Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find out the fear of dentist care, subjective recognition of dental health, and quality of life in the male high school students and to analyze the influencing factors on dental health care. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 243 special high-school in Deagu province from March 3 to March 14, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(5 questions), subjective recognition of health and activities to improve health(6 questions), dental fear(20 questions), oral health related quality of life(16 questions). The instrument for dental fear was adapted from measured by Berggren Dental Fear Survey(DFS). A total of 20 DFS questions included treatment avoidance(8 questions), stimulus reaction(6 questions), and physiological reaction(5 questions) and score by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach alpha was 0.974 in the study. Oral health related quality of life was measured by 16 questions of CPQ11-14 for the adolescents by Lau. CPQ11-14 consisted of oral symptoms(4 questions), functional restriction(4 questions), and emotional wellbeing(4 questions). The instrument was score by Likert 5 scale and Cronbach alpha was 0.9354 in the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program for ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Results: Fear of dentist care showed significant differences in treatment avoidance factor(p<0.001), stimulus reaction factor (p<0.05), and physiological reaction factor(p<0.001). The factors depended on subjective recognition of health and health-improving activities and differences in treatment avoidance factor(p<0.05) and physiological reaction factor(p<0.01). The dental symptoms factors showed significant differences in health recognition(p<0.001), interest in health(p<0.001), alcohol drinking status(p<0.001) and regular meal(p<0.001). While function limit factors showed differences in health recognition (p<0.001), interest in health(p<0.001), smoking(p<0.001), alcohol drinking(p<0.001) and regular meal(p<0.001). Mental and social stabilities factors showed significant differences in health recognition(p<0.001), interest in health(p<0.001) and alcohol drinking status(p<0.001). Among the factors influencing on the quality of life in dental health, interest in health(p<0.005), alcohol drinking(p<0.005) and physiological reaction in the midst of fear of dentist care(p<0.001) were the significant impact factor. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop a continuous and systematical program of dental health and dental care by experts so that the students can reduce the fear of dentist care by regular dental checkup and preventive treatment and care.
Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the formation of dental hygienist images based on the pathways of obtaining occupational information and to establish a foundation for the correct perception and positive promotion of the dental hygienist profession. Methods: A survey was distributed to 305 college preparatory students in the metropolitan area. The questionnaire consisted of 34 items, including general characteristics(3 items), pathway-related questions(3 items), dental hygienist image-related question(2 1items), application-related questions(2 items), and admission-related questions(5 items). The images of dental hygienists based on general characteristics, perception pathways, and admission were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The survey results from all participants showed that the overall image of dental hygienists was 3.75 points. Personal image scored the highest at 4.18 points, while social image was the lowest at 3.20 points(p<0.05). The overall image of dental hygienists was higher for the 'online' group (3.88) compared to the 'offline' group, and statistically significant differences were observed among groups in overall, personal, and professional images(p<0.05). The overall image of dental hygienists was higher for those who learned offline (3.87), and the only significant difference between groups was seen in the personal image. When it came to admission, the 'admitted' students gave a higher overall score (4.00) compared to 'non-admitted' students (3.64), with significance found in all areas except for social image (p<0.05). Conclusion: It is believed that effective utilization of online pathways can inform more people about the importance and expertise of dental hygienists, thereby contributing to promoting oral health and enhancing the perception of the profession. Properly valuing and educating about the role of dental hygienists through promotion and education can help improve the image of the profession.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze relationship between oral health status and subjective oral malodor awareness of public health students. Furthermore, this study aimed to recognize the importance of prevention and treatment of internal and external factors and to contribute to the correct oral health management behavior. Methods: The study subjects were 500 students from 5 health departments of 2 universities located in Jeollanamdo who participated in self-administered survey from September 1 to 15, 2014. For statistical analysis, SPSS 21.0 for Windows was used. Descriptive analysis and a Chi-square test were conducted to investigate the effects of general characteristics, health behavior, oral health behavior, and oral health status on subjective oral malodor awareness. Finally, to investigate the relationship between oral health status and subjective oral malodor awareness logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: Subjective oral malodor awareness was significantly higher in the group requiring dental care with the score of 1.63 (95% CI 1.00-2.65) compared to the group not requiring dental care. Subjective oral malodor awareness was significantly higher in the severe coated tongue group with the score of 5.31 (95% CI 1.45-19.40) and significantly higher in the moderate coated tongue group with the score of 2.56 (95% CI 1.61-4.08). Subjective oral malodor awareness was significantly higher in the often mouth breathing group with the score of 2.13 (95% CI 1.02-4.47) and significantly higher in the sometimes mouth breathing group with the score of 2.66 (95% CI 1.65-4.29). Conclusions: In order to prevent oral malodor, it is emphasized that regular dental checkups, proper brushing after the meal, and brushing of the tongue are necessary to remove the coated tongue. In addition, the use of supplementary oral care products is considered to be a meaningful oral health behavior.
