Recently, the frequency of debris flow disaster has increased, which is one of the natural disasters during extremely heavy rainfall condition. This paper described the analysis method about deposition characteristics of debris flow using topographic characteristics of debris flow path. First, we observed topographic changes by differencing high- resolution LiDAR DEMs acquired before and after the occurrence of debris flow event. We assumed that deposition on outside of debris flow path was generated by movements due to the inertia of debris flows. Then, we analyzed three topographic characteristics of debris flow path: slope in flow direction, transition angle of flow path, and the net efficiency(L/H) of debris flows defined by the ratio of transport length(L) and elevation difference(H). We applied this method to Umyeon Mountain debris flow event in July 2011. The results showed that deposition on outside of debris flow path due to the inertia of debris flows was significantly related to the transition angle of debris flow path. Also, we figured out that there were more frequent such depositions in locations where the ratio of 'transition angle / (L/H)' is over 8.

Debris flow is a representative natural disaster in Korea and occurs frequently every year. Recently, it has caused considerable damage to property and considerable loss of life in both mountainous and urban regions. Therefore, It is necessary to estimate the scope of damage for a large area in order to predict the debris flow. A response model such as the random walk model(RWM) can be used as a useful tool instead of a physics-based numerical model. RWM is a probability model that simplifies both debris flows and sedimentation characteristics as a factor of slopes for a subjective site and represents a relatively simple calculation method compared to other debris flow behavior calculation models. Although RWM can be used to analyzing and predicting the scope of damage caused by a debris flow, input variables for terrain conditions are yet to be determined. In this study, optimal input variables were estimated using DEM generated from the Aerial Photograph and LiDAR data of Mt. Umyeon, Seoul, where a large-scale debris flow occurred in 2011. Further, the deposition volume resulting from the debris flow was predicted using the input variables for a specific area in which the deposition volume could not be calculated because of work restoration and the passage of time even though a debris flow occurred there. The accuracy of the model was verified by comparing the result of predicting the deposition volume in the debris flow with the result obtained from a debris flow behavior analysis model, Debris 2D.
With the increase in frequency of typhoons and heavy rains following the climate change, the scale of damage from the calamities in the mountainous areas has been growing larger and larger, which is different from the past. For the case of Korea where 64% of land is consisted of the mountainous areas, establishment of the check dams has been drastically increased after 2000 in order to reduce the damages from the debris flow. However, due to the lack of data on scale, location and kind of check dams established for reducing the damages in debris flow, the measures to prevent damages based on experience and subjective basis have to be relied on. Under this study, the high-precision DEM data was structured by using the terrestrial LiDAR in the Jecheon area where the debris flow damage occurred in July 2009. And, from the numerical models of the debris flow, Kanako-2D that is available to reflect the erosion and deposition action was applied to install the erosion control facilities (water channel, check dam) and analyzed the effect of reducing the debris flow shown in the downstream. After installing the erosion control facilities, most of debris flow moves along the water channel to reduce the area to expand the debris flow, and after installing the check dam, the flow depth and flux of the debris flow were reduced along with the erosion. However, as a result of analyzing the diffusion area, flow depth, erosion and deposition volume of the debris flow generated from the deposition part after modifying the location of the check dams with the damages occurring on private residences and agricultural land located on the upstream area, the highest reduction effect was shown when the check dam is installed in the maximal discharge points.

In this study, we performed a GIS-based debris flow simulation using the high-resolution airborne LiDAR DEM in order to establish the effective and resonable debris prevention plans in Korea. To do so, we set a study area to an specific region over Pyeochang-gun in Kangwon-do which showed the extreme rugged distribution of topography and simulated a possibility of debris flow occurrence in this area using a GIS-based numerical simulation program which was developed by applying the finite difference method. After that, we also performed the debris flow simulation by SINMAP and geomorphic analysis method in the same region and compared each result with that of GIS-based debris simulation for verifying the reliability.
The shallow landslide-trigerred debris flow in hillslope catchments is the primary geological phenomenon that drives landscape changes and therefore imposes risks as a natural hazard. In particular, debris flows occurring in urban areas can result to substantial damages to properties and human injuries during the flow and sediment transport process. To alleviate the damages as a result of these debris flow, analytical models for flow and damage prediction are of significant importance. However, the analysis of debris flow model parameters is not yet sufficient, and the analysis of the entrainment, which has a significant influence on the flow process and the damage extent, is still incomplete. In this study, the effects of erosion and erosion process on the flow and the impact area due to the change in the soil parameters are analyzed using Deb2D model, a flow analysis model of debris developed in Korea. The research is conducted for the case of the Mt. Umyeon landslide in 2011. The resulting impacted area, total debris-flow volume, maximum velocity and inundated depth from the Erosion model are compared to the field survey data. Also, the effect of the entrainment changing parameters is analyzed through the erosion shape and depth. The debris flow simulation for the Raemian and Shindong apartment catchment with the consideration of entrainment effect and erosion has been successful. Each parameter sensitivity could be analyzed through sensitivity analysis for the two basins based on the change in parameters, which indicates the necessity of parameter estimation.
This paper presents the application of the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique to simulate the debris flow. The main objective of this study is to investigate the applicability of CEL technique to the behavior of debris flow, such as flow velocity and influence area. Comprehensive studies to verify the behavior of debris flow are presented in this study. Through comparison with measured flow velocity from Umyeonsan (Mt.), CEL approach was found to be in good agreement with the general trend observed by in actual debris flow. In addition, CEL technique accurately simulated the behavior of debris flows, therefore, it can be used for designing the countermeasure structure.

