Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the awareness towards employment in the dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 425 dental hygiene students in Chungcheongdo and Gyeongsangdo from July to September, 2014. Except incomplete answer, 401 data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 program. The questionnaire consisted of three questions of general characteristics of the subjects, nine questions of awareness towards employment, six questions of awareness of employment preparation, and eleven questions of awareness of employment outlook. Results: The dental hygiene students prefer to dental hygiene related institution including dental hospital, dental clinic, general hospital, and university hospital. The awareness for the knowledge of desired employment institution was average. The main access for the information of the employment was internet, and senior and professor's advice, The most important preparations for the employment were a practical skill, trust, certificate, license, communication skill and English proficiency. The future outlook for the dental hygienist within five years was not optimistic, and the best way to overcome the weka point was specialization of the dental hygienist. Conclusions: This study will provide the useful information on improvement of employment strategy program for dental hygiene students.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the influencing factors of subjective awareness of dental health status on the use of dental hygienic devices. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 320 patients who visited dental clinics in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from May to June 2014. Except incomplete answers, 284 copies were analyzed by SPSS WIN 18.0 program. The questionnaire was adapted from Park & Youn, and Chae. The questionnaire consisted of five questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, one question of subjective dental health status, eight questions of awareness of dental hygienic devices, and eight questions of use of dental hygienic devices. Results: Although the awareness of self dental health state was shown to statistically significantly affect the awareness of dental hygiene devices(p<0.001) which is the dependent variable, it was shown to not affect the use. Conclusions: Based on such results, to improve and maintain the dental health, an individual's subjective dental health state should be identified and provide accurate and objective information on the dental hygiene devices that are suitable to individual dental state, as well as make the patient's use of dental hygiene devices increase through continuous boosting of motivation.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the awareness and performance towards the dental radiation protection behaviors in dental institutions in Busan and Gyeongnam. Methods : Two hundred and one dental medical institutions in Busan and Gyeongnam participated in the survey from March 10 to April 4, 2014. The data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0 for ${\chi}^2$ test, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. Results : There were significant differences in the awareness and performance towards the radiation protection behaviors according to age, monthly income, and type of hospital(p<0.05). Protective equipment influenced on the awareness and performance of dental staff and patients(p<0.001). The important variables on dental radiation protection included protection facility and education of protective equipment. It is found the variable to affect the performance of dental radiation protection was protection facility, wearing of protective device staff and patients, education on RSM. Conclusions : These results can provide the basic data for the effective dental radiation safety management and improvement for the dental institutions.
Objectives: The objective of this study is to provide basic data needed in developing an educational program designed to upgrade capacity and awareness of preventive dental treatment among oral health workers, by analyzing levels of awareness of preventive dental treatment and educational needs among dentists and dental hygienists. Methods: The collected data was analyzed with SPSS program ver. 19.0. The data was under t-test. Results: The frequency level of giving preventive dental treatment to patients among dentists and dental hygienists is below mid-point, 3 on the 5-point Likert scale. In terms of frequency level per item, scaling & polishing was ranked the highest, followed by periodontal maintenance, tooth-brushing instruction, and prescription and instruction of oral care product in descending order. On the questions asking how important preventive dental care they perceive to be, both dentists and dental hygienists perceived it to be highly important. When they were asked to rank those items by the importance of education, they considered periodontal maintenance as the most important one, followed by individual education of oral health, incremental oral health care, scaling& polishing, toothbrushing instruction, and prescription and instruction of oral care product. Respondents pointed out problems in running a preventive dental treatment program as follows: overwork, lack of dedicated workforce, un-fixed costs, and lack of necessary equipment. When they were asked to point out items needed to run such a program, the largest number of respondents indicated dedicated workforce placement, followed by improving awareness of the customer, and improving awareness of the dental workers. Conclusions: In order to effectively run a preventive dental treatment program, it is necessary for oral health workers to clearly understand the concept of it. It is also necessary to develop and operate an education program on preventive dental treatment targeting oral health professionals.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the job awareness of dental hygiene students about a dental hygienist, what duties they wanted to do as dental hygienists, their awareness of college courses related to the job performance of dental hygienists and whether they viewed the courses as what's most widely utilized for the clinical job performance of dental hygienists. It's ultimately meant to help provide good education for dental hygiene students to have the right understanding of dental hygienists and bolster their professionalism. Methods : The subjects in this study were 301 dental hygiene students in four different colleges located in the metropolitan area. A survey was conducted to find out their satisfaction level with the department of dental hygiene, personal characteristics, awareness of college courses and awareness of the duties of dental hygienists. Results : The group of students who deemed the life span of the dental hygienist occupation to be long put more significance on the college courses that should focus on job performance. As for the relationship between their personal characteristics and awareness of the college courses, their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the department and their ideas on the life span of the occupation made significant differences to that. The group of students who considered the life span of the occupation to be longer thought that the college courses would be more linked to the duties of dental hygienists and their job performance and should be given more weight, and there were significant differences among them in their view of the life span of the occupation and awareness of the college courses that should be given more weight(p<.05). Their view of how much the college courses would be linked to the duties of dental hygienists had a statistically significant correlation to that of the college courses that should focus on the clinical job performance of dental hygienists. Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings suggest that as part of the regular curriculum, the kind of education that aims at boosting the professionalism and job performance of dental hygienists as experts should be provided for dental hygiene students to build the right values as professional dental hygienists.
