  • The purpose of this study is to develop the evaluation criteria for students' research reports on online science inquiry problems that promote thinking abilities. The steps of developing the evaluation criteria are as follows; First, based on previous study results and literature review, the evaluation categories of the science inquiry contents were determined: 1) knowledge, 2) logical and analytical thinking, 3) critical thinking, 4) science process skills, 5) problem-solving, and 6) creative thinking. Second, evaluation criteria are developed according to the following steps: 1) define each category, 2) identify sub-category, 3) develop evaluation criteria for all categories that could serve as guidelines in the development of scoring rubrics, and 4) expert validation processes were performed. Finally, the usability test for these evaluation categories and criteria were done by being applied to the development of real scoring rubrics for 24 problems included in e-learning contents. Then the users' feedbacks were filed and the implications of this study were discussed.

  • Information sharing behavior in the Internet has raised much interest. Recently, social network sites provide a new information sharing channel for the users who want to connect with others based on common social background or tastes. Especially, we focus that a social network site becomes one of major routes for information sharing about socially influential issues. Therefore, studying how information is diffused via a social network site may give theoretically, practically significant implication. Based on the assertion, we investigated user's behavior to mediate other user's information messages. We define information mediating behavior as concurrent actions of filtering and distributing behavior of the digital content that is originated from one of the connected users. In this study, we intended to understand the effects of information mediating behavior, and tried to understand characteristics of re-mediating of previously mediated information. Using an agent-based simulation model, we found that information mediating behavior increased the extent of information diffusion significantly. In addition, even a small degree of mediating probability could boost up the level of information diffusion in the case of a re-mediating condition. We believe that those findings provide remarkable insight of research and business application on both of information sharing and diffusion in a social network site.

  • The safe and efficient operation of nuclear plants is recognized to be accomplished through the application of plant automation using digital technology, which is one of main targets of the next generation nuclear plants. For plant level automation, it is first required that each major subsystem be digitalized, and the steam generator water level control system is discussed in this study. The transfer functions between inputs and the level are derived by employing the thermal hydraulic model of the steam generator and are applied to the analysis of the current three-element control system. Since the control scheme in this study includes the steam generator itself as a process plant, the system order is high and the numerical instability arises in digitalizing. Together with this, the unreliability of the feedwater feedback signal at low power level leads to the proposal of a two-element control system with a proper digital controller. The digital PI controller developed for this system has the initial power adaptive gain and integration time constant. And it makes the overall system response satisfy the stability and other necessary control specifications simultaneously. Since the two-element control system using this controller depends on the initial power only, it is simple to define and it shows a similar level response behavior to that of its corresponding analog system.

  • In the elastic wave equations, both horizontal and vertical displacements are defined. Since we can measure both the horizontal and vertical displacements in field acquisition, these displacements compose a displacement vector. In this study, we propose a frequency-domain elastic waveform inversion technique taking advantage of the magnitudes of displacement vectors to define objective function. When we apply this displacement-vector objective function to the frequency-domain waveform inversion, the inversion process naturally incorporates the back-propagation algorithm. Through the inversion examples with the Marmousi model and the SEG/EAGE salt model, we could note that the RMS error of the solution obtained by our algorithm decreased more stably than that of the conventional method. Particularly, the density of the Marmousi model and the low-velocity sub-salt zone of the SEG/EAGE salt model were successfully recovered. Since the gradient direction obtained from the proposed objective function is numerically unstable, we need additional study to stabilize the gradient direction. In order to perform the waveform inversion using the displacementvector objective function, it is necessary to acquire multi-component data. Hence, more rigorous study should be continued for the multi-component land acquisition or OBC (Ocean Bottom Cable) multi-component survey.

  • The roadmap-based planning is a path planning method which is used widely for a goal-directed movement in Robotics and has been applied to the world of computer animation such as computer games. However it is unnatural for computer characters to follow the path planned by the roadmap method as it is performed in Robotics. Flocking which is used for realistic and natural movements in computer animation enables character's movement by using a few simple rules without planning unlike the roadmap method. However it is impossible to achieve a goal-directed movement with flocking only because it does not keep states. In this paper we propose a simulation method which combines planning based on the road map with reactive actions for natural movements along the path planned. We define and implement steering behaviors for a leader which are needed to follow the trajectory naturally by analysing characteristics of roadmap-based paths and for the rest of members which follow the leader in various manners by detecting obstacles. The simulations are performed and demonstrated by using the implemented steering behaviors on every possible combination of roadmap-based path planning methods and models of configuration spaces. We also show that the detection of obstacle-collisions can be done effectively because paths are planned in the configuration space in which a moving object is reduced to a point.

