  • Ultrasonic absorption was measured in bovine serum albumin (BSA) aqueous solution (50 g/l) in the frequency range from 100 kHz to 1600 MHz at neutral pH. Three experimental techniques were used to cover the wide frequency range : plano-concave resonator, conventional Bragg reflection, and high-resolution Bragg reflection methods. The absorption spectrum at neutral pH fitted the relaxation curve well using the distribution function of a mirror image of Davidson-Cole function. The relaxaition behavior was interpreted in terms of various degree of hydration of BSA molecules.

  • A thermoresponsive polymer, poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), was successfully synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Different amounts of 1,3-propanesultone were used as quaternization agent to transit the PDMAEMA into partially modified poly(zwitterions), resulting in p[DMAEMA-co-3-dimethyl(methacryloyloxyethyl)ammonium propanesulfonate] (PDMAEMA-co-PDMAPS). Molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and degree of quarternization were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The transmission spectra of the 1.0 wt % aqueous solutions of the resulting polymers at 650 nm were measured as a function of temperature. Results showed that the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) could be easily controlled by the different composition of dimethylamino and zwitterion groups. The effect of partial quaternization on thermoresponsive properties was also studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS) with the same aqueous concentration (1.0 wt %) as employed for turbidimetry studies. The LCST and UCST values measured by DLS correlated well with those determined by turbidimetry.

  • A standardized scoring system for college interview entrance examination means we standardize the score of examination to adjust the degree of difficulty among questions and difference of panel's disposition. A standardized scoring system were newly enforced at college interview entrance examination from 2001. Colleges want to choose the most suitably qualified students, taking full advantage of interview examination. Also they should always prepare for questions, plan the answers and a standardized scoring system so that all candidates get a fair shake. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a standardized scoring system for interview examination. The results of interview examination are ranked from highest to lowest and each candidate have different rank from several panels. So some unit scores from panels are given for each candidate using standard normal distribution. Then we calculate the mean unit score for each candidate and final interview entrance examination scores are given using the mean unit score for each candidate.

  • Chloride ingress is a common cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. Modeling the chloride ingress is an important basis for designing reinforced concrete structures and for assessing the reliability of an existing structure. The modelling is also needed for predicting the deterioration of a reinforced structure. This paper presents an approach for the probabilistic modeling of the chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete structures that takes into account the uncertainties in the physical models. The parameters of the models are modeled as random variables and the distribution of the corrosion time and probability of corrosion are determined by using Monte Carlo simulation. The predictions of the proposed model is very effective to do the decision-making about initiation time and deterioration degree.

  • A two dimensional finite element method was used to analyze the changes in mechanical behavior of the supporting structures when a fixed prosthesis replaced a mandibular 1st molar. In the unrestored situation as the degree of bone resorption increased, there was a corresponding increase in stress in the periodontium. Tilting of the molar abutment induced the additional stress on the mesial side of the root. The presence of a fixed prosthesis markedly reduced the magnitude and distribution of stress in the periodontium. The mechanical advantage obtained by a fixed prosthesis was greater in the situation of a tilted 2nd molar with reduced bone support than with the higher bone levels.

  • The properties of 10 kinds of MgO clinker were investigated to know the effect of MgO clinker's porperties on corrosion of MgO-C brick. For MgO clinker, chemical composition, porosity, density, periclase grain size, and microstructure were examined, while slag corrosion resistance was examined for MgO-C brick. In MgO clinker pore size and it's distribution, periclase grain size, impurities composition and the composition of grain boundaries are more important factors to determine corrosion degree of MgO-C brick than density, potosity and MgO purity.

  • Base station coordination has received much attention as a means to reduce the inter-cell interference in cellular networks. However, this interference reducing ability comes at the expense of increased feedback, backhaul load and computational complexity. The degree of coordination is therefore limited in practice. In this paper, we explore the trade-off between capacity and feedback load in a cellular network with coordination clusters. Our main interest lies in a scenario with multiple fading users in each cell. The results indicate that a large fraction of the total gain can be achieved by a significant reduction in feedback. We also find an approximate expression for the distribution of the instantaneous signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and propose a new effective scheduling algorithm.

  • Electrical stress makes insulating materials aged finally resulting in the dielectric failure. It becomes more and more important to recognize the degree of aging and the life time of the insulating materials since it is directly concerned with the reliability of the insulation system. In this paper, the life time of the Cross-linked Polyethylene(XLPE), the insulation layer in the 154kV-grade power cable, is expected and calculated using statistical and mathematical methods. The simulated results are compared with experimental ones and the life exponent of the material is obtained.

  • Polymeric composite insulators have been in use for outdoor insulation. However, our knowledge about their long-term performance in an outdoor environment is still very limited. Especially, these insulators are subjected to the environmental stress such as ultraviolet radiation, electrical stress, mechanical load, etc.. Hence, in this paper, we simulated the factors having influence on aging of polymer insulators using the combined aging test chamber. In order to evaluate an aging characteristics with time, we measured leakage current on these insulators to make out the degree of aging.

  • This research is to measure and analyze the thermal performance of the apartment structure and to evaluate and establish standards of thermal insulation defect in order to make the basic data necessary for determining the degree of the thermal performance degradation and for repairing and reinforcing the exterior wall of the existing apartment. The following conclusions could be derived thorough the investigation of outer wall temperature distribution and the insulation assesment experiments using a model of specimens for the apartment houses' outer walls. It was confirmed that for the thermal performance through the insulating material thicknesses 5cm, 8cm in walls, the thermal insulation thickened by 3cm, from 5cm to 8cm, but that the actual temperature difference reached only about 1 ~ 2℃. This implies that the thermal performance improvement using the thermal insulation in walls is not significant and that it is difficult to insulate the thermal bridge area.