This study aimed to determine the changes of awareness and preference of dental hygienists according to the experience of using a digital intraoral scanner through a convergence study. Data collected by an online survey for dental hygienists in Busan, Gyeongnam and Gyeongbuk were analyzed by SPSS 24.0 program. When dental hygienists had an experience of using a digital intraoral scanner, the awareness and preference of digital intraoral scanners were significantly higher. The experience of using a digital intraoral scanner showed a positive correlation with the clinical application experience of digital intraoral scanners; the clinical application experience of digital intraoral scanners, with the awareness of digital intraoral scanners; and the awareness of digital intraoral scanners, with the preference of digital intraoral scanners. In conclusion, the dental hygienist's experience in clinical application of digital intraoral scanners is expected to increase the awareness and preference, resulting in the improvement of dental hygienists' work ability. Therefore, it is believed that continuous education and learning about digital oral scanners are needed.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between self-esteem, self-efficacy, and awareness for disability in dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 521 dental hygiene students from 5 universities in Gwangju and Jeonnam frm June 13 to July 16, 2016. The questionnaire consisted of self-esteem by Rosenberg (10 items), self-efficacy by Schwarzer (7 items), and the negative awareness for disabled person by Siller (24 items) using Likert 5 point scale. Results: Those who did volunteer activity for disabled person showed high self-esteem and self-efficacy than those who did not. Students having disability-related training experience had high self-esteem (p<0.05). Higher the self-esteem was, higher the self-efficacy was (r=0.655). Higher the self-efficacy was, the lower the negative awareness was (r=-0.142). Higher self-esteem enhanced the positive awareness for the disabled person (r=-0.206)(p<0.01). Conclusions: The systematic curriculum development for the disabled person recognition improvement should be made in order to enhance self-esteem and self-efficacy of the dental hygiene students.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of mothers on their children's oral health and their concern for that by socio-demographic characteristics and the relationship of their awareness of methods of dental-caries prevention to their practice of the methods. Methods : The subjects in this study were 337 guardians of preschoolers at kindergartens and daycare centers. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 25 to May 27, 2011, and the collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS 18.0. Results : 1.Self-rated concern for children's oral health, 87.7 percent and 12.1 percent replied, "So-so." Whether they were working or not and whether they were mainly responsible for child rearing made significant differences to that(p<.05). 2. As to subjective awareness of their children's oral health, the largest group of the mothers answered "So-so." (44.9%) The second replied that their children were in good oral health(40.5%), and the third group in poor oral health(14.2%). 3. The relationship between self-rated concern for their children's oral health and awareness of methods of caries prevention, statistically significant differences were found according to toothbrushing education and sealant(p<.05). There were no statistically significant differences in practice, but application of fluoride was the least. 4. The relationship between self-rated awareness for their children's oral health and awareness of the preventive methods of caries, there were statistically significant gaps in awareness of toothbrushing education(p<.05). In practice, statistically significant gaps were found in practice of toothbrushing education and sugar-intake restriction(p<.01). 5. In regard to the correlation between awareness and practice of the preventive methods of caries, awareness of all the factors involving toothbrushing education, sealant, application of fluoride and restriction of sugar intake had a significant positive correlation to practice of them. Better awareness led to better practice. Conclusions : In order to ensure children's successful oral health care, more authentic education of how to prevent dental caries should be offered by experts such as dental hygienists and dentists. Especially, detailed information on application of fluoride, restriction of sugar intake and pit and sealant should be provided for mothers to help their children to stay away from dental caries.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the awareness towards dental radiation exposure and concern in the adults. Methods : A self-reported questionnaires was filled out by 470 adults over 19 years old in Seoul from May 16 to July 10, 2013. Results : Fear for dental radiography showed that those who positively thought of radiography had 2.86 folds necessity of radiography than those who did not. Positive responders worried about the hazards of dental radiation 4.64 folds than the negative responders. More worried responders had felt the radiation hazards 1.83 folds than those who worried less. The worried responders also had higher awareness of dental radiation hazards. Conclusions : Frequent use of dental radiography is able to be prevented by protective devices. So it is important to prevent the possible hazards of the dental radiography by personal protective education.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the image and the awareness of dental hygienists in dental hygiene and non-dental hygiene students. The subjects in this study were 414 students who were in the three-year-course department of dental hygiene and in another four-year-course non-dental hygiene department in G college in the city of Gwangju. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. As a result of general awareness about dental hygienists, the dental hygiene students knew 97.5% and non-dental hygiene students knew 80.6% about dental hygientist as a job. There were significant differences(p<0.001). In regard of awareness about status in medical law, medical technician was the highest in the dental hygiene students(52.8%), and medical assistant was the highest in the non-dental hygiene students(48.8%) 2. As a result of awareness about the main tasks of dental hygienists X-ray and scaling were the highest in the dental hygiene students(42.3%), and treatment assistance was the highest in the non-dental hygiene students(32.9%). 3. In regard to awareness about image of dental hygienists, both groups were the highest in professionalism and were the lowest in negative image. All variable were differences statistically between dental hygiene and non-dental hygiene students(p<0.05).