The purpose of this study was to examine the needs of dental hygiene students at a lifelong education center of a three-year-course college for a credit bank system. The subjects in this study were 200 dental hygiene students at a college located in J, which offered courses of a credit bank system. A survey was conducted from May 19 to 23, 2008, to gather data on the acquisition of a bachelor's degree and the credit bank system, and the answer sheets from 184 respondents(92%) were collected. After the collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 12.0 program, the following findings were given: 1. In regard to an intention of taking a bachelor's degree, the largest number of the students investigated(74.5%) intended to do that if they had any chance. As for the reason, 55.6% wanted to get the degree in pursuit of their own personal development. 2. Concerning how to win a bachelor's degree, the largest group that accounted for 63.0% preferred the credit bank systems of college lifelong education centers. 41.8% got interested in the credit bank system mainly because their acquaintances informed them of it. It shows that colleges should reinforce publicity activities if they want to offer the credit bank system. 3. The quality of educational programs and cost had an impact on the choice of an educational institution when they planned to get a bachelor's degree from the credit bank system. Therefore excellent educational programs should be provided, and the government should provide learners with economic help and fund educational institutions. 4. As to comparison of a regular college and the credit bank system as a way to get a bachelor's degree, that was considered to be helpful for finding a job(a mean of 3.39) and for the development of sociability(3.22). That was also deemed to be of use for the improvement of practical job performance, to win public recognition and to be helpful for being well-cultivated, though not many students had those opinions. They took a different view according to academic year(p<.05). 5. Regarding the expected effects of getting a degree from the credit bank system, the greatest group expected it to step up their personal development(3.85). The second largest group expected it to boost job efficacy(3.30), and the students whose academic year was higher had a better opinion. 6. As for future directions for the credit bank system, the largest group put emphasis on the improvement of social perception through intensive P.R. and the enhancement of the qualifications of professors and lecturers(4.02). These opinions were more stressed by the juniors than by the sophomores and seniors, and academic year made a significant difference to their views(p<.05).
The purpose of this study was to investigate the applicability of project - based learning as a teaching method for 'Dental Hygiene Practice' in the community dental hygiene department at G city S university. The subjects were 30 students in the fourth grade in 2018. Data collection period was from March 12 to June 27, and mean and standard deviation were compared using SPSS 20.0 program. The results of the analysis showed that the score of the team with high team performance was high ($3.91{\pm}0.82$), the students were required to practice ($4.10{\pm}0.88$), and the feedback from the professor ($3.73{\pm}0.86$) Satisfaction was high. It was determined that the application of project - based learning classes in the 'Community Dental Hygienic Field Practice' course was appropriate for the class.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the participation attitude of students toward pre-clinical practicums, their satisfaction with the practicums and related stress, and to investigate the influential factors for their participation attitude to practicums. Methods : The subjects in this study were three different groups of students who took pre-clinical practicums at different times. One group of students who entered college in 2008 took a practicum in December, 2009, and another group of students who entered college in 2009 took a practicum in June, 2010. The third group of students who entered college in 2010 took a practicum in June, 2011. Results : 1. As for participation attitude, the students who completed a practicum before they underwent field training in the second semester of their sophomore year got a higher mark of 3.44(p<0.05). 2 Concerning the operation of practicum, they felt a lot of stress when they took a practicum before they underwent field training in the first semester of their sophomore year and when they had no dental experience(p<0.001). 3. Regarding satisfaction with practicum, they scored higher when they took a practicum before they underwent field training in the second semester of their sophomore year(p<0.05). And the students who were more gratified with dental experience expressed better satisfaction(p<0.001). 4. As to the influential factors for the participation attitude of the students, those who were more satisfied with the content of practicum, the operation of practicum and evaluation took a more positive participation attitude(p<0.001). More stress about the operation of practicum and more stress about evaluation exerted a greater negative influence on participation attitude(p<0.05). Conclusions : Given the findings of the study, a pre-clinical practicum should be offered before field training is provided in the second semester of the sophomore year in order to ensure the efficiency of education, and a wide variety of information should be offered so that students could gain dental experience before they take a practicum.
