  • In this paper, rotating bending fatigue tests have been carried out to investigate the growth behabiors of surface fatigue crack initiated from a small artificial surface defect, that might exist in real structures, on 2024-T3 and 6:4 brass. The test results are analysed in the viewpoints of both strength of materials and fracture mechanics, it can be concluded as follows. The effect of a small artificial surface defect upon the fatigue strength is very large. The sensitivity of 2024-T3 on the defect is higher than that of 6:4 brass. The growth behavior of the surface fatigue crack of 2024-T3 is different from that of 6:4 brass. The growth rate of the surface fatigue crack of 2024-T3 is considerably rapid in the early stage of the fatigue life and apt to decrease in the later stage. It was impossible to establish a unifying approach in the analysis of crack growth begabior of 2024-T3 and 6:4 brass using the maximum stress intensity factor because of their dependence on stress level. But if the elastic strain and cyclic total strain intensity factor range were applied to obtain the growth rate of surface fatigue cracks of the materials, the data were found to be nearly coincided.

  • This paper deals with inspect algorithm using visual system. One of the major problems that arise during polymer production is the estimation of the noise of the color product.(bad pallets) An erroneous output can cause a lot of losses (production and financial losses). Therefore new methods for real-time inspection of the noise are demanded. For this reason, we have presented a development of vision system algorithm for the defect inspection of PE color pallets. First of all, in order to detect the edge of object, the differential filter is used. And we apply to the labelling algorithm for feature extraction. This algorithm is designed for the defect inspection of pallets. The labelling algorithm permits to separate all of the connected components appearing on the pallets. Labelling the connected regions of a image is a fundamental computation in image analysis and machine vision, with a large number of application. Also, we suggested vision processing program in window environment. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposal algorithm.

  • A defect detection test was performed for a conductor using a amorphous wire sensor head. A uniform magnetic field was applied in the space between the most inner conductors of a spiral-typed coil. The conductor with a defect was placed on the space between the most inner conductors of spiral-typed coil. The defect can be detected from the differences of induced voltage measured in the vicinity of gap of the conductor. The induced voltage difference of 2.5mV was measured in the gap vicinity of the 1mm thick conductor having 0.5mm gap in the frequency region of 100kHz~600kHz.

  • A study on optimal shape selection of a mechanical fastening for the repair of crack defect of ROK Air Force F-5 fighter wing was conducted. The crack defect occurred in the spar of the wing, and the technical manual does not specify the repair method. However, ROK Air Force decided to develop a repair technology for this defect in consideration of various logistic conditions. Three repair shapes for the proper repair were devised and the finite element analysis was performed to examine the structural safety of these three connection members. As a result of the structural safety review, two connection members except one were structurally safe with safety margins over zero because the calculated stress values were at or below the yield strength level. Therefore, two connection members were determined to be able to use for repair under the condition that the aircraft operated within the design limit load. The results of this study would be very useful if the same defect occurs in long-term aircraft operated by the ROK Air Force.

  • Nowadays software defect prediction (SDP) is most active research going on in software engineering. Early detection of defects lowers the cost of the software and also improves reliability. Machine learning techniques are widely used to create SDP models based on programming measures. The majority of defect prediction models in the literature have problems with class imbalance and high dimensionality. In this paper, we proposed Centroid and Nearest Neighbor based Class Imbalance Reduction (CNNCIR) technique that considers dataset distribution characteristics to generate symmetry between defective and non-defective records in imbalanced datasets. The proposed approach is compared with SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique). The high-dimensionality problem is addressed using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique by choosing relevant features. We used nine different classifiers to analyze six open-source software defect datasets from the PROMISE repository and seven performance measures are used to evaluate them. The results of the proposed CNNCIR method with ACO based feature selection reveals that it outperforms SMOTE in the majority of cases.

  • The effect of thermal annealing on defect recovery of in-core neutron-irradiated 4H-SiC was investigated. Au/SiC Schottky diodes were manufactured using a 4H-SiC epitaxial wafer that was neutron-irradiated at the HANARO research reactor. The electrical characteristics of their epitaxial layers were analyzed under various conditions, including different neutron fluences (1.3 × 1017 and 2.7 × 1017 neutrons/cm2) and annealing times (up to 2 h at 1700 ℃). Capacity-voltage measurements showed high carrier compensation in the neutron-irradiated samples and a recovery tendency that increased with annealing time. The carrier density could be recovered up to 77% of the bare sample. Deep-level-transient spectroscopy revealed intrinsic defects of 4H-SiC with energy levels 0.47 and 0.68 eV below the conduction-band edge, which were significantly increased by in-core neutron irradiation. A previously unknown defect with a high electron-capture cross-section was discovered at 0.36 eV below the conduction-band edge. All defect concentrations decreased with 1700 ℃ annealing; the decrease was faster when the defect level was shallow.

  • Many studies on software defect prediction have been conducted, but it has been difficult to use them due to a lack of training data. Cross-project defect prediction is a technique to solve this problem, where a prediction model learned with sufficient training data from existing source project is used to predict defects in the target project. Before learning, domain adaptation techniques, a type of transfer learning, are used to minimize the difference in data distribution between the two projects. In this paper, we produced new prediction models using W-BDA and MEDA and compared their performance with existing models using TCA and BDA. As a result of the evaluation experiment, MEDA showed irregular and poor performance compared to other models, but BDA showed better performance than TCA, and W-BDA showed slightly better performance than BDA.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic display defect detection system using image processing. The existing inspection by operators has the disadvantage that human errors may occur due to the operator's skill level, fatigue, etc., and that standardization and quantification are difficult. It also has disadvantages such as the limited inspection speed and the cost of the operator's education. The proposed system automatically detects various display defects through image processing algorithms. It was developed based on the Jetson Nano, one of the most popular SBCs (Single Board Computers), and it has a conveyor belt to automatically moves the display to the inspection position. By providing a human machine interface (HMI), the operator can check the inspection information in real time, and control the inspection flow. By storing the inspection results as a log file, the operator can check the inspection results at any time, such as the time taken to perform each algorithm and the location of the detected defects. In addition, a multi-threaded structure was adopted. The camera's operations and inspection algorithms are executed in parallel in different threads, which can shorten the inspection time compared to the system based on a single-threaded structure. The experimental results prove the defect detection capability of the system and the efficiency of the inspection time.

  • This paper describes the calculation technique for guided wave propagation with a semi-analytical finite element method (SAFEM) and shows some results of numerical calculation and guided wave simulation for plates, pipes and railway rails. The SAFEM calculation gives dispersion curves and wave structures for bar-like structures. Dispersion curve software for a pipe is introduced, and also dispersion corves for a rail are given and experimentally verified. The mode conversions in a plate with a defect and in a pipe with an elbow or a defect are shown as examples of our guided wave simulations.

  • Although it is widely accepted that a fire can occur due to electrical causes even when an engine stops, there is little introduction of detailed case analysis. This study analyzed a fire case caused by an electrical cause during engine stopping at parking lot in detail. Moreover, it was revealed that the fire was mainly caused by design defect.
