  • The recent seismic events that occurred in South Korea have increased the interest in the re-evaluation of the seismic capacity of nuclear power plant (NPP) equipment, which is often conservatively estimated. To date, various approaches-including the Bayesian method proposed by the United States (US) Electric Power Research Institute -have been developed to quantify the seismic capacity of NPP equipment. Among these, the Bayesian approach has advantages in accounting for both prior knowledge and new information to update the probabilistic distribution of seismic capacity. However, data availability and region-specific issues exist in applying this Bayesian approach to Korean NPP equipment. Therefore, this paper proposes to construct an earthquake experience database by combining available earthquake records at Korean NPP sites and the general location of equipment within NPPs. Also, for the better representation of the seismic demand of Korean earthquake datasets, which have distinct seismic characteristics from those of the US at a high-frequency range, a broadband frequency range optimization is suggested. The proposed data construction and seismic demand optimization method for seismic capacity re-evaluation are demonstrated and tested on a 480 V motor control center of a South Korea NPP.

  • Recently, the demand for high penetration of variable renewable energy (VRE) penetration in a power system is increased. In consequence, distribution systems including microgrids confront the increased installation of VRE-based distributed generation. Despite of the high demand of VRE-based distributed generation in a distribution system, the installation of photovoltaic (PV) system in a distribution system has been restricted by various problems. In other words, the hosting capacity for high VRE penetration in a distribution system is limited. This paper analyzes the improvements of hosting capacity VRE penetration of stand-alone microgrid (SAMG) with energy storage system (ESS) by considering virtual-slack (VS) control based on power sensitivity. With the pre-defined power sensitivity, the ESS operates as virtual slack in the SAMG by controlling its bus voltage and phase angle indirectly. Therefore, the ESS enables the increase of VRE penetration in the SAMG. The proposed VS control is realized by analyzing the ESS as a virtual slack in power flow analysis based on power sensitivity. Then its validity is demonstrated with the case study on the SAMG in South Korea with practical data.

  • The present study was intended to measure the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction among nurses working for a general hospitals. The self-administered questionnaires were given to 312 nurses during the period from February 25 to March 16, 2013. As a results, the level of job satisfaction of subjects was significantly lower in high group than low group in job demand, but it was significantly lower in low group than high group in job control, supervisor support and coworker support. In correlations, job satisfaction were found to be in a negative correlation with job demand, whereas in positive correlation with job control, supervisor and coworker support. In logistic analysis, the odds ratio of job satisfaction on job demand were significantly increased in the high group than in low group, but job control supervisor and coworker support were significantly decreased in the high group than in low group. In hierarchial multiple regression analysis, the affecting factors to the job satisfaction was selected variables such as educational background, work station, subject satisfaction of work, career choice motives, turnover experience, job stress contents(job demand, job control, supervisor support and coworker support). especially, job stress contents was significantly increased of explanatory power of job satisfaction. It suggested that the level of job satisfaction got more power by addition of job stress contents.

  • Demand for the technology for access to device control network in industry and for access to building automation system via internet is on the increase. In such technology integration of a device control network with a data network such as internet and organizing wide-ranging DCS(distributed control system) is needed, and it can be realized in the framework of VDN(virtual device network). Specifications for device control network and data network are quite different because of the differences in application. So a router that translates the communication protocol between device control network and data network, and efficiently transmits information to destination is needed for implementation of the VDN(virtual device network). This paper proposes the concept of NCS(networked control system) based on VDN(virtual device network) and suggests the routing algorithm that uses embedded system.