In this study debris like branch or trash are washed and flowed from land to stream by rainfall runoff at mountain or urban stream specially rainy season. These kinds of debris are accumulated at hydraulic construct on the way of flow along the stream. The shape or ratio of like these accumulated debris are various according to the location where it is accumulated and the material what it is, so that it is influenced to be varied to flow characteristics. To be simple of accumulated debris shape, it was made experiments though the variation of open ratio and the shape of accumulated debris by lab experiment using straight channel with two piers. From the result, the water level is inverse proportion to open ratio, and the water level more sensitive to the debris‘ width than length at the same area of accumulated debris.

In recent years in Korea, Typhoon Rusa (2002), Typhoon Maemi (2003), and the localized extreme rainfall followed by Typhoon Ewiniar in 2006 devastated residential areas, roads, and agricultural lands in Gangwon province where 90% of the area is in mountainous regions. Most of the economic losses and casualties were concentrated in the area near the mountain valleys and creeks due to the floods and debris flows. In this study, DATABASE, which includes a total 180 debris flow events in the Gangwon area, was created by collecting the hazard records and field investigations of existing debris flow sites. Analysis results showed that the most of the debris flows in Gangwon province initiated from the small slope failure with relatively steep slope of $18.1^{\circ}$. And they flowed short distances about 420 m in gentle slope with the average angle of $18.1^{\circ}$. In addition, rainfall condition was important for the triggering of debris flow not only at the day of debris flow but also extended period of rainfall before debris flow.
In this study, the behavior characteristics and triggering rainfall of debris flow were investigated on the basis of DB constructed by performing field investigation and collecting the rainfall data at the sites where debris flow occurred around the west of Gangwon and adjacent areas during the last 10 years. For hill slope and channelized type of debris flow, its behavior characteristic was analyzed through runout channel of debris flow divided into zone of initiation, transportation and deposition and its magnitude was estimated by considering erosion at zones of initiation and transportation. Some considerations related to establishment of landslide forecasting criterion were raised by comparing the analyzed results of analysis of rainfall at the time of debris-flow occurrence with the previous researches about the triggering rainfall of debris flow. In addition, an ID curve of inducing debris flow adequate to the investigated site was proposed and compared with results of previous study.
In order to assess applicability of debris flow simulation on natural terrain in Korea, this study introduced the DEBRIS-2D program which had been developed by Liu and Huang (2006). For simulation of large debris flows composed of fine and coarse materials, DEBRIS-2D was developed using the constitutive relation proposed by Julien and Lan (1991). Based on the theory of DEBRIS-2D, this study selected a valley where a large debris flow was occurred on July 16th, 2006 at Deoksanri, Inje county, Korea. The simulation results show that all mass were already flowed into the stream at 10 minutes after starting. In 10minutes, the debris flow reached the first geological turn and an open area, resulting in slow velocity and changing its flow direction. After that, debris flow started accelerating again and it reached the village after 40 minutes. The maximum velocity is rather low between 1 m/sec and 2 m/sec. This is the reason why debris flow took 50 minutes to reach the village. The depth change of debris flow shows enormous effect of the valley shape. The simulated result is very similar to what happened in the field. It means that DEBRIS-2D program can be applied to the geologic and topographic conditions in Korea without large modification of analysis algorithm. However, it is necessary to determine optimal reference values of Korean geologic and topographic properties for more reliable simulation of debris flows.
