Breeding for Spray Carnation 'Lepus' of White Color with Red Edge (적색 피크변의 백색계 스프레이 카네이션 '레퍼스' 육성)

  • A new spray carnation 'Lepus' was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in 2004. This hybrid was crossed between 'Diamond' and '99257-7 Line' in 2000. The 269 seedling plants were, planted and cultivated in green house. After investigation of the characteristics for four years (from 2001 to 2004), it was finally selected in 2004. 'Lepus' white color with red peak edge is spray type and strong flower stalks. Also, it has medium fragrance, many flowers, and attractive flower arrangement. In particular, flowering was 10 days early and flower stalk was 13cm longer than 'Diamond' (control). In addition, it has medium resistance of Fusarium and the vase life was similar to 'Diamond'.

A Growth Responses of Indoor Ground Cover Plants according to a Light Source of Aritificial Light (인공광의 광원에 따른 실내 지피식물의 생육반응)

  • This study was carried out to obtain fundamental information of growth response of ground cover plants under artificial light quality at indoor. Aglaonema 'Silver Queen', Hedera helix L., Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' and Saintpaulia ionantha 'Frances' were examined under a 400lux light intensity consisted of Mercury lamp, True-lite lamp, incandescent lamp, dark-room and sunlight indoor condition. A data analysis were performed by GLM, Duncan's multiple range test and mean score with SAS program. Results of experiments are as follows; 1. A plant growth status was better showed under the True-lite lamp than sunlight. 2. A Saintpaulia ionantha flower color was responded in the first place, the deep pinkish red color of Saintpaulia ionantha flower was obtained under Mercury lamp and "True-lite lamp", "sunlight", and incandescent lamp were follow. Flower numbers of Saintpaulia ionantha after 60 days tended to decrease under every artificial light quality. 3. Leaf length and leaf width were increased under True-lite lamp, but most of plants was not significantly affected by artificial light quality. 4. A stem length of Hedera helix was increased the highest rank under sunlight also, one of artificial light, the highest increase rank was showed under incandescent lamp. 5. Chlorophyll content was highly increased under Mercury lamp, but was responded poor under incandescent lamp.

Breeding of a New Pink Gerbera hybrida 'Party Time' with Strong Peduncle for Cut Flower (단단한 화경의 핑크색 절화용 거베라 신품종 '파티타임' 육성)

  • A new pink gerbera (Gerbera hybrida Hort.) cultivar 'Party Time' was developed from a cross between 'Hope' and 'Sunnyeo', followed by seedling and line selections at the Flower Research Institute of Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (GARES) in 2007. Detailed characteristics of the new cultivar were evaluated from 2005 to 2007. 'Party Time' has semi-double type large flowers in a good harmony with pink (RHS, 65-C) ray floret and brown center. It has a good, stable flower shape and strong peduncles, and its vase life was 12.7 days. The average flower yield of 'Party Time' was about 47.3 stems per plant a year in greenhouse yield trails carried out 2005 to 2007. 'Party Time' (Grant No. 2691) was registered to the Korea Seed and Variety Service (KSVS) for commercialization in 2009.

  • 'Secret Pink' was released by National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in 2008. The cross was made between '03B1-23' and 'Sei-Monaco in 2005'. After the evaluation of the characteristics under shade culture in summer and retarding culture in spring and consecutive selection from 2006 to 2008, 'Secret Pink' was selected finality. The natural flowering time of 'Secret Pink' was the middle of October, and it is possible to flower all year round by shade and light culture. It has single type flowers with pink petals. The growth of plant was very vigorous and response time was 6.5 weeks. The diameter of flower was 6.7 cm. Number of flowers per stem and petals per flower were 14.5 and 25, respectively. Days to flowering under the short day treatment was about 50 and its vase life was 25.5 days in autumn season.

Brewing and Quality Characteristics of Korean Honey Wine (Mead) with a Variety of Honey and Yeast (다양한 벌꿀과 효모를 이용한 벌꿀와인의 제조 및 품질 특성)

  • In this study, the brewing and quality characteristics of a variety of honey and yeast strains in Korea were investigated. After fermenting acacia honey, chestnut honey, citrus honey, and mixed flower honey using commercial yeast, the quality changes during fermentation were investigated. Chestnut honey wine (mead) and mixed flower mead showed the highest ethanol contents of 11.9 and 11.3%, respectively after fermenting for 8 days at $25^{\circ}C$. Acacia mead and citron (Chinese lemon) mead showed 5.0 and 8.2% ethanol contents, respectively. Mixed mead, which fermented with acacia honey and mixed flower honey, in order to advance sensory properties, showed the best sensory properties, generating 10.9% ethanol, while another product with citron honey and mixed flower honey generated 11.1% of ethanol but with a lower sensory value. When adding corium peels to the mixed mead of acacia honey and mixed flower honey, the ethanol content was not increased by addition of corium peels into mixed mead, but its total acceptability was increased by addition of 2% corium peels. To check the mead clarification, it was treated with 0.6% of bentonite and filtered; then, its turbidity was observed over a storage period. The safe result for precipitation was shown at the condition of storing at $10^{\circ}C$ for 15 days with 0.24 NTU (Nepthelometric Turbidity Unit).

