The purpose of this study was to investigate the status and views on the dental team composition and works, the experience of a dental manpower shortage and opinions on the solution. The subjects were 313 dentists and dental hygienists. The mobile questionnaires were conducted on the status of dental team composition and works, the experience of a dental manpower shortage and opinions on the solution. There was no big difference between the current dental team composition and ideal composition ratio, and dentists answered that it would be more ideal to reduce dental hygiene and increase nurse assistant when the working dentist was 3~5. 85.6% of the dentists and 56.4% of the dental hygienists had difficulty in employing the dental auxiliary personnel. The difficulty level was 8 out of 10 points among dentists and 5.7 points among dental hygienists. 91.1% of the dentists and 95.5% of the dental hygienists agreed on the necessity of expanding the dental hygienist's work. The dental works were temporary crown making and setting, surgical operation assistance, and overall dental assistance. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to continuously make efforts to communicate with the dental personnel in Korea to solve a lot of problems such as the job assignment, the dental personnel policy and system, and the work environment.

This study was conducted on industrial workers to develop an integrated health promotion program on chronic disease and oral health, and to provide basic data for an effective management plan by conducting comparison analysis of periodontal health status based on the findings of hypertension and diabetes disease, and by understanding of influencing factors on periodontal health status. And the study was conducted on 4,600 workers in certain areas from March 22, 2010 to June 18, 2010. The results of the study indicates significant difference by having high plaque and gingivitis ratio in the people who had the findings of hypertension and having high plaque ratio in the people who had the findings of diabetes disease. Regarding the influences on periodontal health status, gender, age, whether the subject visited a dental hospital, whether the subject had scaling treatment, smoking, and hypertension had influenced gingivitis. And gender, age, whether the subject visited a dental hospital, whether the subject had scaling treatment, smoking, and hypertension had influenced plaque. And the aforementioned 2 groups had statistically significant difference, and the conclusion is established that metabolic syndrome which is measured during the health exam of workers is an important disease potentially threatening the health of workers and also highly related to oral health.
Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of entrance exam stress on oral health behaviors and subjective oral health status in female high school students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was administered to 216 female high school students in the Gwangju area. We performed an independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The average of the entrance exam stress was 2.73, and among the sub-areas, the tension for exam/poor stress was the highest with 3.21. As a result of analysis of general characteristics and subjective oral health status, oral mucosal disease was lower in family income level (p<0.05), bad breath was significantly higher with lower academic performance (p<0.001) and family income level (p<0.05). As a result of oral health behavior and subjective oral health status analysis, dental caries has more than 4 times of caries snacks (per week) (p<0.05), bad breath was found to be more perceived when the average number of daily brushing was 2 or less (p<0.01). Factors affecting subjective oral health status were that dental caries was a patients pressure stress (β=0.202); temporomandibular disorder (β=0.227), xerostomia (β=0.342), and oral mucosal disease (β=0.190) were insufficient spare time; bad breath was academic performance (lower) (β=0.231) and insufficient spare time (β=0.184). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the subjective oral health status and the subarea of entrance exam stress, excluding future uncertainty stress. Conclusion: It is considered that oral health education should be conducted to prevent oral diseases for students with high parental pressure and insufficient spare time stress as well as finding practical ways to reduce entrance stress.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships among snack habits, oral health practice, and oral health status in preschool children. Methods: The subjects were 209 preschool children and their mothers in Jeonbuk from March 24 to May 30, 2014. The study instruments comprised snack habits, oral health practice, and oral health status. Data were analyzed for independent t-test, one way ANOVA and hierarchical multiple regression using SPSS Win 21.0 version. Results: Higher dft index was shown in the older age (p=0.033), lower mother's education (p<0.001), lower mother's daily toothbrushing (p<0.001), check-up after tooth-brushing (p<0.001), tooth-brushing practice before sleeping (p<0.001), tooth-brushing practice after snack (p<0.001), regular dental check-up (p<0.001), fluoride and sealant for prevention caries (p<0.001), limitation of sugar snack intake (p<0.007), periodic replacement toothbrush (p=0.022). The cause of higher dft index included soda (p<0.001), yogurt (p<0.001), snack (p=0.002), bread and cake (p=0.002) and caramel and candy (p<0.001). Fruit (p<0.001), vegetable (p<0.001) and milk (p=0.004) decreased dft index. Factors affecting oral health status were tooth-brushing practice before sleeping, tooth-brushing practice after snack, regular dental check-up, fluoride and sealant for prevention caries, and intake of soda, yogurt, caramel, candy, and fruit. The explanation power of the final model was 67.6%. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop the oral health education program for the preschool children and mothers to enhance the best oral health condition.
