as gear whine, and radiated gear whine is also the dominant source of noise in the whole gearbox. This paper presents a method for the analysis of gear tooth profile and lead modification, and the predictions of transmission error and load distribution are shown under one loaded torque for the 1st gear pair of HEV gearbox. The test is also obtained before tooth micro-modification under the torque. At last, the appropriate tooth modification is used to minimize the transmission error and load distribution under the loaded torque. It is a good approach which the simulated result is used to improve the design in order to minimize the radiation gear whine noise.

  • The object of this work is to develop the measurement method of the transmission error of the helical gears. For this purpose, experimental set up is designed by 3D CAD software. It consists of the motor, inverter, powdered brake equipment, torque sensor and helical gearbox. In this study, tangential linear accelerometers were used as the methods for the transmission error measurement. the acceleration signals are transmitted to the signal conditioners through the slip rings and the transmission errors are obtained by a specially designed circuit board. The transmission errors are analyzed in the frequency domain. As a result, The periodicity of the transmission error is confirmed in the mesh frequency and its harmonics. The magnitude of harmonic components is very dependent on the natural frequencies of the gear system. It usually increases with the rotational speed. However, it does not always increase with torque.
