In this study, we make simulation of density log using a Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) algorithm to make an analysis on density logging under different borehole environments, since density logging is affected by various borehole conditions like borehole size, density of borehole fluid, thickness and type of casing, and so on. MCNP algorithm has been widely used for simulation of problems of nuclear particle transportation. In the simulation, we consider the specific configuration of a tool (Robertson Geologging Co. Ltd) that Korea institute of geoscience and mineral resources (KIGAM) has used. In order to measure accurate bulk density of a formation, it is essential to make a calibration and correction chart for the tool under considerations. Through numerical simulation, this study makes calibration plot of the density tool in material with several known bulk densities and with boreholes of several different diameters. In order to make correction charts for the density logging, we simulate and analyze measurements of density logging under different borehole conditions by considering borehole size, density of borehole fluid, and presence of casing.
This paper describes an effective utilization method of well logging data and boring cores for understanding the geology of Keoje-do area. Six holes were drilled in 1988-1989, and all rock cores were recovered. Nevertheless, seven kinds of logs were carried out in each borehole. The geologic situations of the drilling sites are accurately evaluated from a comparison between core descriptions and well logging data. Porosities and clay contents of sedimentary rocks can be calculated using the data of density and gamma-ray logs. Fractured zones are easily detected from the change in inside diameter of borehole by caliper log. Sonic, density and gamma-ray logging data clearly indicate alternated and dyke zones; the former can be detceted from an acoustic wave attenuation and a decline of compaction by sonic and density logs, the latter can be detected from the amount of potassium contents of bed rock and dyke by gamma-ray log.

To investigate the restoration progression on soil physical properties and vegetation at the surface of logging road affected by timber harvesting operation. This study was carried out at logging roads constructed from 1989 to 1994 in Mt. Baekwoon, Kwangyang, Chollanam-do. Judging from the analysis of soil hardness, there were significant changes in the depth of soil between 5 and 10cm. Soil hardness was recovered from the compacted condition to the natural forest condition after 9 years passed. Soil macroporous ratio (pF2.7) of topsoil was higher than that of deep soil. Soil moisture retention of topsoil was more improved than that of deep soil. From the view of soil bulk density, the necessary time for recovering to the undisturbed condition of forest soil was about 10 years in the logging road left. Soil physical properties such as soil bulk density and porous ratio were recovered as time passed. Improved soil physical properties promoted the plant recovery on the logging road surface. The dominant species on the logging roads were Comus kousa, Prunus sargentii as overstory species, Rubus crataegifolius, Lespedeza bicolor as understory species, and Saussurea gracilis, Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum as herbaceous species. The plant recovery of bank-slopes was faster than that of cut-slopes and road surface. In progress of year, average plant coverage were 70 to 90% in cut- and bank-slopes and 30 to 60% on the logging road, surface which was elapsed 9 years after logging road construction. Therefore, additional planting and seeding work could be effective to the soil condition and vegetation restoration.
The purpose of this study is to collect basic data which are prerequisite for quantitative analysis of coal logging data. The study involves laboratory measurements of physical properties such as seismic velocities (P,S-waves), resitivity and density of domestic and imported foreign coals. The relationships between these properties were analyzed by using cross-plots. Correlation between the physical properties of coal and the results of chemical analysis (calorie, fixed carbon, ash, moisture, volatile matter and sulfur contents) was also studied to obtain ideas about coal quality analysis using logging data. Summarized results are as follows: 1. $V_P$ is exponentialy related to $V_S$. And the average value of $V_P$ is about l.8 times as large as $V_S$. 2. Since coal has very low density compared with surrounding sedimentary rocks, density logging is appeared to be the best method for identifying coal seams and evaluating their qualities. 3. For the case of domestic coals, the ash contents and calorie show a perfect inverse relationship. Since the density increases as increase of ash content with a well-defined functional form, the ash content of domestic coals can be estimated by density measurements. 4. Because of low ash content, low density and high resistivity, foreign coals and domestic lignites are easily distinguished from domestic coals.
Among the different techniques available, nuclear methods, including gamma-gamma logging tools, are of special importance. Though the real environment which surrounds the drilled borehole is a complex fractured medium which the fluid can flow through the porosities, simulation studies generally use the traditional model of a homogeneous mixture of formation and the liquid. Considering a previously published study, which shows that modeling of fluid flow in fractured reservoirs and simulating the formation as an inhomogeneous fractured medium leads to different results compared with those of homogeneous mixture, here we study the effect of the presence of drilling fluid (mudcake) on the response of the detectors in both the models. To study this effect, a typical gamma-gamma logging tool was modeled by using the MCNPX Monte Carlo code. The results show that the responses of the detectors in the mixture model in the presence of various thicknesses of mudcake are sensitive to the density of the formation material. However, this effect is not notable in the inhomogeneous fractured medium. These results emphasize the importance of the model employed for simulation of the medium in gamma-gamma well-logging.
