Carbon-supported Pt catalyst systems containing defect adsorption sites on the anode of direct methanol fuel cells were investigated, to elucidate the mechanisms of H2 dissociation and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to determine the effect of defect sites located neighboring to or distant from the Pt catalyst on H2 and CO adsorption properties, based on electronic properties such as adsorption energy and electronic band gap. Interestingly, the presence of neighboring defect sites led to a reduction of H2 dissociation and CO poisoning due to atomic Pt filling the defect sites. At distant sites, H2 dissociation was active on Pt, but CO filled the defect sites to form carbon π-π bonds, thus enhancing the oxidation of the carbon surface. It should be noted that defect sites can cause CO poisoning, thereby deactivating the anode gradually.

The defect sites on chemical vapor deposition grown graphene are investigated through the selective electrochemical deposition (SED) of Au nanoparticles. For SED of Au nanoparticles, an engineered potential pulse is applied to the working electrode versus the reference electrode, thereby highlighting the defect sites, which are more reactive relative to the pristine surface. Most defect sites decorated by Au nanoparticles are situated along the Cu grain boundaries, implying that the origin of the defects lies in the synthesis of uneven graphene layers on the rough Cu surface.
The importance of stepped single-crystal surfaces as model catalysts has been well recognized [1]. We re-investigated the adsorption properties of $H_2$ and CO, most important species in platinum-based catalysts, on nearly defect-free and highly stepped surfaces of one and the same Pt(111) crystal. While both being symmetric and single-peaked from the nearly defect-free surface, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) spectra from the highly stepped surface saturated at 90 K with H and CO were triply- and doubly-peaked, respectively. Once pre-adsorbed, CO preempted step and then terrace sites, inhibiting the dissociative $H_2$ adsorption completely. Pre-adsorbed H inhibited the CO adsorption on terrace sites only, leaving defect sites intact for CO adsorption even at the saturation H precoverage. On defect-free Pt(111), while pre-adsorbed CO inhibited the dissociative $H_2$ adsorption completely, pre-adsorbed H could not inhibit the CO adsorption completely. These intriguing, but interesting results are discussed in terms of energetics/kinetics and the role of surface step sites in the dissociative adsorption of $H_2$ on Pt(111) [2].
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the typical sites and patterns of peri-implant bone defects on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, as well as to evaluate the detectability of the identified bone defects on panoramic images. Materials and Methods: The study population included 114 patients with a total of 367 implant fixtures. CBCT images were used to assess the presence or absence of bone defects around each implant fixture at the mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual sites. Based on the number of defect sites, the presentations of the peri-implant bone defects were categorized into 3 patterns: 1 site, 2 or 3 sites, and circumferential bone defects. Two observers independently evaluated the presence or absence of bone defects on panoramic images. The bone defect detection rate on these images was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic analysis. Results: Of the 367 implants studied, 167 (45.5%) had at least 1 site with a confirmed bone defect. The most common type of defect was circumferential, affecting 107 of the 167 implants(64.1%). Implants were most frequently placed in the mandibular molar region. The prevalence of bone defects was greatest in the maxillary premolar and mandibular molar regions. The highest kappa value was associated with the mandibular premolar region. Conclusion: The typical bone defect pattern observed was a circumferential defect surrounding the implant. The detection rate was generally higher in the molar region than in the anterior region. However, the capacity to detect partial bone defects using panoramic imaging was determined to be poor.
Background and Objectives: Fibula is the flap of choice for reconstruction of wide mandible defects after tumor ablation surgery. In mandible reconstruction, restoring the mandible frame to provide mandibular contour and dental arch while restoring masticatory function are important. Even though vascularized fibula can be osteotomized freely, proper design and flap insetting is not easy because of its three dimensional structure and difference in design according to the defect sites. We reviewed patients who underwent mandible reconstruction with fibular flaps according to the defect sites and suggest proper modification methods of fibular flap according to the various defects sites after tumor ablation surgery. Materials and Methods: Twelve consecutive mandible reconstruction with fibular free flaps were performed for defects after tumor ablation surgery. Patients were classified into 4 groups according to the type of mandibular defect(Group 1 : defect on central segment including symphysis, Group 2 : defect on lateral segment(with or without central segment) confined to body, Group 3 : defect on body and ascending ramus that does not include the condyle, Group 4 : defect including the condyle). Results: We suggest different modification methods of fibular free flap for each patient group. Group 1, 3 ; contour by using multiple closing wedge osteotomy. Group 2 ; single or double barrel reconstruction without wedge osteotomy. Group 4 ; contour using single or multiple wedge osteotomy and condylar reconstruction with costochondral graft. Conclusion: Fibular free flaps can be contoured to any desired shape after multiple osteotomies to restore various mandibular defects. It is a reliable and versatile method for reconstruction of mandibular defects after tumor ablation surgery.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether removal of gingival epithelium with pulsed Nd :YAG laser could inhibit the downgrowth of junctional epithelium after alloplastic material grafting in periodontal bone defect. The periodontal bone defects were created surgically on the palatal aspect of the upper right and left molar teeth in 30 rats and filled with resorbable calcium carbonate($Biocoral\;450^{(R)}$: Inoteb, France). The control sites(right molar area) was sutured. The test side (left molar area) received controlled deepithelization of the oral and sulcular epithelium with pulsed Nd:YAG laser($Sunrise\;Maste^{(R)}$: Sunrise Technologies, U.S.A.) under the mode of 1.75W, 15Hz, 116mJ/pulse and was sutured. The control and test sites were evaluated clinically and histologically, at 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days postoperation. Clinically, the gingiva showed normal color and shape at the 5th day in the control site and at the 10th day in the test sites. Histologically, the junctional epithelium was formed at the 7th day in the control sites and at the 14th day in the test sites, and the long JE attachment were observed at the 28th day in both sites. The attachment of connective tissue to root surface was observed initially at the 7th day in the control sites and at the 14th day in the test sites, and completed at the 28th day in both sites. In summary, these results showed that the removal of oral epithelium using pulsed Nd:YAG Laser could not prevent epithelial downgrowth after alloplastic material implantation in rat periodontal bone defect.
