Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness in oral health promotion through oral health education for freshmen students of the dental hygiene department. Methods: To verify its effectiveness, research was conducted on 74 freshmen of the dental hygiene department by the evaluation of DMFT index, PHP index, and Cariview test (2015-2016). Results: The analysis of the test results using Cariview equipment shows a categorization of low risk group consisting of 10 students (13.5%), middle risk group consisting of 47 students (63.5%), and a high risk group consisting of 17 students (22.9%). DT index according to the number of daily tooth brushing by <2 is DT index average score higher and in such a case, statistics are considered meaningful (p<0.01). Oral health state at DMFT index of low risk group according to Cariview risk group for an analysis is lower than both the middle risk group and the high risk group (p<0.001). Conclusions: A review of the effect of the promotion of oral health through oral health education on the behavior change rather than of Cariview test and value of dental plaque through tooth brushing method was conducted.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of resilience on academic stress in dental hygiene students focused on the mediating effects of self-esteem. Methods: The subjects in this study were 208 selected dental hygiene students in colleges located in Y region of U city. This study aimed to assess dental hygiene students' and other medical personnel's knowledge of dental hygienists' legal responsibilities. A self-reported questionnaire was conducted for 2 weeks from March 25 to April 9, 2017. One of the main questions focused on the legal scope of practice for dental hygienists according to current medical technicians. A total of 298 subjects' responses were analyzed. We found that 62.1% of the respondents were aware of dental hygienists' legal responsibilities. Of the dental hygiene students surveyed, 93.6% replied that they were aware of other medical personnel's expectations. Responses to 12 legal questions were shown to have different distributions depending upon the level of dental hygienist education. Overall, knowledge of dental hygienist legal responsibilities was more comprehensive for senior students in each legal topic. However, few students (1.7%) answered all 12 legal questions correctly. In conclusion, dental hygiene students' awareness of their profession's legal scope should be improved. In addition, the Korean Dental Hygienists Association needs to more actively promote understanding of the profession's legal scope as well as of medical personnel's expectations of dental hygienists' legal roles.
Objectives: This study investigates dropout intention and the structural relationship between the dental hygienist role and satisfaction with the study major perceived by dental hygiene students. Methods: A survey was conducted on 269 dental hygiene students. The survey items covered general characteristics, department choice motivation, the desirability of dental hygienist career, practice clinical experience, perception of dental hygienist role, satisfaction with study major, and dropout intention. Independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test, multiple linear regression analysis, and structural equation modeling were used for statistical analysis. Results: The dropout intention level of dental hygiene students was 2.4 out of 5.0. Satisfaction with study major partially mediates perception of dental hygienist role and dropout intention (direct effect=0.182, p=0.024, indirect effect=-0.437, p=0.010). Perception of dental hygienist role (β=-0.255, p=0.010) and satisfaction with study major (β=-0.661, p=0.010) showed a negative relationship with dropout intention. The factor most affecting dropout intention was satisfaction with study major. Dropout intention was high when selecting a major based on external motivations (β=-0.448, p<0.001). Conclusions: Perception of dental hygienist role and satisfaction with study major directly or indirectly affect dropout intention. Therefore, improving satisfaction with study major and improving the perception of dental hygienists will help reduce dropout intention.
