It has passed 40 years since dental hygiene was introduced to Korea. At this time, We hereby demonstrate the findings from the survey on the academic definition and developmental direction of dental hygiene. This survey has been conducted on dental hygiene majoring students, dental clinic hygienists of health & medical care and related professors in the dental field. The findings show that there exists a big disparity in defining the academic scope of dental hygiene among students, clinical dental hygienists of health & medical care and university professors. Accordingly, we suggest that the academic scope of dental hygiene should be explained in a uniform definition. In addition, the results of this survey suggest that they feel that the status of dental hygiene is really behind other study fields, in view of such high response thereto. For development of dental hygiene study and enhancement of its social status, the joint professional study by private, government and scholars should be immediately promoted and a wide variety of programs for dental hygiene should be continuously implemented under the auspices of government and academic world.
This study was conducted to induce changes in the correct oral hygiene management habits and attitudes of university students by grasping the relationship between oral hygiene status and of self-perception halitosis of university students, and to present basic data to improve oral health. The data survey was conducted on 322 university students under the age of 23 among the participants who visited the department of dental hygiene at K University in Daejeon for practice from September 23, 2019 to December 6, 2019. The degree of dental deposition was grade B, the patient hygiene performance index was 'normal' and the amount of tongue plaque was 'good' the highest, and the factors that were highly related to self-perception halitosis were the amount of tongue plaque and were dental deposits rating and grade. Also, oral hygiene status and self-perception halitosis were correlated with each other, and it was found that oral hygiene status had an important effect on self-perception halitosis. Therefore, it is necessary to actively develop interesting and practical oral health care programs and publicity plans so that the quality of life of oral health for university students can be improved.

As the level of the national income has been improved and the whole nation health insurance project has been spread, medical demand for dental health is also increasing. To cope with the increased medical demand, the need of dental health education and preventive dental care is recognized, and the number of dental hygienists is being increased with increase in dental clinics and hospitals. While more weight is actually given to treatment than prevention in hospitals, emphasis is placed on prevention in public health centers of state-run organizations and dental hygienists are performing the duty. According to this, dental hygienists shall be treated and recognized as professionals, who instruct people in dental health and assist the dentists in hospitals. Therefore to suggest vision to the students of department of dental hygiene, give them a solid motive, and inspire them with professional sense so that they can devote themselves to their duty with pride and self-confidence in the field can lead to contribution to dental health of each individual and the whole nation, in order to train them to be dental hygienists who are active and strive for change and development as professionals and capable of adapting themselves to the field of dental medicine.
