  • As hegemonic rivalry between nations extends to the space domain, the race for pre-amption of low-Earth orbit is becoming intense. With the end of the U.S.-ROK missile guidelines, South Korea is focusing on establishing a space strategy for space security and developing space weapons systems. Nevertheless, there are challenges that need to be addressed to enhance its defense space power, such as a non-established acquisition process of space weapon system. This paper derived implications for the development of Korea's space defense capabilities using space operational concepts based on national security and space strategies. Improvement factors for process such as design test evaluation and Design Decision Review were then proposed for the acquisition of constellation satellites in the defense sector.

  • Electronic equipment mounted on military vehicles is exposed to external shocks and vibrations. This causes problems in tactical operation and also causes cost loss in equipment maintenance. Therefore, to optimize the test standards for military vehicles with vibration, dynamic characteristics should be analyzed and standardized through actual driving tests. In this paper, the internal structure of 2.5tons military vehicle is designed in the form of a drawer and lathe, and the dynamic characteristics are identified by experiment, and the design is proposed.

  • Purpose: In this study, a reliability prediction based reliability growth management is suggested especially for the early development phase of a system and the case study of surveillance system is given. Methods: The proposed reliability prediction based reliability growth management procedures consists of 7 Steps. In Step 1, the stages for reliability growth management are classified according to the major design changes. From Step 2 to Step 5, system reliability is predicted based on reliability structures and the predicted reliabilities of subsystems (Level 2) and modules (Level 3). At each stage, by comparing the predicted system reliability with that of the previous stage, the reliability growth of the system is checked in Step 6. In Step 7, when the predicted value of sustem reliability does not satisfy the reliability goal, some design alternatives are considered and suggested to improve the system reliability. Results: The proposed reliability prediction based reliability growth management can be an efficient alternative for managing reliability growth of a system in its early development phase. The case study shows that it is applicable to weapon system such as a surveillance system. Conclusion: In this study, the procedures for a reliability prediction based reliability growth management are proposed to satisfy the reliability goal of the system efficiently. And it is expected that the use of the proposed procedures would reduce, in the test and evaluation phase, the number of corrective actions and its cost as well.

  • EO GRD(Ground Resolved Distance) resolution of airborne EO/IR(Electro-Optical/Infrared) sensor is a critical factor in test and evaluation for EO sensor performance. We propose the laboratory measurement set-up for EO GRD by constructing optical collimator which includes integrated sphere, blackbody, equivalent 3-bar target and 6 DOF motion simulator. GRD is measured in the photographic imagery of bar targets by 3 different distances for 3 EO/IR sensors and the measured results were analyzed statistically. We found that at least 7 sheets of imagery are needed in order to obtain meaningful EO GRD. The result of statistical analysis shows that the distribution of the measured GRD is nearly symmetric about the average GRD, and the better imagery ratio above the average GRD is about 40~70%. Also from the best GRD analysis, it is estimated that the design goal for EO GRD should be 30% superior to the required GRD.

  • A Captive Flight Test(CFT) is used to verify the performance of missile component such as seeker and guiding algorithm of missile. Recently most of surface to air missile adapts multi-mode guidance method which include command guidance and active/passive guidance. A CFT system for missile system adapting multi-mode guidance method consists of pod equipment, command transmitting system and measuring system. In this paper, we proposed CFT system and testing method for missile which adapt multi-mode guidance, and system integration procedure by using distributed missile system integration method and procedure. The proposed CFT system and system integration method was applied to CFT of surface to air missile, and brought successful result.

  • In this paper, a X-Band T/R-module for SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems based on active phased array antennas is designed and fabricated. The T/R modules have a and width of more than 800 MHz centered at X-Band and support dual, switched polarizations. The output power of the module is 7 watts over a wide bandwidth. The noise figure is as low as 3.9 dB. Phase and amplitude are controlled by a 6-bit phase shifter and a 6-bit digital attenuator, respectively. Further the fabricated T/R module has est and calibration port with directional coupler and power divider. Highly integrated T/R module is achieved by using LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) multiple layer substrate. RMS gain error is less than 0.8 dB max. in Rx mode, and RMS phase error is less than $4^{\circ}$ max. in Rx/Tx phase under all operating frequency band, or the T/R module meet the required electrical performance m test. This structure an be applied to active phase array SAR Antennas.

  • This paper describes the design of model-based fault diagnosis software to apply to the propulsion system in tracked amphibious assault vehicle which consists of an engine, a transmission, a cooling system, and two waterjets. This software includes specific functions to detect the failures regarding sensor malfunctions, mechanical malfunctions, control errors, and communication errors. This software generates the proper malfunction codes which are classified as the warning and caution. In order to validate the fault diagnosis software, the manual and automatic test are performed using the test program with 32 test cases. Test results show that the designed fault diagnosis software is reliable and effective for applying to the propulsion system.

  • This study is to investigate the user behavior of defense development and test researchers working for A research institute to provide advanced library services. Based on the prior studies about the subject, survey through questionnaires were conducted, and the data analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Results of the analyses are as follows: The researchers generally gathered information 2 to 3 times per month. The major reason for information gathering was to solve problems and do their tasks. They considered accuracy of information as the most important factor when they gather information. Finding and selecting information sources were the most difficult task for them in retrieving, acquiring and using information. They have most frequently used digital materials (67%), printed materials next (26%), and non-book materials (6%). Internet was both the most frequently used and most satisfied information source for the researchers.

  • Air data systems measure airspeed, pressure altitude, angle of attack and angle of sideslip. These measurements are essential for operating flight control laws to ensure safe flights. Since the loss or corruption of air data measurements is considered as catastrophic, a high level of operational reliability needs to be achieved for air data systems. In the case of unmanned air vehicles, failure of any of air data sensors is more critical due to the absence of onboard pilot decision aid. This paper presents design of a dual redundancy air data system and the integration process for an unmanned air vehicle. The proposed dual-redundant architecture is based on two independent air data probes and redundancy management by central processing in two independent flight control computers. Starting from unit testing of single air data sensor, details are provided of system level tests used to meet overall requirements. Test results from system integration demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed process.