Objectives: This case study was conducted to assess the changes in the oral health status of older individuals with hearing and visual impairments through home oral health care based on community care. Methods: The participants were two older adults with hearing and visual impairments. Through home visits, an oral health intervention program, including oral hygiene care and training on strengthening of oral function, was conducted once a week for 5 months. Dental hygienists performed special oral health interventions such as dental plaque control through individual tooth brushing and interdental care, training on strengthening of intraoral and extraoral muscle function, and denture care for the individuals with visual-hearing impairments. Results: The overall periodontal health status and oral muscle function improved in older adults with hearing and visual impairments. In the case of the visually impaired individuals, changes in the oral health status were oral mucosal moisture (30.1 and 37.2 points before and after intervention, respectively), salivary secretion (3.5 and 4.0 cm before and after intervention, respectively), and maximum tongue pressure (20.5 and 26.2 kPa before and after intervention, respectively). Changes in the oral health status of the hearing impaired individuals increased from 28.3 points before the intervention to 38.4 points after the intervention, and the maximum tongue pressure increased from 1.85 kPa to 23.5 kPa after the intervention. Conclusions: Oral health intervention activities contributed to improving the periodontal health and oral function of older adults with hearing and visual impairments. To improve their overall and oral health, it is necessary to prepare measures to activate customized oral health intervention programs.
This study investigates the relationship between smoking and periodontal disease through quantitative analysis of intra-buccal oral pathogenic bacteria detected in smokers and aims to yield objective baseline data for applications in anti-smoking and dental health education programs. From April to May 2016, participants in an oral health management program within an intensive dental hygiene training course at Choonhae College of Health Sciences received an explanation of the study purposes and methods, after which male smokers aged 18~30 years agreed to participate voluntarily. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of oral pathogenic bacteria was performed after collecting gingival sulcus fluid samples from 67 smokers. The intra-buccal oral pathogenic bacteria distributions were analyzed based on the subjects' general characteristics, smoking behaviors, and oral care behaviors. The distribution results show that pathogens in the anterior teeth are affected (in this order) by age, toothbrush size, and smoking status; older people had fewer pathogens, those who used larger toothbrushes had more pathogens, and smokers had more pathogens, compared to non-smokers ($_{adj}R^2=19.1$). In the posterior teeth, pathogens were influenced (in this order) by smoking status, smoking duration, and the number of tooth brushings per day; smokers had more pathogens than non-smokers, and those who brushed their teeth more often had fewer pathogens ($_{adj}R^2=25.1$). The overall pathogen distribution was affected only by smoking status: smokers generally had more pathogens, compared to non-smokers. Therefore, it is necessary to provide information about the risk of periodontal disease due to smoking during anti-smoking or dental health education sessions; particularly, the use of smaller toothbrushes for anterior teeth and the need for smokers in their early twenties to quit smoking for dental health should be highly emphasized.
