  • As deep decks are commonly used in construction fields and high-rise building. etc, the slim floor system is increasingly employed. But, the drawback of the slim floor system is that the use of 250 mm deep decks in a structure having a clear span of more than 6 m because of deflection and flexural buckling. This study suggests a non-support construction method where tendons are installed in the deep decks of the slim floor structure to introduce preload in order to control deflection in a structure having a clear span of 9 m. Loading tests were conducted to verify the composite effect and flexural capacity of the preloaded deep deck composite slab and evaluate the serviceability of the supportless construction method. The results showed the complete composite behavior of the preloaded deep deck composite slab with tendons. The specimens satisfied deflection limit and the working load was approximately 25% of the maximum load capacity. It is deemed that the cross-sectional area and yield strength of the deck plate should be taken into account in slab design and the yield strength and diameter of the tendon should be determined with the pre-tension taken into consideration.

  • The flutter stability of long-span suspension bridges during erection can be more problematic and more susceptible to be influenced by many factors than in the final state. As described in this paper, numerical flutter stability analyses were performed for the construction process of Zhongdu Bridge over Yangtze River using the commercial FE package ANSYS. The effect of the initial wind attack angle, the sequence of deck erection, the stiffness reduction of stiffening girders, the structural damping, and the cross cables are discussed in detail. It was found that the non-symmetrical sequence of deck erection was confirmed to be aerodynamically favourable for the deck erection of long-span suspension bridges and the best erection sequence should be investigated in the design phase. While the initial wind attack angle of $-3^{\circ}$ is advantageous for the aerodynamic stability, $+3^{\circ}$ is disadvantageous compared with the initial wind attack angle of $0^{\circ}$ during the deck erection. The stiffness reduction of the stiffening girders has a slight effect on the flutter wind speed of the suspension bridge during erection, but structural damping has a great impact on it, especially for the early erection stages.

  • Long-span suspension bridges located in typhoon-prone regions face significant risks of flutter instability, particularly in girder erection. Despite the implementation of aerodynamic countermeasures designed for the service stage, the flutter stability of bridge in girder erection may not meet the required standards. Nowadays, the double-deck truss girder is increasingly common in practical engineering which exhibits different performance from the single-deck truss girder. To gain insights into the flutter performance of this girder type and determine temporary aerodynamic countermeasures for flutter suppression in girder erection, wind tunnel tests were conducted. The effects of affiliated members on the flutter performance were first examined. Subsequently, different aerodynamic countermeasures were designed and their effectiveness was tested. The results indicate that the stabilizers above and below the upper and lower decks are the most effective for the flutter stability of bridge at positive and negative angles of attack, respectively. The higher the stabilizers are, the better the effect on flutter suppression achieves. Considering the feasibility in practical engineering, a temporary stabilizer above the upper deck was considered. It is expected that the results could provide references for the aerodynamic design of double-deck truss girder during erection.

  • This paper describes a weight-reduction design method for the car bodies of a double deck high-speed train (service speed of 300 km/h). The method uses lightweight materials and a topology optimization technique. In this study, aluminum extrusions and sandwich composites were selected as the best materials to reduce the weight of the car body. The topology optimization technique was used to determine which car body parts could be made of the sandwich composites to achieve additional weight savings. The results of the topology optimization analysis showed that sandwich composites could be used for secondary car body members such as the roof and the second underframe. Also, it was found that a car body composed of aluminum extruded parts and sandwich composites could weigh up to 14% less than a car body made of only aluminum extrusions.

  • Maritime deck machinery relies heavily on the importation of components produced by overseas companies. Our research defines design parameters for hydraulic winch regulators used in maritime deck machinery. Using Amesim, we were able to conduct 1D modeling, and utilizing CFS then enabled us to create 3D models. These models were analyzed in our research for changes in pressure on each port that resulted from the regulator's spring constant and changes in the primary tension-compression field. Our research then analyzed alterations in traits caused by changes in the length of overlap between the spool and sleeve. Last but not least, our research analyzed the trait alteration resulting from changing the interval between the spool and sleeve. We believe the results of our research can be used to design a hydraulic winch regulator used in maritime deck machinery that does not require importation.

