  • Reliability has been considered as an important design measure in various industrial systems. We discuss a reliability optimization problem with component choices (ROP-CC) subject to a budget constraint. This problem has been known as a NP-hard problem in the reliability design fields. Several researchers have been working to find the optimal solution through different heuristic methods. In this paper, we describe our development of simulated annealing (SA) and tabu search (TS) algorithms and a reoptimization procedure of the two algorithms for solving the problem. Experimental results for some examples are shown to evaluate the performance of these methods. We compare the results with the solutions of a previous study which used ant system (AS) and the global optimal solution of each example obtained through an optimization package, CPLEX 9.1. The computational results indicate that the developed algorithms outperform the previous results.

  • Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is widely used in a variety of fields because of its ability to be programmed as desired. However, when an externally implemented program is loaded on FPGA in the form of a bitstream, there is a possibility that hardware Trojans which cause malfunctions or leak information may be included. For this reason, bitstream reverse engineering is essential, and therefore related research has been conducted, such as BIL. In this paper, we analyze the BIL bitstream reverse engineering tool, which is the most representative algorithm, regarding its performance and limitations.

  • This paper present, the result of the guidance and control law for a course correction munitions(CCM) with 2sets of canards positioned in the rotating nose section. The nonlinear simulation model of the CCM was developed based on 7DOF equation of motion. The ability of correcting position was verified by open-loop control input with nonlinear model. The guidance and control command was constructed by reference trajectory which can be obtained with no control. Finally, the performance of the guidance and control law was evaluated through Monte-carlo simulation. The CEP(Circular Error Probability) was obtained by considering the errors in muzzle velocity, aerodynamic coefficient, wind, elevation and azimuth angle and density.

  • For inertial navigation systems, initial information such as position, velocity and attitude is required for navigation. Self-alignment is the process to determine initial attitude on stationary condition using inertial measurements such as accelerations and angular rates. The accuracy of self-alignment is determined by inertial sensor error. As soon as an inertial navigation system is powered on, the temperature of accelerometer rises rapidly until temperature stabilization. It causes acceleration error which is called temperature stabilizing error of accelerometer. Therefore, temperature stabilizing error degrades the alignment accuracy and also increases alignment time. This paper suggests a method to calculate azimuthal attitude using curve fitting of horizontal control angular rate in fixed-gain self-alignment. It is verified by simulation and experiment that the accuracy is improved and the alignment time is reduced using the proposed method under existence of the temperature stabilizing error.

  • The vehicle-mounted radar system (VMRS) including its electronic parts must be designed so that its performance is maintained under varying environmental conditions. The important aspects are typically weight and safety. Since many rotating VMRSs have been developed, discussion about the vibration and shock requirements for the transportation conditions has occurred: in addition, the dynamic unpaved, paved, and off-road effects have been emphasized with respect to lightweight designs. A lightweight-design VMRS should be capable of operating stably under the wind condition with the support of the vehicle structure. In this paper, a structural analysis regarding the support of the VMRS is performed, whereby the real-load conditions for three types of road and pressure were employed in terms of the wind condition. The structural analysis for the safety of the VMRS is performed, and the structural-integrity analytical processes of the VMRS are presented for different load conditions.

  • Electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) are promising candidates for energy storage devices in electronic applications. An EDLC yields high power density but has low specific capacitance. Carbon material is used in EDLCs owing to its large specific surface area, large pore volume, and good mechanical stability. Consequently, the use of carbon materials for EDLC electrodes has attracted considerable research interest. In this paper, in order to evaluate the electrochemical performance, graphene is used as an EDLC electrode with flake sizes of 3, 12, and 60 nm. The surface characteristic and electrochemical properties of graphene were investigated using SEM, BET, and cyclic voltammetry. The specific capacitance of the graphene based EDLC was measured in a 1 M $TEABF_4/ACN$ electrolyte at the scan rates of 2, 10, and 50 mV/s. The 3 nm graphene electrode had the highest specific capacitance (68.9 F/g) compared to other samples. This result was attributed to graphene's large surface area and meso-pore volume. Therefore, large surface area and meso-pore volume effectively enhances the specific capacitance of EDLCs.

  • Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) as advanced heterogeneous composite materials have a higher performance than a conventional composite or bimaterial composite under some severe environments. As a heterogeneous material, FGM is commonly used in spacecraft, defense, nuclear and automotive industries due to its excellent properties. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the stress distribution and crack behaviors by the multiscale simulation. FGM contains two or more than two materials that the composition is structured continuously. Two types of FGM model are suggested, which are created by arbitrary prediction of the volume fraction and the exponential function. Aluminum as the metal matrix constituent and silicon carbide as the ceramic particle constituent are structured gradually by two types and the three point bending test also estimated. Moreover, two kinds of crack location were introduced in order to get the influences of material property distribution on the stress intensity factor. From the results we found that the stress intensity factors are increased in the case from softer to stiffer material, while vice versa.

  • In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been developed and studied for various applications, including drone deliveries, broadcasting, scouting, crop dusting, and firefighting. To enable the wide use of UAVs, their exact aeroacoustic characteristics must be assessed. In this study, a noise prediction method for a ducted fan UAV with complicated geometry was developed. In general, calculation efficiency is increased by simulating a ducted fan UAV without the struts that fix the fuselage to the ducts. However, numerical predictions of noise and aerodynamics differ according to whether struts are present. In terms of aerodynamic performance, the total thrust with and without struts is similar owing to the tendency of the thrust of a blade to offset the drag of the struts. However, in aeroacoustic simulations, the strut effect should be considered in order to predict the UAV's noise because noise from the blades can be changed by the strut effect. Modelling of the strut effect revealed that the dominant tonal noises were closely correlated with the blade passage frequency of the experimental results. Based on the successful detection of noise sources from a ducted fan UAV system, using the proposed noise contribution contour, methods for noise reduction can be suggested by comparing numerical results with measured noise profiles.

  • In the aerospace industry, we have produced various models according to operational conditions and the environment after development of the base model is completed. Therefore, when design change is necessary, there are modification and updating costs of the circuit whenever environment variables change. For these reasons, recently, in various fields, system designs that can flexibly respond to changing environmental conditions using field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are attracting attention, and the rapidly changing aerospace industry also uses FPGAs to organize the system environment. In this paper, we design the controller area network (CAN) intellectual property (IP) protocol used instead of the avionics protocol that includes ARINC-429 and MIL-STD-1553, which are not suitable for small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems at the register transistor logic (RTL) level, which does not depend on the FPGA vender, and we verify the performance. Consequentially, a Spartan 6 FPGA model-based system on chip (SoC) including an embedded system is constructed by using the designed CAN communications IP and Xilinx Microblaze, and the configured SoC only recorded an average 32% logic element usage rate in the Spartan 6 FPGA model.

  • This paper describes a relative navigation algorithm using PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) and heterogeneous sensor fusion. In order to perform relative navigation between a target and a chaser, a hardware system is constructed and simulations are conducted, using the relative navigation algorithm considering the hardware system. By analyzing errors through the simulations, advantages of using the heterogeneous sensor fusion are found. Finally, navigation performance is verified under an experimental environment established to obtain sensor data from the hardware system for data post-processing.