Purpose: A number of techniques and materials have been used for periodontal regeneration and bone graft procedures with guided tissue regeneration(GTR) have been suggested as alternatives to osseous surgery in the management of local infra-bony defects. However, the long-term stability and treatment outcome following bone graft procedure of infra-bony defects is poorly documented. The purpose of this study was to assess radiographic change in infra-bony defects over 2 years after bone graft procedures with various graft materials. Material and Methods: Patients attending the department of periodontics of Kyungpook National University Hospital were studied. Patients showed clinical and radiographic evidence of infra-bony defect(s). 44 sites of 34 patients aged 31 to 69 (mean age 48.3) were treated by bone graft procedure with a bone graft material. Baseline and 2-year follow-up radiographs were collected and evaluated for this study. Radiographic assessment includes a bone fill, bone crest change, defect resolution, and % of defect resolution. Pre- and post-treatment differences between variables (maxilla and mandible, defect depth, defect angle, bone graft materials) using the paired t-test were examined. Result: We observed $1.15{\pm}1.95\;mm$ of bone fill, $0.40{\pm}1.19\;mm$ of crestal resorption, $1.55{\pm}1.77\;mm$ of defect resolution, and $40{\pm}44%$ of percentage of defect resolution. Deeper initial defect depth, narrower initial defect angle showed significantly greater bone fill, defect resolution, and % of defect resolution. But no significant difference was observed in graft sites and graft materials. Conclusion: If good oral hygiene maintenance and periodic recall check of patients is assured, bone graft procedure using various graft materials is one of the appropriate treatment modality for regenerative therapy of infra-bony defects.
Adorption of nitric oxide on the Pt(III) surface sputtered by Ar-ion has been studied using thermal desorption spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Ar-ion sputtering creates a precursor state of ($NO\beta$ stage) adsorbe dat defect sites. The precursor state is characterized by the terminal bent species . At low coverge mos 샐 adsorbed NO dissociates . And as increasing the coverage, the fraction of dissociation remains about 80%.
Computer-based atomistic simulation methods are applied to address quantitatively the crystal defect chemistry of strontium hexaaluminate, SrAl/sub 12/O/sub 19/. Our calculations show that oxygen Frenkel disorder is the dominant intrinsic defect mode to be expected in the multi-component oxide, though Schottky disorder may also exist. When La and Mg enter into SrAl/sub 12/O/sub 19/. Mg prefers to occupy Al(3)4f tetrahedral sites in the magnetoplumbite structure. Our calculations also indicate that O/sub Sr/ defect is improbable in the structure.
In oral and maxillofacial surgery, bone graft is very important procedure for functional and esthetic reconstruction. So, many researcher studied about bone graft material like autogenous bone, allograft bone and artificial bone materials. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quantity of bone generation induced by $Grafton^{(R)}$ graft, human allogenic demineralized bone matrix. Total 24 sites of artificial bony defects prepared using trephin bur(diameter 8 mm) on parietal bone of six adult New Zealand White rabbits. Experimental group had six defect sites which grafted $Grafton^{(R)}$(0.1 cc). Active control group had nine defect sites, into which fresh autogenous bone harvested from own parietal bone was grafted and passive control group had nine defect sites without bone graft. After six weeks postoperatively, the rabbits were sacrificed. The defects and surrounding tissue were harvested and decalcified in 10% EDTA, 10% foamic-acid. Specimens were stained with H&E. New bone area percentage in whole defect area was measured by IMT(VT) image analysis program. Quantity of bone by $Grafton^{(R)}$ graft was smaller than that of autograft and larger than that of empty defects. In histologic view $Grafton^{(R)}$ graft site and autograft site showed similar healing progress but it was observed that newly formed bone in active control group was more mature. In empty defect, quantity and thickness of new bone formation was smaller than in $Grafton^{(R)}$-grafted defect. $Grafton^{(R)}$ is supposed to be a useful bone graft material instead of autogenous bone if proper maintenance for graft material stability and enough healing time were obtained.
