An experimental and analytical investigation is performed to study the buckling behavior of composite laminates with an embedded delamination. It is of particular interest to veryfy whether delamination growth cddurs with continuming deformation after buckling of composite laminates with an embedded delamination. Experiments are conducted for [0/sub 4///90/sub 8//0/sub 4/]/sub r/ laminates with delamination size in which local buckling mode governs buckling. Results show that delamination growth occurs in hgigher load after buckling and is accompanid by other damage mechanisms such as splitting. Also, it is found that transverse deformation before difurcation buckling is due to initial imperfection and structure such as plate with small bending stiffness is sensitive to that.

The finite element modeling is used to study the buckling and postbuckling behavior of composite laminates with an embedded delamination. Degenerated shell element and rigid beam element are utilized for the finite element modeling. In the nonlinear finite element formulation, the updated Lagrangian description method based on the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Green strain tensor is used. The buckling and postbuckling behavior of composite laminates with a delamination are investigated for various delamination sizes, stacking sequences, and boundary conditions. It is shown that the buckling load and postbuckling behavior of composite laminates depend on the buckling model which is determined by the delamination size, stacking sequence and boundary condition. Also, results show that introduction of couplings can reduce greatly the buckling load.

A mesh superposition technique is presented for an efficient analysis of structural behavior. Refined child mesh is superimposed over parent elements for the region of interest. It is a kind of adaptive mesh refinement, which allows locally refined mesh without introducing transition region or multipoint constraints. Proper boundary condition is necessary to avoid redundant rigid body motion and kinematic compatibility between neighbor elements. Delamination buckling analysis is conducted to demonstrate accuracy and efficiency of the present method.

Delamination reduces an elastic buckling load of the laminated composite structures and lead to global structural failure at loads below the design level. Therefore, the problem of the delamination buckling of laminated composite structures has generated significant research interest and has been the subject of many theoretical and experimental investigations. However, questions still remain regarding a complete understanding and details of the phenomena involved. In this paper an efficient finite element model is presented for analyzing the elastic buckling behavior of laminated composite plates with square embedded delamination using a solid element based on a three-dimensional theory. The solid finite element, named by EAS-SOLID8, based on an enhanced assumed strain method is developed. The study for elastic buckling behavior of laminated composite plates with embedded square delaminations are focused on various parameters, such as support condition and width-to-thickness ratio. Both graphs and buckling modes in this paper are good guide for design of the laminated composite plates with embedded square delamination.