Background: Plastic waste generates pollutants in the process of incineration or landfilling, and accumulates in water or marine organisms, causing adverse effects on the environment and the human body. Recently, various eco-friendly oral hygiene products (Eco-OHPs) such as bamboo toothbrushes and biodegradable plastic toothbrushes have been developed. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the current level of awareness and purchasing status of eco-OHPs among adults who are interested in eco-friendly products. Methods: This study included adults aged >19 years who regularly visited eco-friendly shops and online sites; the online survey links were distributed during their visits to eco-friendly Internet cafés and companies. Of the 22 questions, seven assessed the participants' general characteristics, three assessed the general oral hygiene care products used, six assessed the level of awareness of Eco-OHPs, and six assessed the purchasing status of Eco-OHPs. Frequency analysis, chi-square test, and regression analysis were performed using SPSS software. Results: Among the respondents, 108 (51.4%) were aware of Eco-OHPs, and 79 (37.6%) had experience purchasing Eco-OHPs. The most common reason for not purchasing was the lack of information about related brands or products (74, 56.5%). The most common platform used in obtaining information was the Internet (general: 31.5%, eco-friendly: 46.3%), such as Social Network Service, Internet cafes, and blogs. The experience in purchasing Eco-OHPs was affected by whether the respondents recognized the possibility of contributing to environmental preservation, availability of vendors, product safety, and the number of eco-friendly products purchased. Conclusion: In order to expand the use of Eco-OHPs, various efforts such as promotion of eco-friendly characteristics, determination of related vendors, reliable analysis of product safety, and expansion of product experience opportunities are required.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between oral malodor and related factors in visitors to preventive dentistry practice lab. Methods: The subjects were selected from 71 visitors to preventive dentistry practice lab in a department of dental hygiene. The subjects were from twenty to twenty nine years old and had no systemic diseases or symptoms. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, oral malodor concentration, oral health status, oral health behavior, and self-rated oral malodor. Results: The mean concentration of the oral cavity gas was 50.80. The score of 50.80 was a weak smell by the selected judgement criteria. The oral malodor prevalence rate accounted for 39.1 percent and a weak smell was detected in 40 points. Those having higher oral malodor concentration tended to have lower self-rated oral health status(p<0.05). Conclusions: The results can not be generalized to determine the cause of oral malodor, but self-rated oral health status can be linked to systemic disease control. More investigation should be taken in order to analyzed the correlation between oral malodor and systemic diseases.
Objectives: This study investigated health behavior and nutritional status according to the presence or absence of periodontal disease using data from the Sixth National Health Nutrition Survey. Methods: Data from the 2013-2015 National Health Nutrition Survey were analyzed by frequency analysis, chi-square test, and Pearson's correlation analysis using SPSS 21.0. Results: Periodontal disease was more frequent in the group of patients who perceived that their subjective health status was "very bad" or were underweight according to the BMI classification. In men, periodontal disease occurred more frequently in those who were taking calcium (p<0.05), and periodontal disease occurred more frequently in the age group of 20-39, regardless of sex (p<0.05). In women, periodontal disease was less frequent in the group taking vitamin A. In both men and women, the presence of periodontal disease correlated with high fasting blood sugar and glycated hemoglobin levels. Conclusions: A customized program should be developed for each patient to identify factors that affect the relationship among periodontal disease, nutrient intake, and blood parameters. Such information will help improve the oral health of the population.
Objectives : The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the status and necessity of dental prosthesis and mastication function in the Korean elderly. Methods : This study investigated 4,557 elderly people aged over 65 in the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(2010-2012). Frequency analysis, ${\chi}^2$ test, and logistic regression analysis were used. Results : Those aged over 75 complained of greater discomfort in mastication function than those from 65 to 74, and it was statistically significant(p<0.001). Mastication discomfort was not so significant in those with higher education and higher income(p<0.001). Those who did not use prosthesis tended to have better mastication function(p<0.001). Denture users complained of mastication discomfort when they used it(p<0.001). Conclusions : This study verified the relationship between the discomfort in mastication and related factors, and will provide the basic data for the access to dental clinic services.