  • There are two major issues for activated sludge process in sewage treatment plant. One is how to make sewage be more clean and the other is the energy saving in sewage treatment process. The major monitoring sewage qualities are chemical oxygen demand, phosphorus, nitrogen, suspended solid in effluent. These are transmitted to the national TMS(Telemetry Monitoring System) at every hour. If these exceed the environmental standard, the environmental charges imposed. So, these water qualities are to be controlled below the environmental standard in operation of sewage treatment plant. And recently, the energy saving is also important in process operation. Over 50% energy is consumed in blowers and motors for injection oxygen into aeration tank. So, with the water qualities to be controlled below the environmental standard, the energy saving also is to be accomplished for efficient plant management. Almost researches are aimed to control water quality without considering energy saving. AI techniques have been used for control water quality. AI modeling simulator provided the optimal control inputs(blower speed, waste sludge, return sludge) for control water quality. Blower speed is the main control input for activated sludge process. To make sewage be more clean, the excessive blower speed is supplied, but water quality is not better than the previous. In results, non necessary energy is consumed. In this paper we propose a new method that the energy saving also is to be accomplished with the water qualities to be controlled below the environmental standard for efficient plant management. Water qualities in only aeration tank are used the inputs of fuzzy models. Outputs of these models are chemical oxygen demand, phosphorus, nitrogen, suspended solid in effluent and have the environmental standards. In test, we found this method could save 10% energy than the previous methods.

  • The objective of the research is two fold. The first is to design and propose a stable and robust learning control algorithm. The controller is CMAC Learning Controller which consists of a model-based controller, such as LQR or PID, as a reference control and a CMAC. The second objective is to implement a reference control and CMAC at two different sampling rates. Generally, a conventional controller is designed based on a mathematical plant model. However, increasing complexity of the plant and accuracy requirement on mathematical models nearly prohibits the application of the conventional controller design approach. To avoid inherent complexity and unavoidable uncertainty in modeling, biology mimetic methods have been developed. One of such attempts is Cerebellar Model Articulation Computer(CMAC) developed by Albus. CMAC has two main disadvantages. The first disadvantage of CMAC is increasing memory requirement with increasing number of input variables and with increasing accuracy demand. The memory needs can be solved with cheap memories due to recent development of new memory technology. The second disadvantage is a demand for processing powers which could be an obstacle especially when CMAC should be implemented in real-time. To overcome the disadvantages of CMAC, we propose CMAC learning controller with multiple sampling rates. With this approach a conventional controller which is a reference to CMAC at high enough sampling rate but CMAC runs at the processor's unoccupied time. To show efficiency of the proposed method, an inverted pendulum controller is designed and implemented. We also demonstrate it's possibility as an industrial control solution and robustness against a modeling uncertainty.

  • A fuel cell power plant is a very complex system which has various control loops with some non-linearity. For control of a fuel cell power plant, dynamic models of fuel cell stacks have been developed and simplified process flow diagrams of a fuel cell power plant has been presented. Using such a model of a Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) power plant, this paper deals with development of an intelligent setpoint reference governor (I-SRG) to find the optimal setpoints and feed forward control inputs for the plant power demand. The I-SRG is implemented with neural network by using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm based on system constraints and performance objectives. The feasibility of the I-SRG is shown through simulation of an MCFC power plant for tracking control of its power demand.

  • The paper is related to smart maximum power system based on program logic. Especially, this system compares the total demand power with the target power by using the signal from the digital kilo watt meter. Based on the power information by the maximum power control equipment the consumed future power is anticipated. In addition, through consumed future power the controllable target power is set, and it applies on the maximum power control equipment. User or manager would control the load efficiently through the simple programming which could control load based on the control sequence and relay. So this system could control load more efficient and stable. Also the conventional load control circuit is not needed. Therefore, it is possible to improve the simple system configuration, which is resulted in cost effective and time saving. So this system is anticipated on time and coast.

  • The continuing demand for quality products requires better understanding and improved control of the production process. And, in recent year requirements for flatness control in strip rolling have become increasinglysevere because of the control for flatness of cold rolled strip is essential for further down stream processing. Also a speeds of rolling mills to meet productivity requirements puts a demanding requirement on the control of flatness of rolled strip. The demands on a total flatness control system therefore are a measuring and indication system consisting of a measuring roll that is robust, accurate, reliable and require a minimum of maintenance. The critical prt of any control system is the quality of the information being provided by the measurement instrument or device. It is therfore of utmost importance to have an accurate, repeatable and reliable measuring system. So, in this paper, The measuring roll for automatic flatness control system of contact type has been investigated.