A New Pink Mini Cut Flower Gerbera Cultivar, "Summer Ring" (핑크색 소륜 절화용 다수성 거베라 신품종 "썸머링")

  • A new pink gerbera (Gerbera hybrida Hort.) cultivar 'Summer Ring' was developed from a cross between 'Grandeur' and 'Nova Zembla' followed by seedling and line selections at the Flower Breeding Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) in 2005. Characteristics of the new cultivar were evaluated three times from 2003 to 2004. 'Summer Ring' has semi-double type mini flower in good harmony with pink (RHS, 56-D) ray floret and green center. It has good stable flower shape and strong peduncle, and its vase life was 14.7 days. The average yield of 'Summer Ring' flower was 69 per plant/year in greenhouse yield trails during 2003 and 2004. This cultivar was registered for commercialization in 2005. Commercial production of 'Summer Ring' could be possible throughout the country under greenhouse condition.

A New Standard Gerbera Cultivar 'Harmony' with Pink and Semi-double Adaptable to High Temperature (대륜계통의 고온적응성 분홍색 반겹꽃 거베라 신품종 'Harmony')

  • A new gerbera cultivar 'Harmony' was bred by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in 2010. 'Pavilov' with pink and 'Marathon' with purple, which have semi-double flower, were crossed in 2007. After investigation of the characteristics for four years (from 2007 to 2010), it was selected specially for the use as a cut flower. The 'Harmony' had brilliant pink color (RHS R49B) with dark brown center. The flower was semi-doubled with 11.8 cm in diameter. It had a long and thick peduncle with length and upper width 59.2 cm and 3.9 mm, respectively. The vase life of 'Harmony' was 12.0 days, which was 3 days longer than the control cultivar. And its average yield was 57.0 stems per plant, which were 10.5 stems more than the control.

  • This study was carried the effect of transportation conditions and plant growth regulator on the maintenance of freshness and quality of cut Chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. The quality of cut chrysanthemum 'Baekma' which were stored at $5^{\circ}C$ was better than those of stored at $20^{\circ}C$ and control. When cut mum 'Baekma' was transported stacking boxes with vertical condition after dipping in distilled water, flowering degree, flower size, days to flower appearing degree, and bent neck were delayed. Flowering degree was delayed by $10mg/L^{-1}$ uniconazole spraying, The days to bent neck was delayed by 1,000x daminozide spraying.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the flowering habit for the botanical types of peanut (Arachis hypogaea. L) in cultural limiting region. Eight peanut varieties pertaining to virginia, Spanish, Valencia, Shinpung type were used in this study. Shinpung type, a new erect type was developed at Crop Experiment Station, ORD. Appearance of the first flower of peanut plants is observed at a relatively early growing stage. Number of days to first flower were 41 days under vinyl-mulching while non-mulching culture took 55 days. Number of days to first flower were delayed in order of Valencia, Spanish, Shinpung, Virginia type. Flowering durations were distinguished among botanical types and days of those were Virginia 85-93, Spanish 101-105, Valencia 106-113, Shinpung 82-88 days, respectively. The Spanish and Valencia types produced more flowers than Virginia and Shinpung types. The maximum flowering stage of Shinpung and Virginia types reached early and ceased by one cycle, while Spanish and Valencia types came late and showed maximum stage through the early and late stage during the growth stage. By vinyl-mulching, the maximum flowering stage was shortened by 20 days than that of non-mulching. Distribution of flowers for each of branch positions to total flowers occupied 52-53% in two cotyledonary branchs, 23-27% in 3rd to 5th branchs, 20-25% in over. 6th branchs. Shinpung type was considered more favorable botanical type than the other types for the breeding of early maturing high yielding variety because of shortening of days to first flower, flowering duration and distribution of lower branch of effective flowers.

Breeding of Orange Rose "Peach Pudding" with Good Color and Shape (화형, 화색이 우수한 오렌지색 절화용 스탠다드 장미 "피치푸딩" 육성)

  • A new standard rose cultivar "Peach Pudding" was bred from the cross between deep red standard cultivar 'Red Sandra' and light pink standard cultivar 'Dolores' at the National Horticulture Research Institute. The cross was made in 2000 and "Peach Pudding" was finally selected in 2006 after investigating characteristics for three years from 2002 to 2006. 'Peach Pudding', a pink standard cultivar has good flower shape and fashionable flower color. The major characteristics of this cultivar are 113.1 stems/$m^2$/year in yield, 60.6 cm in length of cut flower, 8.7 cm in flower diameter, 38.6 in petal number, and 12.8 days in vase life. This cultivar can be propagated by both cutting and grafting. The consumer's preference of this cultivar is relatively higher than that of control cultivar, 'New Miracle'.
