  • Magnesium and magnesium alloys, the lightest structural materials, have been received plenty of global attention recently. These alloys could be applied in various fields, especially the electronics industry, because of their excellent electromagnetic interference shielding. However, the welding technique of magnesium alloys has not been established. This study is related to the welding of AZ31B magnesium alloy by a short-pulsed a Nd:YAG laser. Two types of pulse waves, square pulse and variable pulse, were used to control weld defects. Results show that the crack and porosity, generated in the weld, had not been controlled by general square pulse. But through the application of variable pulse, the defects could be prevented and the good weld zone was obtained.

  • The optical properties of III-V compound semiconductor structure was investgated by photoreflectance (PR). The results show two signals at 1.42 and 1.73eV. These are attributed to the bandgap energy of GaAs, AlGaAs, respectively. Also, AlGaAs region showed weak signal. This signal is attributed to carbon or si defect.

  • The aim of FMEA method which is already generalized in the industry engineering is to grasp a possibility that defect forms will appear. And it is a means of prevention step to let person remove obstacles which have an influence on customers beforehand in order. The two parts of FMEA are Design FMEA which we prepare in an early stage and Process FMEA which we prepare in time previous to mass production. This Study apply Process FMEA to execution fields of the construction industry.

  • In this paper, an inspection mechanism based on laser scattering has been developed for the surface evaluation of infrared cut-off filters, and optimum conditions of laser scattering are determined using the design of experiment. First of all, attributes and influence factors of laser scattering are investigated and then a laser scattering inspection mechanism is newly designed based on analyses of laser scattering parameters. Also, Taguchi method, one of experimental designs, is used for the optimum condition selection of laser scattering parameters and the optimum condition is determined in order to maximize the detection capability of surface defects. Experiments show that the proposed method is useful in a consistent and effective defect detection and can be applied to surface evaluation processes in manufacturing.

  • We have investigated the coupling characteristics of localized modes of line defect i.e., guided modes, in photonic crystals. The parity of the coupled guided modes is not conserved when the distance between the line defects changes. By comparing the coupling characteristics of localized modes without the oscillatory nature such as cavity modes of metallic Fabry-Parot cavities with those of localized modes in photonic crystals, we confirmed that this parity nonconservation is attributed to the oscillatory nature of the evanescent waves of localized modes in photonic crystals.

  • In this paper, molecular dynamics simulations are performed to analyze the adhesion between a diamond mould and a copper substrate in diamond nanoimprint lithography. The diamond nanoimprint lithography process is simplified as punch-type nanoindentation. The copper substrates are assumed to monocrystalline and defect free and consist of $22500\~80000$ atoms depending on their dimension. The diamond moulds consist of 916 or 2414 atoms, which is assumed to be rigid. The consistent results lot the maximum normal force and the adhesion force are obtained regardless of the size of substrates and the adhesion hysteresis is shown in all cases. It is found that the friction acting on the sidewalls of the mould affects the adhesion significantly when the mould is released from the substrate.

  • In this study, the finite element method was used to analyze the distribution of the adhesive shear stresses in the single-lap bonded joint of two plates 2024-T3 aluminum with and without defects. The effects of the adhesive properties (shear modulus, the thickness and the length of the adhesive were highlighted. The results prove that the shear stresses are located on the free edges of the adhesively bonding region, and reach maximum values near the defect, because the concentration of high stress occurs near this area.

  • This paper examined the stability of high-dense dislocation substructures (HDDSs) associated with martensite laths in High Cr steels supposed to be used for FBR, based on a series of dislocation dynamics (DD) simulations. The DD simulations considered interactions of dislocations with impurity atoms and precipitates which substantially stabilize the structure. For simulating the dissociation processes, a point defect model is developed and implemented into a discrete DD code. Wall structure composed of high dense dislocations with and without small precipitates were artificially constructed in a simulation cell, and the stability/instability conditions of the walls were systematically investigated in the light of experimentally observed coarsening behavior of the precipitates, i.e., stress dependency of the coarsening rate and the effect of external stress. The effect of stress-dependent coarsening of the precipitates together with application of external stress on the subsequent behavior of initially stabilized dislocation structures was examined.

  • This study is a review paper on powders for makeup cosmetics. They play the roles of the camouflage of skin defect, UV screening, skin adhesion, makeup sustainability, and skin protection. This function is endowed on the powders by shape control, surface treatment, and encapsulation. The future powders are expected to be evolved into the smart model responding to the environmental change.
