  • Following results were obtained for the mechanical degradation of polystyrene (for polystyrene itself and when blended with rubber) by roll mastication. 1) The rate of mechanical degradation for polystyrene itself can be represented by the second-order rate equation proposed by Goto. $-\frac{dP_t}{dt} = k_s(P_t-P_{\infty})^2$ Where Pt is the degree of polymerization of the degraded polymer at t minutes and $P{\infty}$ is the final degree of polymerization. 2) The mechanical degradation of polystyrene component in the polystyrene-rubber (SBR, BR) blend system occurred similarly as that of polystyrene itself. 3) Under the experimental conditions the mechanical degradation rate of the polystyrene component of the polystyrene-rubber, (SBR, BR) blend system followed approximately the same second-order equation as that for polystyrene itself.

  • We are studied the stability of amorphous and crystalline $Te_{100-x}Ge_x$ (x=10, 15. 25, 40, 50, 60 at.%) thin films by observing the degradation in 8O%RH/$66^{\circ}C$ environment and the reflectance ratio. The degradation was observed with the transmittance and reflectance, the reflectance was measured at 780nm in the wavelength range of diode laser. In amorphous $Te_{100-x}Ge_x$ thin films of below x=4O at.%, the degradation was observed, the thin film of x=10 at.% was shown the degradation degree of 12.5%. In crystalline $Te_{100-x}Ge_x$ thin films of x=10, 40 at.%, the degradation degree were 12.8%, 13%, respectively. The reflectance ratio were shown above 20% in. all composition ratio. Therefore, we are expected that $Te_{100-x}Ge_x$ thin films of x=50, 60 at.% has the long life for the optical recording media.

  • The enzymatic isolation of residual lignins obtained from spruce and beech pulps (obtained by sulfite, kraft, ASAM and soda/AQ/MeOH pulping processes) and their characterization was described in previous publications. Here, the residual lignins have been submitted to potassium permanganate oxidation (KMnO4 degradation), and 9 aromatic carboxylic acids (3 of them are dimeric) were identified after methylation with diazomethane by GC/MS. The analytical challenge during qantification by the internal standard methods was the partly high protein content of the samples, which resulted in elevated anisic acid yields in the degradation mixture of sulfite residual lignins. The results are compared with the KMnO4 degradation of the corresponding MWLs and discussed in terms of S/G ratios and degrees of condensation. The latter was calculated as a quotient between the aromatic carboxylic acids derived from condensed and non-condensed lignin structures. Typical degradation patterns for the various processes have been observed. Among other parameter, the relative compositions between iso-hemipinic acid (which is for condensation in pos. 5 of the aromatic ring) and meta-hemipinic acid and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphthalic acid (both are for condensation in pos. 6 of the aromatic ring) was found to be process specific. Kraft and soda/AQ/MeOH residual lignins yielded higher amounts of iso-hemipinic acid. In contrast, the relative yields of meta-hemipinic acid and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphthalic acid (the latter in beech lignins) are higher in sulfite and particularly in ASAM residual lignin. In case of beech residual lignins the amount of acids originated from non-condensed syringyl type lignin units was surprisingly high. The condensation degree of residual lignins was shown to be generally higher than that of MWLs. This was especially true for the G units. ASAM residual lignin exhibited very high S/G ratios and degrees of polymerization. Causality between condensation degree and total yield of degradation products was demonstrated.

  • The contents of this paper include a non-destructive technique for evaluating the degradation of the boiler superheater tube in a fossil power plant through an electrochemical polarization test. Correlation between Ip of polarization parameter and SP-DBTT for the superheater tubes in long-term use was obtained. 1.0Cr-0.5Mo steel was degraded by softening, and the degree of degradation was dependent upon carbides with Cr and Mo elements. Since brittle fracture at low temperature and ductile fracture mode at high temperature were shown, similarity between standard Charpy and small punch tests could be found. In addition, SP-DBTT showing the degree of degradation was higher, as the time-in use of the materials got longer. Electrolyte including picric acid of 1.3 g in distilled water of 100ml at 25.deg. C temperature and sodium tridecylbenzene sulfonate with 1g could be applied to evaluate the degradation of 1.0Cr-0.5Mo steel by means of the electrochemical polarization test. Ip and Ipa values measured through the electrochemical test are the appropriate parameters for representing the degradation of the superheater tube(1.0Cr-0.5Mo steel) for the fossil power plant. It is poassible to evaluate the degradation of materials with different time histories electrochemically, by Ip value only, at field test.