With the change into knowledge-based society and infinite competition, sharp employment competition causes anxiety about their own future among college students going into society, consequently making their employment one of the greatest social problems. As schemes of improving the employment rate for seniors at the department of health science, department professors are required to reinforce employment-related interviews as a provider of information about employment and colleges need to set and implement a specific support plan, for example, by encouraging trips for employment guidance at diverse regions. As an effort for qualitative improvement, colleges are required to develop an employment-based curriculum and support basic employment preparations and academic advisers need to serve as a guide specializing in employment as well as an employment-related information provider.

This study aimed to investigate and compare the perception of personal protective equipments and instrument sterilization of students who are in attendance at colleges and universities and which have bedside training as a regular subject in their curriculum for third-year students. 'Completely True' is the highest response to the question about the importance of wearing gloves, mask and medical gown from all groups. 'Completely True' is the highest response to the question about the necessity for replacement of gloves from all groups. 'Moderate True' is the highest response to the question about the necessity for replacement of mask from the group without practical training and 'Completely True' is the highest response to the question about the importance of hair cleanliness from all groups regardless of practical training experience. For the question about the perception of instrument disinfection and sterilization, the group with inside and outside practical training showed the highest perception level. Consequently, the right education for prevention of infection by setting inclusive guidelines to enhance the level of perception and practice seems continuously necessary.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to analyze 356 papers included in the Journal of the Korean Society of Dental Hygiene between 2000 when the initial number was issued and April, 2010. The papers involved articles, treatises, theses and dissertations. Methods : According to existing literature related to paper analysis, all the journals were analyzed by year to find out the subjects of the studies, places for data gathering, the presence or absence of research funds supplied, the number of researchers, research methods, methods of data collection, themes and data analysis methods. Results : As for subjects, the largest group of the papers that numbered 69(20.7%) examined dental hygienists, and the second biggest group that numbered 65(19.5%) examined dental hygienists and students. The third greatest group that numbered 47(14.2%) examined patients at dental hospitals and clinics. Concerning places of data gathering, schools(37.1%) were the most common places where data were collected, followed by dental hospitals/clinics(31.6%) and laboratories(7.4%). In terms of research design, research studies accounted for 88.5%, and experimental studies accounted for 11.5%. Research studies were far more prevalent. Concerning themes, there were 76 kinds of concepts that the studies dealt with, and the most dominant concepts were oral health awareness and behavior, which 34 studies focused on(9.6%). 10 studies or more were concerned with dental service, oral health status, dental hygiene education, infection control, oral health education, job satisfaction and stress. As to data analysis methods, frequency analysis was most dominant, followed by Chi-square test, t-test, analysis of variance, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and regression analysis. Most of the studies made use of quantitative research methods. Conclusions : The effort by this study to analyze the papers included in the Journal of the Korean Society of Dental Hygiene to grasp research trends in the field of dental hygiene is expected to be of some use for the determination of the right directions of dental hygiene research in the future.
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of self-perception of halitosis on oral health behaviors of college students according to whether they worked in a non-service or service-related job. Methods: A self-reporting questionnaire of 150 university students working in service jobs and 150 university students working in non-service jobs in the metropolitan area was conducted from 26th April to 5th May 2018. The survey tool consisted of 3 general topic areas. There were 5 questions on oral health awareness behavior, 3 questions related to their self-perception of halitosis, and 8 questions on their oral health care practice. All were measured on the Likert 5-point scale. The frequency of their oral health behaviors and their self-perception of halitosis were analyzed according to the subjects' occupation. Pearson's correlation analysis and a linear regression analysis were conducted to confirm the influence of the two. The significance level for the statistical significance test was set to α = 0.05 (two-tailed). Results: In both the service and non-service groups, a coated tongue and food debris were found to influence halitosis(x2=10.95, p=0.027). According to the t-test, taking into account the self-perception of halitosis and oral health behaviors, both were higher in those that had a service job. Self-perception of halitosis and oral health behaviors were found to have a negative correlation(γ=-0.11, p<0.05). As the self-perception of halitosis increased, oral health care practices also increased(Beta=-0.185, p=0.020). Conclusions: Systematic interventions such as oral health programs and health promotion are needed to improve the oral health of service workers.