Layer separation (delamination) is an essential threat to fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) plates under dynamic, static, and fatigue loads. Under compressive load, the growth of delamination will lead to structural instability. The aim of this paper is to present a method using shape memory alloy (SMA) stitches to suppress the delamination growth in a FRP plate and to improve the buckling behavior of the plate with a rectangular hole. The present paper is divided into two parts. Firstly, a closed-form (CF) formulation for evaluating the buckling load of the FRP plate is presented. Secondly, the finite element method (FEM) will be employed to calculate the buckling loads of the plates which serves to validate the results obtained from the closed-form method. The novelty of this work is the development of the closed-form solution using the p-Ritz energy approach regarding the stress-dependent phase transformation of SMA to trace the equilibrium path. For the FEM, the Lagoudas constitutive model of the SMA material is implemented in FORTRAN programming language using a user material subroutines (VUMAT). The model is simulated in ABAQUS/Explicit solver due to the nature of the loading type. The cohesive zone model (CZM) is applied to simulate the delamination growth.
Recently laminated plates like composite materials has been used in a various field to grow the specific strength of the composition. However, delamination area caused by barely visible impact damage has potential risk that it can raise buckling of the delaminated plate. Because it can interrupt compressive behavior of laminated plates and reduce their strength, the whole structure can't be constituted by these materials. Many studies assume that behavior of the delaminated plate which is in lamanated plates equals theoretical buckling but their actual motion doesn't coincide because of initial imperfections of materials like deflection, residual stress, eccentricity and so on. In this paper, we change laminated plates with initial delamination into a beam of rectangular cross section with the initial crack and analyze compressive behavior according to initial imperfections through finite element method(FEM). Consequently analysis results show that behavior of laminated plates involving delamination differs from ideal buckling of the delaminated plate in actual conditions and we can predict its motion through imperfections relationship.
Composite laminates are used in a wide range of applications including defense, automotive, aviation and aerospace, marine, wind energy, and recreational sporting goods. These composite beams still exhibit problems such as buckling, local deformations, and interlaminar delamination. To overcome these drawbacks, a novel viscoelastic autoclave bonding with tapered epoxy reinforcement polyurethane films is proposed. In existing laminates, compression face wrinkling and interlaminar delamination is caused in the sandwich beam. The unique viscoelastic autoclave spunbond interlayer bonding is designed to prevent face wrinkling and absorb and distribute stresses induced by external loads, thereby eliminating interlaminar delamination in the sandwich beam. Also, the existing special reinforcement causes stress concentrations, and the core is not effectively connected, which directly affects the stiffness of the beam. To address this, a novel tapered epoxy polyurethane reinforcement adhesive film is proposed, whose reinforcement thickness gradually tapers as it enters the core material. This minimizes stress concentrations at the interface, preventing excessive adhesive squeeze-out during the bonding process, and improves the stiffness of the beam. Results indicate the proposed model avoids the formation of micro cracks, interlaminar delamination, buckling, and local deformations, and effectively improves the stiffness of the beam.
Dynamic buckling of structure is one of the failure modes that needs to be considered since it may result in catastrophic failure of the structure in a short period of time. For a thin fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) plate under compression, buckling is an inherent hazard which will be intensified by the existence of defects like holes, cracks, and delamination. On the other hand, the growth of the delamination is another prime concern for thin FRP plates. In the current paper, reinforcing the plates against buckling is realized by using SMA wires in the form of stitches. A numerical framework is proposed to simulate the dynamic instability emphasizing the effect of the SMA stitches in suppressing delamination growth. The suggested algorithm is more accurate than the other methods when considering the transformation point of the SMA wires and the modeling of the cohesive zone using simple and yet reliable technique. The computational design of the method by producing the line by line orders leads to a simple algorithm for simulating the super-elastic behavior. The Lagoudas constitutive model of the SMA material is implemented in the form of user material subroutines (VUMAT). The normal bilinear spring model is used to reproduce the cohesive zone behavior. The nonlinear finite element formulation is programmed into FORTRAN using the Newmark-beta numerical time-integration approach. The obtained results are compared with the results obtained by the finite element method using ABAQUS/Explicit solver. The obtained results by the proposed algorithm and those by ABAQUS are in good agreement.
The axisymmetric buckling delamination of the Piezoelectric/Metal/Piezoelectric (PZT/Metal/PZT) sandwich circular plate with interface penny-shaped cracks is investigated. The case is considered where open-circuit conditions with respect to the electrical displacement on the upper and lower surfaces, and short-circuit conditions with respect to the electrical potential on the lateral surface of the face layers are satisfied. It is assumed that the edge surfaces of the cracks have an infinitesimal rotationally symmetric initial imperfection and the development of this imperfection with rotationally symmetric compressive forces acting on the lateral surface of the plate is studied by employing the exact geometrically non-linear field equations and relations of electro-elasticity for piezoelectric materials. The sought values are presented in the power series form with respect to the small parameter which characterizes the degree of the initial imperfection. The zeroth and first approximations are used for investigation of stability loss and buckling delamination problems. It is established that the equations and relations related to the first approximation coincide with the corresponding ones of the three-dimensional linearized theory of stability of electro-elasticity for piezoelectric materials. The quantities related to the zeroth approximation are determined analytically, however the quantities related to the first approximation are determined numerically by employing Finite Element Method (FEM). Numerical results on the critical radial stresses acting in the layers of the plate are presented and discussed. In particular, it is established that the piezoelectricity of the face layer material causes an increase (a decrease) in the values of the critical compressive stress acting in the face (core) layer.
This paper deals with the buckling and postbuckling responses, and the progressive failure of square laminates of symmetric lay-up with a central rectangular cutout under in-plane shear load. A detailed investigation is made to show the effects of cutout size and cutout aspect ratio on the buckling and postbuckling responses, failure loads and failure characteristics of $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$, $(+45/-45)_{4s}$ and $(0/90)_{4s}$ laminates. The 3-D Tsai-Hill criterion is used to predict the failure of a lamina while the onset of delamination is predicted by the interlaminar failure criterion. In addition, the effects of boundary conditions on buckling loads, failure loads, failure modes, and maximum transverse deflection for a $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$ laminate with and without a square cutout have been presented. It is concluded that because of early onset of delamination at the net section of cutouts before first-ply failure, total strength of the laminate with very small cutouts can not be utilized.