  • Longitudinal dynamic behaviors of a bridge system under seismic excitations are examined with various magnitudes of peak ground accelerations. The stiffness degradation due to abutment-soil interaction is considered in the bridge model which may play the major role upon the global dynamic characteristics. The idealized mechanical model for the whole ridge system is proposed by adopting the multiple-degree-of-freedom system which can consider components such as pounding phenomena friction at the movable supports rotational and translational motions of foundations and the nonlinear pier motions. The abutment-soil interaction is simulated by utilizing the one degree-of-freedom system with nonlinear spring. The stiffness degradation of the abutment-soil system is found to increase the relative displacement under moderate seismic excitations.

  • The remaining life estimation for the aged components in power plants as well as chemical plants are very important beacuse mechanical properties of the components are degraded with time of service exposure in high temperature. Since it is difficult to take specimens from the operating components to evaluate mechanical properties of components, nondestructive techniques are needed to estimate the degradation. In this study, test materials with 4 different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. And the DC potential drop method and destructive methods such as tensile, $K_{IC}$ and hardness tests were used in order to evaluate the degradation of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels. The objective of this study is to investigate the possibility of the application of DCPD method to estimate the material degradation, and to analyse the relationship between the electrical resistivity and the degree of material degradation.

  • We evaluated the degradation properties of various alkanolamine absorbents (MEA, AMP, DEA, and MDEA) having different chemical structures for $CO_2$ capture. The degradation of $CO_2$ absorbent in general was known to be caused by oxygen which is in flue gas and by heat source, respectively. To analyze the effect of $CO_2$ and $O_2$ on degree of degradation, we conducted a variety of experiments at $30^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ (oxidative degradation) and $130^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$ (thermal degradation), respectively. DEA showed the worst property for oxidative degradation in the presence of oxygen among the alkanolamine absorbents. In the case of thermal degradation, the degradation of absorbent was occurred for most of absorbents at $150^{\circ}C$. Among these absorbents, MEA and DEA gave the worst results. As a result, AMP which is a primary amine and having a steric hindrance showed the best result through the degradation test. But, the degradation of absorbent proceeded easily in the case of DEA which is a secondary amine and having 2 OH groups in terminal position. Consequently, we have evaluated the degree of degradation of various absorbents having different chemical structures to give the basic data for the development of alkanolamine absorbent.

  • Photovoltaic (PV) panels are generally treated as the most dependable components of PV systems; therefore, investigations are necessary to understand and emphasize the degradation of PV cells. In almost all specific deprivation models, humidity and temperature are the two major factors that are responsible for PV module degradation. However, even if the degradation mode of a PV module is determined, it is challenging to research them in practice. Long-term response experiments should thus be conducted to investigate the influences of the incidence, rates of change, and different degradation methods of PV modules on energy production; such models can help avoid lengthy experiments to investigate the degradation of PV panels under actual working conditions. From the review, it was found that the degradation rate of PV modules in climates where the annual average ambient temperature remained low was -1.05% to -1.16% per year, and the degree of deterioration of PV modules in climates with high average annual ambient temperatures was -1.35% to -1.46% per year; however, PV manufacturers currently claim degradation rates of up to -0.5% per year.

  • The time to tracking breakdown of treated filled specimen is longer than untreated filled specimen. And, after the RWDT, the surface of specimen by adding untreated filler appeared heavy erosion. It was found that the addition to surface treated filler. the better tracking resistance. In the RWDT, the breakdown specimen is not affected by the dry flashover voltage. despite the fact that the surface degradation of tracking test has different state on each specimen. This suggests that wet flashover voltage play an important role in evaluating of tracking and erosion on the surface degradation in tracking test. And, the flashover voltage of specimen under wet conditions are greatly affected by the salt concentration and degree of degradation by the RWDT. Because of hydrophobicity and degree of degradation by the RWDT, the flashover voltage of treated filled specimen is higher than that of untreated filled specimen. Different types of specimen may have different hydrophobicity and their surface state under contaminated conditions may not be the same. It is assumed that this phenomenon is related to the decrease in hydrophobicity of the surface of the materials.

  • The primary function of ZnO lightning arrester is to protect transmission and distribution equipment from overvoltages and to absorb electrical energy resulting from lightning or switching surges and form temporary overvoltage. However, ZnO lightning arrester are known to exhibit an increases in resistive current with time, the rate of increase being exacerbated with increasing applied voltage and ambient temperature. So, it is important to the leakage current measurement of ZnO lightning arrester. In addition, since the resistive leakage current caused by deterioration of ZnO lightning arrester mainly caused an increase of the third harmonic component, thereby it is possible the arrester degradation diagnosis by measuring the third harmonic component in the total leakage current. The leakage current and third harmonic component are measured and used to investigate the degradation diagnosis of ZnO element of arrester. Also the SEM photography is used to investigate the change of crystal structure of ZnO element with degradation.