  • Current design specifications prescribe that the upper and lower reinforcement mat is required in the same amount to resist negative and positive moment in bridge decks. This design concept is primarily based on the unrealistic assumption that the girder plays a role of rigid support against deck deflection. In reality, however, girders are flexible and the deflection of girders affect the behavior of deck slabs. In the present study, an analytical method was developed to take the effect of the girder flexibility on the deck behavior into account. The method was formulated based on the slope-deflection equations of plates and harmonic analysis. Unlike the conventional finite element analysis, the input and output schemes are simple and convenient. The validity of the presented study was verified by a series of comparative studies with finite element analyses and experimental tests. It was shown from the analyses that the negative transverse moments of decks were significantly reduced in many cases when the girder flexibility were appropriately taken into consideration whereas the positive moments tend to increase. This poses a strong need to improve the conventional design concept of decks on rigid girders to those on flexible girders.

  • This paper presents a simplified analysis method using the elastic equivalent modelling not using the global finite element modelling of deck for the basic design GFRP composites deck with cellular tubes or sandwich structural type. In order to verify the validation of the simplified method ANSYS software package is used and compared the results analyzed on the global finite element modelling and the elastic equivalent modelling. And the laboratory testing by 4-point bending is conducted to compare the results based on the simplified analysis method proposed in this paper. The comparison of the results based on the analysis and the testing are discussed. It is found that the presented simplified analysis is applicable to the use in the basic design GFRP composite deck.

  • A three-dimensional finite element model for the Jiashao Bridge, the longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge in the world, is established using the commercial software package ANSYS. Dynamic characteristics of the bridge are analyzed and the effects of structural system measures including the rigid hinge, auxiliary piers and longitudinal constraints between the girders and side towers on the dynamic properties including modal frequency, mode shape and effective mass are studied by referring to the Jiashao Bridge. The analysis results reveal that: (i) the installation of the rigid hinge significantly reduces the modal frequency of the first symmetric lateral bending mode of bridge deck. Moreover, the rigid hinge significantly changes the mode shape and effective mass of the first symmetric torsional mode of bridge deck; (ii) the layout of the auxiliary piers in the side-spans has a limited effect on changing the modal frequencies, mode shapes and effective masses of global vibration modes; (iii) the employment of the longitudinal constraints significantly increases the modal frequencies of the vertical bending modes and lateral bending modes of bridge deck and have significant effects on changing the mode shapes of vertical bending modes and lateral bending modes of bridge deck. Moreover, the effective mass of the first anti-symmetric vertical bending of bridge deck in the longitudinal direction of the fully floating system is significantly larger than that of the partially constrained system and fully constrained system. The results obtained indicate that the structural system measures of the multi-span cable-stayed bridge have a great effect on the dynamic properties, which deserves special attention for seismic design and wind-resistant design of the multi-span cable-stayed bridge.

  • To contribute to the preventive measures against local vibrations of ship's deck panels, some investigations into the prediction method of the natural frequency of the vibration of stiffened plates were done. Firstly, an analytical method based on the orthotropic plate analogy and the Rayleigh method using eigenfunctions of the Euler beam was shown, and numerical results of a regularly stiffened plate were compared with experimental results. And then, the method was extended to stiffened plates having one or two irregular stiffeners to obtain an approximate formula showing the relation between the change of the natural frequency and the size of the irregular stiffeners. The latter case was investigated for the purpose of providing a convenient design manual applicable to cure of local resonant vibrations of ships' deck panels by additional reinforcement of one or two stiffeners. In the analytical development the boundary was assumed to be rigidly supported and elastically restrained against rotation. In the experiment, however, only an extreme case i.e. simply supported boundary was investigated. The results of the investigation show that there is a fairly good conformity between the analytical results and the experimental ones in the first case, and that the approximate formula for the second case is confirmed also to be reliable for the design purpose. Considering that actual boundary conditions of deck panels in ship structures lie mostly somewhere between the simple support and the fixed, the authors discussed problems of the joint efficiency at the boundary of deck panels from the viewpoint of the practical application of the formulae.
