To see whether there would be any differences in subjective oral health awareness according to general characteristics and denture-related characteristics, $x^2$-test was carried out, and t-test or one-way ANOVA involving Duncan post-hoc analysis was utilized to look for any possible gaps in denture satisfaction according to those characteristics. Results : 1. Concerning oral health awareness by general characteristics, there were significant differences according to gender and the form of health insurance subscription. 2. As for subjective oral health awareness by denture-related characteristics, there were significant gaps according to denture-washing frequency. 3. Regarding denture satisfaction by general characteristics, there were significant differences in satisfaction with denture fixation according to living arrangements. 4. As to denture satisfaction by denture-related characteristics, there were significant differences in satisfaction with mastication and with fixation according to the type of denture. 5. Better subjective oral health awareness led to better satisfaction with mastication, better satisfaction with fixation and better aesthetic satisfaction. 6. In relation to subjective oral health awareness and denture satisfaction, that had a significant relationship to satisfaction with mastication and with fixation. Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings showed that the denture satisfaction of the denture-wearing senior citizens was linked to their subjective oral health awareness. Therefore it will be possible to improve denture-wearing elderly people's quality of life when oral health plans geared toward boosting their denture satisfaction are carried out.

There are many factors influencing on the satisfaction of the complete denture patients. The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between the masticatory satisfaction and clinical evaluation, and the speech satisfaction and clinical evaluation in complete denture patients. 79 patients(total 119 complete dentures) were examined in this study who were treated in Seoul National University Dental Hospital. Through clinical evaluation, 2 examiners evaluated sex, age, edentulous period, the years of having used present complete denture, the number of the previous dentures, the state of the opposite arch, retention, stability, support, occlusion, vertical dimension of the complete denture and the condition of the residual alveolar ridge. Through questionnaires concerned with mastication and speech, examiners evaluate the satisfaction degree of the patients. This study led to the conclusion that : 1. The satisfaction degree of the mastication was lower in older patients(p<0.001) and in patients whose present complete denture period was shorter(p<0.05). The satisfaction degree of the mastication in male was higher than in female patients(p<0.01). 2. The satisfaction degree of the mastication was high when the retention of the complete denture was good(p<0.05), and when the condition of the residual alveolar ridge was good(p<0.05). 3. The satisfacion degree of the speech was high when the retention of the complete denture was good(p<0.01). 4. The satisfaction degree of the mastication was higher in patients with upper and lower complete denture than in patients with single complete denture whose oppsite arch was unilateral partial denture(p<0.05).

  • PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sociodemographic factors on quality of satisfaction towards denture treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One hundred subjects (filling inclusion criteria) who were wearing a denture for at least two months were enrolled and divided into five groups on the basis of sociodemographic variables (age, gender, literacy level, socio-economic and marital status). Questionnaires consisting of 38 questions (positive and negative attitude towards denture satisfaction) related to patients' perception of clinical outcome in different domains such as mastication, appearance, speech, comfort, health, denture care and social status were scored by the subjects. Questions reflecting positive attitude were scored as 2, 1, or 0 (yes, uncertain and no, respectively) and reversely for the negative questions. Statistical analysis was done by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (${\alpha}$= .05). RESULTS. Level of denture satisfaction was higher in age subgroup belonging to 45 - 65 years of age in relation to comfort, health and denture care. Female and male showed significant priority for denture treatment because of esthetic and function respectively. Level of satisfaction was statistically significant with literacy level. Upper high income group showed significantly higher level of satisfaction only in case of social status. Married group showed significantly higher satisfaction level only with comfort. CONCLUSION. Patients' sociodemographic variables were influential factors on denture satisfaction.

Methods: The subjects were 143 elderly people from 60 to 75 years old wearing dentures and receiving consistent follow-up in the public health center in Busan. A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the elderly people from February 1 to March 1, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of denture satisfaction, social variables, and psychological variables. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 18.0. The sociodemographic characteristics included gender, age, and chronic diseases. The recognition of oral health included pronunciation, denture maintenance, mastication ability, and education for denture care. The questionnaire was measured by Likert 5 scale. Results: Gender, chronic disease, denture care instructions, and the self-preception of the oral health after denture treatment were closely correlated with denture satisfaction(p<0.001). Age and the number of repairs were very important factor to denture satisfaction(p<0.05). Elderly women were more satisfied with denture than men and those who had no chronic diseases tended to be more satisfied with denture. Those who received oral care instructions were more satisfied with the denture than those who did not. The younger age group and no repairing prosthetic group tended to be more satisfied with the denture. Conclusions: It is important to provide the denture management services to the low income elderly when they demand the services. The national dental health policy must be focused on connection of the elderly people denture services with the public health center.
