  • Solid insulation exposed to voltage is degraded by electrical tree process. And the degradation of the insulation is accelerated by voltage application. For this experimental, specimen of electrical tree model is made by XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene). And the size of the specimen is $7*5*7\;mm^3$. Distance of needle and plane is 2 mm. Voltages applied for acceleration test are 12 kV to 15 kV. And distribution characteristic of degraded stage is studied too. As a PD detecting and data process, discharge data acquire from PD detecting system (Biddle instrument). The system presents statistical distribution as phase resolved. Moreover the processing time of electrical tree is recorded to know the speed of degradation according to voltage.

  • In this paper, the electrical characteristics and hot-carrier induced electrical performance degradations of high-voltage LDMOSFET fabricated by the existing CMOS technology were investigated. Different from the low voltage CMOS device, the only specific on-resistance was degraded due to hot-carrier stressing in LDMOS transistor. However, other electrical parameters such as threshold voltage, transconductance, and saturated drain current were not degraded after stressing. The amount of on-resistance degradation of LDMOS transistor that was implanted n-well with $1.0\times10^{13}/cm^2$ was approximately 1.6 times more than that of LDMOS transistor implanted n-well with $1.0\times10^{12}/cm^2$. Similar to low voltage CMOS device, the peak on-resistance degradation in LDMOS device was observed at gate voltage of 2.2V while the drain applied voltage was 50V. It means that the maximum impact ionization at the drain junction occurs at the gate voltage of 2.2V applying the drain voltage of 50V.

  • In this study, we measured the leakage current at $30{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ and $90{\sim}170^{\circ}C$ under a voltage of 200~980 V applied to samples (ordinary temperature) and polyamide film specimens degraded at $170^{\circ}C$ for 20 minute respectively. After the specimen was degraded at $130^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$, a voltage of 200 to 800 V was applied for 10 to 60 minutes. The measurement of the leakage current resulted in the following conclusions. In the case of using Al and Cu as the main electrode, it was confirmed that the leakage current also increased in high temperatures as the voltage increased. Regardless of the type of main electrode, when the temperature was constant at $130^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$, the leakage current increased as the voltage increased, and gradually decreased with time. As a result of the FTIR measurement, the main absorption of the infrared absorption spectrum was C=O at about $1650cm^{-1}$ and N-H diagonal vibration occurred at around $1550cm^{-1}$. There was no change in the material, so no effect of temperature was observed. By the results of SEM measurements, as the temperature of degradation increases, cracks in the specimen disappear. This may be because the amide bond (-CO-NH-) is absorbed by the material.

  • Material exposure experiments were performed to evaluate the relationship between air pollution and material corrosion rates based on collaboration with researchers in China, Japan, and Korea. Qualitative and quantitative atmospheric corrosion was estimated from damage caused to bronze, copper, steel, marble, cedar, cypress, and lacquer plates exposed to outdoor and indoor conditions in certain East Asian cities. The effects of atmospheric and meteorological factors on the damage to the copper plates and marble pieces were estimated using a regression analysis. The results indicated that sulfur dioxide produced the most destruction of the materials, especially in South Korea and China. In Japan, the copper plates were damaged as a result of natural conditions and sea salt. Copper was also found to be damaged by the surface deposition of sulfur and chlorine. Meanwhile, marble was substantially degraded by gaseous sulfur dioxide, yet sulfate ions in rain had no effect. Accordingly, the analysis of air pollution from the perspective of material damage was determined to be very useful in evaluating and substantiating the intensity of air pollution in East Asia.

  • Many studies have been done on the application of residual charge measurement in cable degradation diagnosis. In this paper, the behavior of residual charges measured with water-tree degraded XLPE sheets and cable are discussed. At charge injection process, the charge is injected by applying dc voltage as a conventional method, suddenly cut-off ac voltage or impulse voltage. Therefore the residual charge is influenced by the applying process. At charge release process, transient dc current flows when applying ac high voltage and also ac high voltage superimposed to dc low voltage. From the results, new diagnosis method is suggested.

  • The frequency dependency of Rayleigh surface wave is investigated indirectly by measuring the angular dependency of the backward radiation of the incident ultrasonic wave in two kinds of degraded specimens by scuffing or corrosion. Then, the frequency dependency is compared with the residual stress distribution or the corrosion-fatigue characteristics for the scuffed or corroded specimens, respectively. The width of the backward radiation profile increases with the increase of the variation in residual stress distribution for the scuffed specimens. In the corroded specimens, the profile width decreases with the increase of the effective aging layer thickness and is inversely proportional to the exponent, m, in the Paris' law that can predict the crack size increase due to fatigue. The result observed in this study demonstrates high potential of backward radiated ultrasound as a tool for nondestructive evaluation of subsurface gradient of material degradation generated by scuffing or corrosion.

  • The ferroelectric properties of the $Pt/PZT(Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3)/Pt$ capacitors are severely degraded when they are annealed in hydrogen-containing environment. Hydrogen atoms created by the catalytic reaction of Pt top electrode during annealing in hydrogen ambient penetrate into PZT films and generate oxygen vacancies by the reduction of the PZT films, which is likely to cause the degradation. The degree of hydrogen-induced degradation and the direction of voltage shift in P-E curves of the pre-poled PZT capacitors after annealing in hydrogen ambient is dependent on the polarity of the pre-poling voltage. This implies that oxygen vacancies causing hydrogen induced degradation are generated by hydrogen ions having a polarity. The degraded ferroelectricity of the PZT capacitors can be effectively recovered by the shift of oxygen vacancies toward the Pt top electrode interface during post-annealing in oxygen environment with applying negative unipolar stressing.

  • The tracking characteristics of silicon rubber degraded by accelerated outdoor exposure employing a weather-o-meter have been investigated. The tracking test was performed according to IEC Publ.587 but the concentration of conductive material was two times higher than the IEC standard in order to accelerate the tracking failure. The number of large effective scintillation and the current of high voltage circuit were measured by changing two signals as voltage signals. It was fiund that the increase of exposure time resulted in the reduction of tracking resistivity except the fact that the specimens slightly degraded within 200 hours has slightly increased the duration time.

  • There has been recent demand for extending the life of age-degraded structures and equipment by such techniques as diagnosis, maintenance, safety assessment, and estimating residual life on iron-making plants and hydraulic, thermal, and nuclear power plants. These techniques take into account comprehensive scenarios that may cause malfunction and structural damage and allow an assessment of risk based on the likely scenarios. In particular the safety assessment and residual life estimation of age-degraded ships and equipment facilities require consideration of various factors such as mechanical and thermal stresses, corrosion, hardness, load variation due to changes of operating condition, crack generation and strength reduction of material by fatigue. In this study, a detail thermal stress analysis, one of useful techniques of safety assessment and maintenance, is performed on a blast furnace by using general FEM code (MSC/NASTRAN).

  • Fracture toughness({TEX}$J_{IC}${/TEX}) on 304 austenitic stainless steel weldments artificially degraded for long period under SCC environments were evaluated to investigate its reliability and environmental characteristics. Electro-chemical polarization tests were previously carried out to evaluate corrosion susceptiblility of weldment, and stress corrosion cracking was tested under various conditions of 3.5wt.% NaCl solution, the temperature of $25^{\circ}$C and $95^{\circ}$C, and oxygen concentration during 3000hours. From the results obtained, it was found that 304 stainless steel weldment was so susceptible under high temperature and high oxygen concentration of 3.5wt.% NaCl solution, and fracture toughness({TEX}$J_{IC}${/TEX}) was also considerably reduced by material degradation.