The aim of this study was to provide the basic design parameters for developing logging residue compression machines by investigating compressive deformation characteristics of different types of logging residues. To achieve these objectives, Pinus rigida, Pinus koraensis and Quercus mongolica were selected as specimens, and compression-deformation tests by UTM(universial testing machine) were conducted. The experimental dataset were used to set up the model based on the compression-deformation ratio in the form of exponential function. The results showed that stress coefficient in terms of mechanical properties of logging residues was decreased, whereas strain coefficient tended to be increased as the number of compression increased at target density of $350kg/m^3$ and $400kg/m^3$. The model presented that the required stress was decreased as the number of compression increased, and the stress growth rate was swelled compared to the change of the deformation rate. Therefore, it showed that proper initial compression force was a significant variable in order to achieve the target density of logging residue.
Recently the application of geophysical well logging to geotechnical site investigation is increasing, because the merit that geophysical logs provide the high resolution and in-situ physical properties in volumes of rock surrounding the borehole. Geophysical well logs are used to identify lithologic boundaries and fracture, to determine the physical properties of rock(i.e., density, velocity etc.), and to detect permeable fracture zones that could be conduits for ground water movement through the rocks. The principle of heat-pulse meter, the calibration of gamma-gamma logging, and principles and data processing of full waveform sonic logging are briefly reviewed, and the case studies of geophysical logs are discussed. Correlation between velocity by sonic logging and rock mass classification such as RMR(Rock Mass Rating) value is considered.
Soundness evaluation of a structure being constructed under the sea is usually difficult. In this study, a cross-hole sonic logging(CSL) which have been used for non-destructive test of concrete piles is adopted for the integrity test and monitoring of DCM(deep cement mixing) treated soils. Chemical and physical characteristics of raw ground materials are analysed to delineate ground environmental effects on the strength of DCM treated soils. In order to convert cross-hole sonic logging data into compressive strength, correlations between compressive strengths and wave velocities of core samples have been obtained. It is found that there is little effect of ground environment on the strength of the DCM treated soils, and the density distribution of core samples and cross-hole logging data show that a defective zone may exist in the DCM treated soils. With the time lapse, however, the defective zone has been cured and consequently, compressive strength of the DCM treated soils increases and satisfies the design parameter. From this study it can be concluded that the cross-hole sonic logging can be used for the integrity test as well as monitoring the curing stage of the structures, successfully.
Groundwater flow in a fractured rock mass is related to the geometric characteristics of the fracture system. The objective of this study aims to analyze the probabilistic density function of fracture properties md their relations to the hydraulic conductivity in volcanic rocks of the northern Yosu area. Fracture characteristics were investigated by core logging and acoustic televiewer logging in four boreholes and the hydraulic conductivity was obtained from the constant pressure injection and fall-off tests. The 303 fractures were grouped into three sets by their orientation and three fracture types by the degree of opening in aperture. As a result of the study, the hydraulic conductivity in the test section intersected by open and semi-open fractures, conductive fractures, and set 1 fractures was very high, while closed fractures did rarely affect the hydraulic conductivity. It was recognized that the hydraulic conductivity in a fractured rock mass was preferentially affected by the aperture size of conductive fractures and fracture intersection frequency and size, secondly.
The objective of the study was to provide the useful scientific data on the early rehabilitation of the legging road after timber harvesting in the forest area. This study was carried out at logging roads which were constructed during 1989 and 1994 in Mt. Baekwoon. The field survey was conducted in July, 1991. Judging from the analysis of soil bulk density, time required for recovery as the undisturbed forest soil condition was more than 10 years in the road which was left, and the regression equation is as follows, $$Y_1=1.4195-0.0744{\cdot}X(R^2=0.91)$$$$Y_2=1.4673-0.0688{\cdot}X(R^2=0.73)$$ (X : elapsed year after road construction. $Y_1$, $Y_2$ : soil bulk density($g/cm^3$) at 0~7.5cm, and 7.5~15.0cm, respectively) Especially soil bulk density with buffer strip-woods was $0.890-0.903g/cm^3$, so it was 20% lower than that of logging road surface without buffer strip-woods. Among the 7 factors, location, sand content, and soil hardness had statistically significant effect on the soil bulk density in logging road surface. The pioneer species on logging road surface were Rhus cratargifolius, Prunus chinensis, and Lespedeza cyrtobotrya, etc. in woody species, and Pteridium aquilinum, Arundinella hirta, and Lysimachia clethroides, etc. in herb species. So, in process of year, average plant coverage were 70% on cutting and banking slope and 20% on logging road surface which elapsed 6 years after logging road construction. Through this research, buffer strip-woods must be remained for environmental conservation of forest conditions, and from the time to be closed the road, planting, seeding, and grazing works could be effective to the soil condition and vegetation recovery.
