  • Three dimensional (3D) video is expected to be an important application for broadcast and IP streaming services. One of the main limitations for the transmission of 3D video over IP networks is network bandwidth mismatch due to the large size of 3D data, which causes fatal decoding errors and mosaic-like damage. This paper presents a novel selective frame discard method to address the problem. The main idea of the proposed method is the symmetrical discard of the two dimensional (2D) video frame and the depth map frame. Also, the frames to be discarded are selected after additional consideration of the playback deadline, the network bandwidth, and the inter-frame dependency relationship within a group of pictures (GOP). It enables the efficient utilization of the network bandwidth and high quality 3D IPTV service. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method enhances the media quality of 3D video streaming even in the case of bad network conditions.

  • In the recent digital communication systems, the performance of Turbo Code using the mr correction coding depends on the interleaver influencing the free distance determination and the recursive decoding algorithms that is executed in the huh decoder. However, performance depends on the interleaver depth that needs many delays over the reception process. Moreover, turbo code has been blown as the robust coding methods with the confidence over the fading channel. International Telecommunication Union(ITU) has recently adopted it as the standardization of the channel coding over the third generation mobile communications(IMT2000). Therefore, in this paper, we preposed the interleaver that has the better performance than existing block interleaver, and modified turbo decoder that has the parallel concatenated structure using MAP algorithm. In the realtime voice and video service over third generation mobile communications, the performance of the proposed two methods was analyzed and compared with the existing methods by computer simulation in terms of reduced decoding delay using the variable decoding method over AWGN and fading channels for CDMA environments.

  • In 3D video transmission, a depth map being used for depth image based rendering (DIBR) is generally compressed by reducing resolution for coding efficiency. Errors in resolution reduction are recovered by an appropriate up-sampling method after decoding. However, most previous works only focus on up-sampling techniques to reduce errors. In this paper, we propose a novel down-sampling technique of depth map that applies different down-sampling rates on moving objects and background in order to enhance human perceptual quality. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides both higher visual quality and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Also, our method is compatible with other up-sampling techniques.

  • A depth map can be obtained by projecting/capturing patterns of stripes using a projector-camera system and analyzing the geometric relationship between the projected patterns and the captured patterns. This is usually called structured light technique. In this paper, we propose a new multi-threading scheme for accelerating a conventional structured light technique. On CPUs and GPUs, multi-threading can be implemented by using OpenMP and CUDA, respectively. However, the problem is that their performance changes according to the computational conditions of partial processes of a structured light technique. In other words, OpenMP (using multiple CPUs) outperformed CUDA (using multiple GPUs) in partial processes such as pattern decoding and depth estimation. In contrast, CUDA outperformed OpenMP in partial processes such as rectification and pattern segmentation. Therefore, we carefully analyze the computational conditions where each outperforms the other and do use the better one in the related conditions. As a result, the proposed method can estimate a depth map in a speed of over 25 fps on $1280{\times}800$ images.

  • This Paper introduces representation and coding schemes of multiview texture and depth data for complex three-dimensional scenes. We represent input color and depth images using compressed texture and depth map pairs. The proposed X-codec encodes them further to increase compression ratio in a near-lossless way. Our system resolves two problems. First, rendering time and output visual quality depend on input image resolutions rather than scene complexity since a depth image-based rendering techniques is used. Second, the random access problem of conventional image-based rendering could be effectively solved using our image block-based compression schemes. From experimental results, the proposed approach is useful to graphics applications because it provides multiview rendering, selective decoding, and scene manipulation functionalities.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate communication efficacy of advertisement text through audience responses. This study approached qualitatively to KT&G TV commercials. The research proceeded as follows: First, as background theory, studies on audience focusing advertisement criticism and the interpretation of advertising texts were reviewed. Secondly, the characteristics of the audiences of the advertisements, analyzed through in-depth individual interviews as well as group interviews, were incorporated into a broad theme and then divided into different dimensions. Finally, the audiences' decoding code and critic reponses in reading ambiguous advertising texts, and the interrelationship between strategic ambiguity were discussed under a unified model. The major findings of this study are as follows: In interpreting the ambiguous advertising texts, the audiences use various decoding codes such as language, visuals, technology and rhetoric, and various critic responses such as linguistic, macroscopic, schematic, non-verbal and socio-cultural factors, in quite comprehensive manner. Also, it was shown that audiences make use of different decoding strategies in terms of their recognition, reliability, emotional attitude, and behavior. It can therefore be concluded that the strategic ambiguity has its limit in explaining its effectiveness in the entire dimensions of recognition, emotional attitude, and behavior, in the sense that the strategic ambiguity is most effective in recognition while it invokes more negativity in the behavioral dimension. Finally, this empirical study, focusing on qualitative analyses, may have its limit as well; however, deeper statistic-qualitative studies in the future could compensate for it.

  • In this paper, we proposed the architecture of the decoder which implements the multi-view images decoding algorithm. The study of the hardware structure of the multi-view image processing has not been accomplished. The proposed multi-view images decoder operates in a three stage pipelined manner and extracts the depth of the pixels of the decoded image every clock. The multi-view images decoder consists of three modules, Node selector which transfers the value of the nodes repeatedly and Depth Extractor which extracts the depth of each pixel from the four values of the nodes and Affine transformer which generates the projecting position on the image plane from the values of the pixels and the specified viewpoint. The proposed architecture is designed and simulated by the Max+plus II design tool and the operating frequency is 30MHz. The image can be constructed in a real time by the decoder with the proposed architecture.

  • Viterbi decoder is a maximum likelihood decoding method for convolution coding used in satellite and mobile communications. In this paper, a Viterbi decoder with constraint length of K=7, 3 bit soft decision and traceback depth of ${\Gamma}=96$ for convolution code is implemented using VHDL. The hardware size of designed decoder is reduced by 4 bit pre-traceback in the survivor memory.

  • According to the IMT-2000 specification of 3GPP(3rd Generation Partnership Project) and 3GPP2, Turbo codes is selected as a FEC(forward error correction) code for even higher reliable data communication. In 3GPP complied IMT-2000 system, channel coding under consideration is the selective use of convolutional coding and Turbo codes of 1/3 code rate with 4 constraint length. Suggesting a new path metric normalization method, we achieved a low complexity and high performance SOVA decoder for Turbo Codes, Further more, we analyze the decoding performance with respect to update depth and find out the optimal value of it by using computer simulation. Based on the simulation result, we designed a SOVA decoder using VHDL and implemented it into the Altera EPF10K100GC503FPGA.