  • The hardness of corrugated packaging box decreased during storage period because of high humidity. Therefore, the strength-decreasing factor of corrugated packaging box had to be investigated to determine the compression strength of the corrugated packaging box. This study was conducted to define the characteristics of moisture absorption as well as compression strength of corrugated fiberboard. (1) The moisture content of the corrugated fiberboard was rarely influenced by the kinds of raw materials and water repellent. However, the moisture adsorption of the corrugated fiberboard was shown to be clearly affected by air temperature changes. (2) The moisture content of the corrugated fiberboard was significantly affected by relative humidity. The moisture adsorption of corrugated fiberboard was also greatly influenced by composition of raw materials rather than water repellent. The results indicated that the improvement of raw materials was more effective than the increase of water repellent of corrugated fiberboard to reduce the moisture adsorption of the corrugated fiberboard. (3) The vertical compression strength was significantly decreased with increasing relative humidity. The reduction rate of vertical compression strength was not charged with the increase of relative humidity, which was regardless of kinds of corrugated fiberboard. (4) For improving the strength of the corrugated packaging box, new technique should be found to develop better quality of raw materials. Moreover, the physical construction of corrugated packaging box should be clearly understood because the corrugated packaging box for the agricultural products was usually used for the circumstances of high humidity and low air temperature

  • The changes in sensory and mechanical texture of chewing gum during storage at various relative humidity were studied to define the quality index for the prediction of shelf-life. The initial moisture content of chewing gum was 2.57% (dry basis). The BET monolayer value at $a_{w}$ 0.19 was calculated to be 1.57% (dry basis). The sensory scores of chewing gum were closely correlated with moisture content and instrumental texture parameters with 0.1% significant level. Therefore the quality of stored chewing gum was directly related with moisture content above BET monolayer. The products became organoleptically acceptable in the range of moisture content $2.17{\sim}3.16%(dry basis)$. This range of moisture content ie equivalent to the ranges of instrumental parameter, fracture force$0.8{\sim}1.8{\times}10^{7}$, fracture modulus $1.1{\sim}2.4{\times}10^{8}$, puncture force $0.5{\sim}1.1{\times}10^{7}[dyne/cm^{2}]$ and brittleness $0.7{\sim}1.4{\times}10^{8}[dyne/cm^{3}]$, respectively.

  • The present study was directed to define the triglyceride composition of pine nut oil. The triglycerides were separated from pine nut oil by thin layer chromatography, and fractionated by high performance liquid chromatography on the basis of partition numbers. Each of these collected fractions were fractionated again by gas liquid chromatography (GLC) according to the acyl carbon number of the triglyceride, and fatty acid composition of the triglyceride was also analyzed by GLC. The pine nut oil consisted of thirty two kinds of triglycerides, and the major triglycerides of pine nut oil were those of $(C_{18:2},\;C_{18:2},\;C_{18:3}\;;\;34.9%)$, $(C_{18:1},\;C_{18:2},\;C_{18:3}\;;\;10.8%)$, $(C_{18:1},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{18:2}\;;\;9.9%)$, $(C_{18:1},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{18:1}\;;\;6.5%)$, $(C_{18:1},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{18:2}\;;\;6.3%)$, $(C_{18:1},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{18:3}\;;\;4.8%)$, $(C_{16:0},\;C_{18:2},\;C_{18:3}\;;\;3.3%)$, $(C_{18:0},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{18:2}\;;\;2.7%)$, $(C_{16:0},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{18:2}\;;\;2.6%)$, $(C_{16:0},\;C_{18:2},\;C_{18:2}\;;\;2.2%)$, $(C_{16:0},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{18:3}\;;\;1.9%)$, $(C_{16:0},\;C_{18:2},\;C_{18:2}\;;\;1.7%)$, $(C_{16:0},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{18:1}\;;\;1.7%)$, $(C_{18:1},\;C_{18:3},\;C_{18:3}\;;\;1.5%)$.

  • ERM proteins transfer the methyl group to $A_{2058}$ in 23S rRNA to confer the resistance to MLS (macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B) antibiotics on microorganism ranging from antibiotic producers to pathogens. To define the functional role of peptide segment encompassing amino acid residues 1 to 25 in NTER (N-terminal end region) of ErmSF, one of the ERM proteins, DNA fragment encoding mutant protein deprived of that peptide was cloned and overexpressed in E. coli to obtain a purified soluble form protein to the apparent homogeneity in the yield of 12.65 mg per liter of culture. The in vitro activity of mutant protein was found to be 85% compared to wild type ErmSF, suggesting that this peptide interact with substrate to affect the enzyme activity. This diminished activity of mutant protein caused the delayed expression of antibiotic resistance in vivo, that at fIrst cells expressing mutant protein showed the retarded growth due to the antibiotic action but with time cells inhibited by antibiotic gradually recovered the viability to exert the resistance to the same extent as those with wild type protein.
